It is quiet sad to see Windows deteriorate that much over the years because of the decreased investment and lack of care and craftsmanship for the quality of the software being pushed out.

Thankfully unless you're running a few specific applications that only run on Windows, you can use any other operating system. It will do the job, with much less frustrations.

I was affected by the outage yesterday, and my flight to Seattle was delayed by over 6 hours, arriving in Seattle at 3am today. What made the delay much worse is the lack of clear communication and updates throughout the delay. As a consolation, the passengers got a 1-day redeemable $12 meal credit at the airport enough for a bag of chips and a small chocolate bar, which lightened the situation as it put into perspective how ridiculous the prices are at the airport.

I wonder if this is related to the errors I saw this week, when I tried to install Chrome on my kid's computer. Apart from all the popups that discouraged switching to Chrome, the installer failed to run with an obscure error message.

Luckily I recalled there is an offline installer, and when I downloaded that, it worked like a charm.

That is interesting, and reminds me of self preservation. I wonder what training sets elicit that behavior, perhaps most likely all the sci-fi novels.

The white paper back of the envelope calculations show a 4km x 4km solar panels and radiators are required for a 5 GW datacenter. I am not sure how the authors were not cracking up while writing that white paper.

Definitely an out of this world idea. I wonder if their micro datacenter is going to be self-sufficient power wise using only solar energy? And how would they address the hardware failures that are likely when you train large language models at scale?

Sadly software optimization doesn't offer enough cost savings for most companies to address consumer frustration. However, for large AI workloads, even small CPU improvements yield significant financial benefits, making optimization highly worthwhile.

I am always amazed how most business book authors take a simple idea that could be described in one page, and turn it into a 200+ page book with popularizing narrative. What's more amazing is that the ideas are usually commonsense, but due to human nature are seldom practiced.

So those alchemists of many years ago probably had a collider as well.

I wonder how successful this pricing model ($100-$200 a month with limits) is going to be. It is very hard to justify, when other tooling in the ~$20/month range offers unlimited usage, and comparable quality.

Thanks for the link, I did not know that cleaner/pristine Windows install are available out of the box. Out of curiosity, if these laptops are the same price as the one laden with "crapware", why are'nt consumers buying these instead? Is it awareness that they are available?

Would be interesting to see who's interested in buying them given most of the negative comments about them here. Perhaps Yahoo can scoop them up like it did with other startups in a similar situation.

Interesting article about how object gender in different languages affects how people perceive and describe them.

It is an interesting idea to see if forgoing formal learning through tutoring, reading material, and textbooks; and learning through team collaboration and a lot of practice would work.

Like others on the thread, my hunch is that there will be a small group of self-driven students who will teach themselves using the same formal education methods: replicating the courses given in other universities, reading textbooks/papers/research, researching online, and watching MOOC style videos.

This group will end up teaching the others in their class through project collaboration. But unless everyone in the class is self-driven, the result would be a couple of successful self-taught developers, and a whole lot of below average ones.

One of mine is adjusting the “look” of a word processing document.

I find that editing text in a WYSIWYG word processor distracts me from the content and makes me tinker with the formatting. Like other commenters suggested, I switched to using LaTeX and never looked back. Sadly though LaTeX is not for the faint of heart.

Agree, we get a lot of 'boot camp' graduates at work and sadly they don't fare well in the interview process. The ones that do are typically CSS/JavaScript web developers, but even then their knowledge is superficial.

In Arizona and other water starved states they use artificial grass in their lawns, and some of them look reasonable. I am starting to see the trend in the bay area as well.

Agree, however if the user sets the DNT explicitly, sites will have no excuse to ignore it anymore.

I have seen my battery life improve from 3 hours while using Chrome to 5 hours while browsing the same content using Safari on my MacBook pro. One downside I've experienced with Safari is that it does not reclaim the memory a tab uses after it is closed, which leads to a crash once a day.

Would be very interesting to see if they also integrate it in Visual Studio, and have a similar development environment to R Studio
