Was on a call with a bank VP that had moved to AWS. Asked how it was going. Said it was going great after six months but just learning about availability zones so they were going to have to rework a bunch of things.

Astonishing how our important infrastructure is moved to AWS with zero knowledge of how AWS works.

Is there any evidence that people who live in areas with better air have better health outcomes overall?

Hong Kong average life expectancy is 85. Iceland is 83. Hong Kong has poor air quality and Iceland has some of the best.

I'm for better air quality but it's just part of the puzzle.

High availability? Certainly. Elasticity? Not as well.

The right lesson is "Be a person that strives for excellence in all spheres of life".

I've been doing "Local IT" since '96 and I spun up an EC2 instance the day I saw it announced on slashdot and have been using both ever since. Both excel in some ways in the hands of good people.

Anyone thinking "I'll move to the cloud (or to on-prem) and all my problems will magically go away" is fooling themselves. If you suck at on-prem those underlying issues will carry into the cloud. If you have excellence in a well run on-prem install you'll experience great benefits leveraging the cloud.

For instance, Last month I was discussing a "move to the cloud" with a bank CTO. They had an unreliable on-prem network and moved to the cloud.. and they just discovered after suffering an outage in the cloud what an "availability zone" was. The same attitudes that made their on-prem unreliable, insecure, expensive will make the cloud the same way for them.

What I truly don't get is everyone compares piss poor on-prem servers with premium cloud offerings.

Sure, you can screw up on prem. But if you are only marginally competent spinning up services/servers/clusters takes but an instant, it's dirt cheap, and vastly more reliable.

Our only significant outages in the past 10 years have been our services dependent on big clouds. Including the Pre-Thanksgiving AWS one last year.

It's bee a couple years but the web browser plugins for BitWarden were unreliable. Our power users made it work but our average office user complained non-stop and moved back to using notepad. Maybe BitWarden has improved since then but it was too immature to rollout to the average office user.

If the primary purpose was to funnel money from you -> .mil -> military industrial complex it succeed wildly beyond all expectations. Otherwise not so much.

I lived and worked very close to Eglin Air Force base where all the initial F35's went. Many Air Force people thought the primary design decisions were to spend money and little else.

A contrary perspective... It could be they are using fake numbers but also are effective for some small businesses. I used it for a business and it drove tremendous sales. Everyone in the town that we inquired of had seen at least one ad on their facebook feed in a very short amount of time. All of this for a couple hundred $$.

Im a fb hater too. But it works for some small businesses.

It seems the older generation is so much more tolerant of toxins than us younger ones. For instance, at company lunches it seems at least 50%+ of the 25-45yrs have allergies/glucose issues while the older generation pounds down whatever they want. I have so many friends that have crazy allergies and sensitivities to toxins and almost no boomers that do. Maybe all the weak boomers were weeded out in their youth with lawn darts and no bike helmets or something? Or more likely not exposed to so many toxins when younger?

I have health issues and I try to correlate cause and effect.

I use a rower several times a day, it sits next to my desk. One thing I would love is an API that enables download of key stats like watts, times, etc.

I value raw data over slick apps. I have my own data sources for heart rate, glucose and a few other things. It would be great to integrate this into my home brew system.

Or start a line of exercise/health equipment that features integrations with fitness watches, indoor air quality monitors(VOC's), blood pressure, glucose, blood oxygen, weather(smog, pollen) etc etc.

It should help answer questions like Does my blood pressure/glucose behave different when: * row for 10 minutes and generate _x_ watts * pollen is high, smog is dense * use a standing desk vs sitting

So far it seems that busting out 10 minutes on a rower seems to have positive effects for at least 24hrs unlike moderate running. I would love to get the actual data on a chart.

oh com'n. As if twitter doesn't allow people to post stupid junk? Multiple accounts that posted "Kill all white women" "Today seems like a good day for another reminder that all republicans deserve to die" are still active along with plenty of other insane things. You can cherry pick bad stuff from any social media site.

* Significantly, the computer system shows vote adjudication logs for prior years; but all adjudication log entries for the 2020 election cycle are missing.

*Likewise, all server security logs prior to 11:03 pm on November 4, 2020 are missing. This means that all security logs for the day after the election, on election day, and prior to election day are gone

I work in the credit card industry. It's more complicated then that. Depending on who has EMV enabled correctly greatly shifts the fraud load. But banks can and do pay a huge part of the fraud which is passed on to consumers in higher interest rates. Merchants pay "cashback" by some definition but it's fungible. If there were no cashback that money would go directly to the banks and the end user would have lower interest rates.

There are a lot of amazing fancy services available... for a fee. We log billions of lines a year and use GrayLog because the other services are cost prohibitive.
