Yup, aware that this subreddit exists. This is a slightly different take and also one that aims to do more than just have a forum but that's the start.

This is a great technique to learning. I taught myself how to code after college and found doing my own version of this helpful. The only slight difference in the technique I used was I found it easier to learn when I had something I wanted to build in mind. This helped both in both direction, what to learn, as well as forcing me replicate code for my own use, like the Ben Franklin technique. Hope others find it useful too.

Thanks for the link, didn't know there were that many options outside of AWS's own tool, guess not great marketing...This is less of a time commitment and more of a scratching my own itch thing. I was finding myself doing the same thing over and over so I wrote the script for myself and thought maybe others would find it interesting. If not, no biggie.

We'll have to see what happens. I would guess if there are opportunities for companies to make money than more and more will enter the market increasing competition over workers which may keep wages up or even increase them.

There are definitely some downsides to the gig economy but the purpose of the article was to shine some light on the existing opportunities for workers to help leverage themselves if they are in it.

There are definitely advantages for the employers but I wanted to bring attention to the fact it can also be a win-win situation for both parties involved.

This is the first version of my vision for trying to build a better platform for buying and selling between strangers. It would be great to get feedback on whether or not you would use the product in it's current form. And if you would, what other features would you want? I am eventually trying to replace Craigslist outright but for now want to try and piggyback off of it to get initial users. Thanks for any feedback.

This has happened but managing a property is different job than being a broker, not quite apples to apples. We'll have to see if it becomes more and more popular to do that if it increases the prices over time.

And in the case of renters, they usually have to pay a broker's fee (if used) which is typically 1 month up front. So 8% right there plus if you factor in time value of money could be more.

I suppose, but I have personally found you can actually get higher rents through Airbnb. This might change as it becomes more popular, more clientele, etc. but we've made more on Airbnb as landlords (including fees) then we did just doing it all ourselves.

Don't forget all the marketing, time spent with potential renters, background checks, etc you have to do on your own.

Interesting, yea I've lived in both Boston and NYC and it was almost impossible to find a place without a broker.

What cities?

In most I have lived in, brokers dominate (NYC, Boston, Washington, DC). Even going onto something like Craigslist, most posts there are just brokers posting. Maybe it's less prevalent than I have experienced in other cities?

I agree, at the society level there needs to exist both those that specialize and those that create new things. I tried addressing this in the essay, though going beyond that I do think on the individual level having a broad knowledge base will help in many walks of life, not just your job/career. Therefore, learning multiple disciplines even at a basic level is better than not.

I also have to disagree with this statement and the article in general. It's very difficult to say what terrorists use when they are living in the US, let alone make a general statement that they don't use them because they'd be stupid to use these services. That actually makes the argument for why using these services might be advantageous for them even stronger. If you (the general population) doesn't think they'd use it, that makes it more of a reason for them to use it.

Let me big clear that this is not an argument for NSA-type surveillance, however, I don't think we should be arguing against the surveillance using general statements or more accurately opinions like these. Argue against surveillance with more factual/strong cases.
