How To Land Any Major Brand For Your Startup

Some of my favorite bits from this article are:

"The Chronicle interviewed numerous dealers who were deported but re-entered the country illegally and returned to the Tenderloin shortly thereafter. One has done it nine times."

“One said he moves furniture, another said he was an Amazon delivery driver in the morning and sold drugs in the evening.”

"The dealer said he likes some of San Francisco’s police officers. Sometimes, he said, one will tap him on the shoulder and say, “You’ve been out here for four hours. You’ve made enough money.”

Actually, our pirates are not solving a problem of how to get more people to click on ads, but rather how to create a better way for users to engage with video on sites, Facebook, mobile phones and how for developers to better integrate it with their properties without hindering user experience.

Yes, we are not introducing a Radio, TV or Computer. But surely the quality of content and success of each platform has been guaranteed by powerful monetization efforts. In the case of TV, Radio, NewsPaper - it was advertisement. We want to help developers better monetize their properties, so that they can provide richer, more valuable content to the end user. We too hate intrusive advertisement and we too have ad-block installed. For this reason, we realize that someone ought to find a better solution. That's where Virool comes in.

it's a good place to source A talent from, but as with any big organization they have people who are good & bad, smart & dumb. Interviewing and identifying A talent vs B talent is a different skill set, but a needed one in order to build a successful company.

This post was more focusing on how to source all types of talent from a big organization like Google.

Virool (http://www.virool.com) - San Francisco, CA.

We recently announced our $6.6 seed round, and are growing at light speed. We are making an impact on video advertising industry and want ROCKSTARS to join us in this journey.

Here's the type of people we are looking for:

Backend Engineer - you will help us handle 1000 requests/second that hit our 20+ servers, store 10GB of data every day and double every month

VP of Network Growth - you will be signing partnerships with leading websites and apps

VP of Sales - you will take our sales charts to the whole new level

UI/UX Designer - you will share our values with over 300 million people via simple yet elegant designs of our products.

Ad Sales Manager - you will deliver happiness and peace of mind to our clients.

You can see all open positions on: http://www.virool.com/about/work-at-virool

Basically, there's two things at stake in creating a viral video: 1. content 2. distribution

We can't help our advertisers create good, engaging content, but we can help with distribution. We can get their video infront of people through our network of publishers, but if their video (content) sucks, it's not going to catch on.

We are not looking to become a solution for promoting viral videos. We are building a Google AdWords for video solution with distribution taking place on Facebook, Mobile Apps, blogs and sites.

The Best 14 years ago

i think this is an incredible post. We rarely embrace the art and quality it takes to build things that we use everyday (toothbrushes, wallets, backpacks, forks, etc.), but in search for them, you encounter people that built them and an incredible story behind them.

Very inspiring to strive to surround yourself with best of everything.

I appreciate your honest input. And I agree to an extent that social hacking (networking) is not everything, far from it. However, in building a company, it's a very useful skill to have.

As far as appearing on front page, I am not sure how hn works, but I can guarantee you that I have no interest in manipulating upvotes, nor do I have time to do it.

And overall, I am just trying to create useful content for the community.

The article is meant to be useful for the community. There's no use of us manipulating anything as my intent was to share some tips that worked for me (and might work for someone else). It got republished on lifehacker.

I am open to constructive conversations and suggestions. If you have ideas about social hacking, then please share them.

How To Meet Anyone 14 years ago

i am the author of this post. seriously voting ring? guys, the title of the article was "How To Meet Steve Wozniak and President" - that alone drove a ton of clicks, when people found it useful, they upvoted it! I can tell you that in a matter of 2 hours, we got around 50 votes, I suspect no more than 6 of them came from people that I know.

@sixQuarks there was a mention in TechCrunch that happened as a result of YC experience. The rest of the press: PandoDaily, VentureBeat, ReelMarketer, etc., happened because of a mix of things: pure hustle (applying the rules I outlined), and positioning our company as a thought leader in the space.

Thank you for pointing out the links.

@VSerge, this wasn't meant to be a comprehensive list of advanced strategies. I just threw some quick thoughts, posted on company's blog and posted it on HackerNews with hopes of starting a discussion about ways people got PR. I guess it wasn't apparent in the post, but I would love to hear more tips from the community about things that worked/ didn't work for them.
