Newer cars do see around corners (relative to the driver), using the rear cameras. When backing out in my newish car, I can see up and down the road in both directions, from the cameras on the rear bumper.

Bitcoin has a great use case as internet native money, which can be thrown around programmatically, without being reliant on any private, corporate, or nation controlled services. Considering how much of a shitshow the payments industry is, I think this is a huge opportunity for bitcoin. Sure there are cases where regular payment methods are preferable, perhaps even most, but that doesn't mean that there is no place for true peer-to-peer permissionless money transfers.

So some questions:

with the privileges of the Bluetooth daemon

Which priviliges is that? Can it access user data? Snoop on input/output?

For some devices, the Bluetooth MAC address can be deduced from the WiFi MAC address

So if wifi is off, I'm safe?

I have bluetooth on all the time, because it automatically pairs with my car for cellular and audio, and turning it on and off would be a hassle. I rarely, however, use wifi unless I have to download a very big amount of data, which is almost never.

Have you compared with other BT headphones?

Because in general, BT headphones are great and I understand that people love them. But Airpods are not among the better ones in my experience. They drop out more than my other BT headphones, and the fact that they have no volume control is just unbelievably stupid to me.

I honestly couldn't see much difference. I did not study it in detail to find the differences, just a casual view of both clips. I did look at the comparison clips at the end of the 4K version but still didn't see much of a difference.

A problem may be that the source material is simply too high quality to begin with? I watched the original first and thought "wow, 1896, this enhancement is great", only turns out that was the original clip. They should have chosen something that has more room for improvement (which would also give them a lot more interesting material to choose from).

Verbalizing your thought process is invaluable for validating that what you are doing/thinking actually makes sense. For developers, just think about all the times you have started explaining some code problem to a colleague, and instantly come upon the solution, simply by verbalizing ideas. The other person doesn't even have to say anything. There is even the concept of 'rubberduck debugging', where you explain things to a rubber duck, and it helps solve the problem.

I have often thought about what the experience would be of living entirely without verbalized thoughts. Like, obviously ideas and concepts exist separately from their verbal representations, so skipping words would be a more pure and effective form of thinking, right? But lately I have come to the belief that words are a necessary scaffold for organizing more complex ideas. Without them, I think we would simply be unable to put together complex enough models to understand things at the level we need to function in our complicated world. Like making diagrams helps with analysing domains.

It is proven that lack of verbal stimulation leads to slower develoment in children, possibly for the same reason. I think it is also the mechanism by which people who spend a lot of time alone (think castaways) eventually go insane - due to the lack of an external validation mechanism.

This understanding would seem to indicate that people who don't have an internal monologue would be less capable of expressing/understanding complex ideas. I would be very interested in knowing if that is the case.

I think it was more about making it difficult to be hit. Both because of the irregular movement, but also because rockets exploding on the ground causes damage, and being off the ground saves you (hence good players always aiming the RPG at the ground under the opponent).

This focuses on the use of lithium for treating psychiatric disorders, as a mood stabilizer. However, in addition to this, there is lots of evidence[1][2] that trace amounts of lithium in general populations lead to lower rates of violent crime (and has general neuroprotective effects). I think this connection makes sense logically, if large doses serve to stabilize the mood of bipolar patients, small doses would likely have at least some effect on 'regular' people.

It is possible to buy trace mineral drops which contain such small amounts of lithium as to be safe for everyday use (as a bonus they also contain other useful trace minerals, like magnesium). I personally have been using them for years.

Someone recently pointed out to me, that if your idea of bliss is to just lounge and do nothing, you might be depressed. Certainly if you hate what you're doing so much that the best thing you can think of is to do nothing, Office Space style, that is a pretty bleak outlook.

It's not a dead end path, it's not far from how Unity works (of course you may consider Unity a dead end path).

I think your stance is needlessly puritan. At some point, the program has to actually do something and put it on the screen. Whether that is printing lines of text or moving a colorful sprite in some way is really not that different, except one is a lot more appealing to a young learner.

Since J. Edgar Hoover, it is has been an open secret that blackmail drives the upper echelon of politics and media. The Bill Clinton thing is another example, pretty sure he put his foot down and said fuck it, hence Lewinsky turning up with a tainted dress from 8 months ago, and down goes the U.S. president. How many just acquiesce and play along quietly?

