Why Amazon's Fire Phone Won't Succeed

abdophoto
1pts0

I think the size of the phone is just a small problem. In my opinion it's the software the needs work. Right now, iOS is just scaled up and that's just not ideal.

For example, take how the Home screen icons stick to the top. You can in theory have 5 rows of icons with a blank one on the bottom. This may have worked well on previous iPhone's but with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus it makes it even harder to reach.

These are things I hope Apple addresses in iOS 9. Right now it's just scaled up for big phones. It's now time to optimize it.

Amazon Fire TV 12 years ago

I keep thinking to myself "The second Apple puts out an SDK for the Apple TV, it's over"

If you're going to spend $99, you're probably going to wait for Apple or Google. If you want to spend less, you'll just get a Chromecast.

Less than 2 years ago, my wife was diagnosed with MS (Multiple sclerosis). As soon as we found out, I started digging like crazy to learn more about why this happened and what we could do to prevent it from progressing. I'm a big believer in that the body has the ability to heal itself by avoiding certain foods and intaking others. I mean, food is fuel we put in our body.

After digging for a while, I came upon some staggering discoveries. First, there are people who have reversed their MS almost completely on diet alone. The diets consist of A LOT of high-nutrition fruits and vegetables along with Omega 3's, organic meats, etc. These Paleo-like diets also forbid gluten with the main reason being that it causes serious inflammation in some folks. This TEDx video by Dr. Terry Wahl was very helpful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLjgBLwH3Wc). I read her book and it literally laid the foundation for which changed our eating habits entirely.

A month or so after, we flew out to Massachusetts to a well-known wellness center where they performed various blood and stool tests. The Dr's (including a Nutritionist) sat down with us for the entire day and asked about daily habits from what our work days were like to what we ate. Without mentioning my own research, they also said that gluten is something we should completely remove from our diet.

There's a ton of other stuff out there, but since removing gluten entirely, my wife has felt great. We just did an MRI and she has no new lesions. She no longer experiences blurriness or weakness which is great. It may not be completely because of Gluten, but removing seems to have seriously made a impact.

Critique my pitch 12 years ago

I think the idea is wonderful. From an aesthetic perspective, it would help if you weren't in such a dark room :) Your pitch, which is on YouTube should have a link under it somewhere so I don't have to wonder if you said "Collegeinsideview" or "Collegeinsightview"

Keep it up, man. Seems like people are viewing and commenting on your site already.

Medium is Winning 13 years ago

[This is also a bit promotional]

Although I do think Medium is doing a great job of letting you discover some good reading material, I often find it a bit confusing too.

Not too long I co-created http://thetechblock.com out of similar frustration of not being able to find good tech-related articles. Reddit often doesn't show the stuff we find, Techmeme is very Silicon Valley oriented and HN can get a bit noisy. Feel free to let me know what you guys think.

I think back at many products that failed to gain traction and in many cases they failed not because they didn't provide a "wow, that's cool factor" but more because they weren't built with the everyday consumer in mind.

Building something that's is cutting edge isn't the hardest part. It's building something that is cutting edge and easy to understand that's hard. The iPhone was a good example of a product that did both. We saw it and we got it and most of all, we WANTED it. Same with the iPad. Google Glass? Not so much.

I've been using an HTC One alongside my iPhone 5 for several months. When you first see it, you think "oh, this is great hardware, it's not far off from the iPhone." But then you live with it and use it and you realize it's a far cry from Apple hardware.

One example is with the hardware buttons. They are so flush against the body (both the sleep/wake and volume), that you almost always have to look to see what you're doing. I can't blindly turn down or up the volume nor can I wake up the phone in my pocket before I take it out like I do on my iPhone.

I've actually been cutting my own hair for probably close to 15 years now with a standard hair clipper. It's not just a buzz-cut either. I actually have more on the top (like a #7) and a less on the sides (#3).

It really just comes from practice and learning the shape of your head. Once you use clippers for a while you'll understand how it works. The only challenging part is trimming your neckline which is where I usually have my wife help me. Otherwise it's just a lot of practice.

One tip is always start with a higher numbered attachment and work your way down. It's better to cut off less than more when you're first learning. If you don't like the result, you can go to a barber and he can fix it for you.
