Comcast acquired NBC recently, and with that came NBC's assets, one of which was EveryBlock (which NBC had only recently acquired and then shuttered).

Comcast brought it back -- not under NBC anymore, but under Comcast proper. The big question is why? What is their monetization strategy? As a Chicago resident and past EveryBlock user, I'm very curious about this. My first guess is that Comcast appreciates being able to correlate an email address with a neighborhood, for marketing opportunities.

Best to leave that attitude on reddit

You disagree with my interpretation of this thread, fine. You might be right, great! The "best leave that attitude on reddit" comment is childish and does more to lower the quality of the conversation than my call to ignore unexplained (not even irrational) points. Grow up.

How does insect protein compare to plant protein with respect to cheapness and efficiency? What's the argument for inventing an industry when an industry already exists which provides plenty of healthy, cheap, and efficient protein for humans?

The problem with putting everything in Evernote is that it becomes stale. I think that's what has prevented me from getting into it.

Some examples of items I would not put in Evernote, from the article:

- Some sections of my server's log, containing all the information I need to troubleshoot my most recent problem

You copied some sections of your server's log and put them in Evernote, so that you can troubleshoot a problem? How is this useful? Why not troubleshoot it by looking at the logs directly? Why do you want to store stale logs? Or, are you saying your server automatically refreshes the Evernote note? That would be more interesting and worthy of an article.

- A web clipping from an article on the best VPN providers, since I'm installing a VPN on my home server

Aren't you interested in whether the list of best VPN providers changed since the last time you searched? And why store something that's a google search away? How often will you need to review this stale list of VPN providers?

- A web clipping on how to install OpenVPN on my home server, since I don't remember how to do it by heart

Same thing. https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+install+openvpn How often do you install OpenVPN?

- A web clipping on setting file permissions, since I need to give my girlfriend access to my server's files

What about just learning how to set file permissions, if it's something you do very often? Or, "man chmod".

No offense intended, I know people think and work differently. I just still don't get it.

I'm curious why this is one of your most-used commands. If you want to know the sizes of all files matching 'foo', this is a horribly inefficient way of going about it.

Feminism is about how people are treated, not about who you like. No one cares who you like.

By the way, what is with this "the feminists" bullshit? It's not a society. People of all walks of life, who believe that women deserve the same respect and rights men do, call themselves feminists. It is a sure sign of a small mind to go around blaming shit on supposedly homogeneous and insidious groups like "the feminists," "the communists," or "the homosexuals."

Um, what? I think your definition of "feminism" is a bit flawed. Could you explain which part of feminism rejects the notion that you decide who you like?

That's not an excuse. You seem to have an ignorance about a whole group of people. I'm fairly sure even the Pope could come up with the word "transsexual".

I don't mean to imply that ignorance implies anything else about you, but it's ignorance. You can alleviate it by: 1. Meeting some people outside of your apparently somewhat homogeneous bubble 2. Reading books

Nice to start off the morning with a laugh. I'm not interested in the boring conversation about whether trannie is an acceptable term to our society, but the idea you had no idea what it is short for is a joke. As a graduate in Sociology, how can you understand "how technology shapes culture" and obviously never have bothered to know the name for large subsets of our culture?

Optional like the sites that have "sign in via facebook" and no other option?

Yes. Or are you under the impression that those sites are also not optional?

I wonder if this experience had any effect on how the author writes code. He basically backed into making the code testable. The process of identifying the clock as part of the problem would presumably have between much easier if he had adhestrongertronger SOLID principles.

I think what you're asking for is intellectual honesty. There's nothing hypocritical about judging people for crimes you were guilty of in the past. You can't take a word and just change it however you like. Actually, you can, if enough people agree with you. But in this case the dictionary doesn't.
