Startup time can be fixed by running Emacs as a daemon on boot. (Not sure if that's possible with Windows) For keybindings you can just use evil and get vim keybindings. But yeah, Emacs is not easy to get started with, though I feel it's worth spending time getting used to it.

Why not Emacs? Just curious.

Yup. Most VPNs with decent bandwith cost $4/month. You can get pretty much the same service for $4/year if you buy a cheap NAT VPS server and spend 10 minutes setting up openvpn.

For people wanting to try i3/awesomeWM/anotherTilingWM: Learn all the keyboard shortcuts, not just the basic ones. Spend some time on perfecting the configuration for you. Make keybindings that make sense to you.

Tip: Once you realize that you can make everything tabbed/stacked, your workflow becomes really fluent.

I get (maybe) your argument when it comes to Windows 7 -> Windows 10, but I think you're overestimating how hard it is to get up and running with Arch Linux. Following an Arch install tutorial shouldn't take anyone here on Hackernews more than 2 hours to get their DE, networking etc. up and going.

You should try it. It's fun!