More people should have guts like Bezos (probably did). Though at some point, I'm sure the shadow people will just fall back on good old violence, like the Epstein case.

Going against the grain here, but, why so sensitive? A simple suggestion is not an insult, a sign of unthankfulness, or in itself denigrating the author's efforts.

I got the same vibe from the article TBH, a lot of what he considers rude just seems like well intentioned, if possibly misunderstood, suggestions.

Consider that even filing a bug report is an effort 95% of users would never make. So even doing that is in most cases a contribution, at least as seen from the point of view of the submitter. But the author actually considers it an affront if it doesn't conform to the bug report template.

With the disclaimer that I have never maintained a highly popular GitHub repo, I get a lot of feedback for my projects that is unuseable, and some that is aggravating. I always have the option of simply ignoring it, and that's the end of that interaction. Perhaps the author is not actually good at setting boundaries and ends up blaming others for imposing.

The "Arab Spring" was just another power projection project, you only need to examine how many so-called NGOs that ran the social media campaigns were directly or indirectly funded by intelligence agencies.

But more to the point of the GP, to think that only the military industrial complex profits from American global dominance is incredibly naive. All the U.S. interventionism in South America for the last century (i.e. armed insurrection against democracies to install fascist dictatorships) was about opening markets and resources for exploitation by American (civil) corporations.

I get nauseous watching handheld video footage for just a few minutes, if the screen is big enough. Obviously VR is going to be a problem (I've tried it, Project Cars in a dedicated VR cabinet setup at a mall, was sick as a dog within minutes).

Yes, this seems obvious to me.

Stuff like The Void[1], where a complete arena is built to supplement the visuals, with physical features that match the VR ones (like physical buttons on walls that match the VR projected ones, moving platforms), smells, wind, sounds, etc.

The future of this is going to be incredibly cool, I think. Just subtle stuff like blowing cold air on your face when you're standing on top of a VR mountain, will do wonders for the immersion.

I've been the sole Eclipse developer in a number of places where everyone used IntelliJ. At least a couple of the places had switched from Eclipse after having been worn down by that one incessant IntelliJ guy. A few developers discreetly confided that they would rather have stayed on Eclipse, and some new people followed my lead. None of the places were 'IntelliJ shops' though, any more than I know of any 'Eclipse shops'. It would be rather poor form to hard tie your projects to an IDE, so it was always fairly doable to run with your IDE of choice.

There are, despite the often very aggressive IntelliJ proponents, many areas where Eclipse beats IntelliJ, and incremental compilation is indeed one of the most important. It is also possibly the most important feature in a Java IDE. Ctrl+s and you know the whole codebase is compiled. Go to another file and any code change is available in the code completion (like new or changed methods signatures). Any errors from the change you just saved is shown immediately from across the entire codebase.

I just can't live without a core thing like this missing, and compounded with a number of other things that Eclipse does better, I stay on Eclipse. Unfortunately many younger developers think IntelliJ is all there is.

So many jaded comments! This is incredibly cool. The 'breakthrough' (if you can talk about that at such an early stage) is a few simple materials engineering hacks:

The nanotubes were easy. Cetindag says the lab just buys them from a chemical supply company. The scientists then add these to a polymer precursor that’s spread into a 6.5-micrometer-thick film. To orient the randomly aligned tubes, the researchers wanted to use a magnetic field. The problem: BNNTs aren’t magnetic.

So Cetindag painted the negatively charged tubes with a positively charged coating; the molecules that made it up were too large to fit inside the BNNTs and thus left their channels open. Cetindag then added negatively charged magnetic iron oxide particles to the mix, which affixed to the positively charged coatings.

When the researchers applied a magnetic field, they could maneuver the tubes so that most aligned across the polymer film. They then applied ultraviolet light to cure the polymer, locking everything in place. Finally, the team used a plasma beam to etch away some of the material on the top and bottom surfaces of the membrane, ensuring the tubes were open to either side. The final membrane contained some 10 million BNNTs per cubic centimeter.

When the researchers placed their membrane in a small vessel separating salt- and freshwater, it produced 8000 times more power per area than the previous French team’s BNNT experiment.

But that's what drop frame does - it goes back to the state before your current function call, including resetting variables. It does not revert global state (like static variables) but it is essentially like reverting execution 95% of the times I use it.
