The biggest practical obstacle, other than getting elected, is the dress code for the house of commons which disallows military uniform, disallows face covering (while voting), and requires smart business attire. You could argue that he might be in violation of all three!

The name isn't really that much of a problem.

Unfortunately yes, and its the US that has choosen to do it. Its up to everyone else to recongise that it has already happened, or suffer the consequences if they choose not to respond.

If your business has everything on GCP/AWS/Azure (which is very common) and the Americans choose to weaponinse US tech against your country or business, then unless you have non-US backups you are probably dead and all of your employees unemployed. If you are a state, all of your services and functions are probably dead and you have to rebuild from nothing. That is certainly true of my company and there are some mutterings starting where I am internally about worst case disaster recovery if suddenly one of these suppliers just disapeared.

In this new world you cannot trust that this will not happen. As a European relying on the Americans is honestly probably little better than relying on the Russians and probably on par with relying on the Chinese in terms of risk profile. Note we are actually for all intents and purposes at war with Russia.

The amount of leverage the Americans have over Europe is insane, and every captial should be trying to mitgate that risk asap.

Well yes.

The addressable consumer market is just a lot bigger and more diverse than it used to be. You go back to the early late 90s and its a market dominated by teenage boys. Go back and look at some of the 00s and early 10s E3 presenations from the big three and its very cringe inducing how focused they are on a teenage boy demographic and appearing edgy and how blatantly sexist they are in their language. For example, at the E3 conference where MS announced xbox live (2004?) they explictly said that girls don't play games (there were actually plenty of girls that did play games at that time), but they might want to use xbox live to design t-shirts to sell to boys on their online marketplace. This was also still the era of booth babes trying to pull in men to booths with barely dressed women. Nearly every game ad was just a wall of exposions and violence or just the latest NFL game.

Today you have fully grown adults in their 30-50s with very different tastes and you have a lot lot more women and girls playing.

On top of we have a lot of diversity in who creates games and the kinds of games they can create and still be commerically successful. Lots of interesting narratively focused games, puzzles games, platformers, and more artsy games. But if you want your multiplayer shooter battlefield and CS2 are still there for you.

The US Military does use GPS, but ordinary civilians don't have access to high accuracy data. Commercial vendors can license for higher accuracy, but its a hybrid civilian/military system with higher quality data for military use cases.

Yeah, the whole concept of rights in the US are, in the main, about restricting what the federal government and states can do individuals.

Whereas in Europe our concept of rights include restrictions on the state, but also also might restrict non-state actors. We also have a broader concept of rights that create obligations on the state and private actors to do things for individuals to their benefit.

Valve already runs all native linux games I believe in the scout 1.0 runtime by default unless the vendor specifies a newer linux runtime. You can override some of this behaviour by going to the games's preferences within the steam client under "compatibility". It lets you force a specific native linux runtime or run the windows version instead using Valve's fork of wine, proton.

Sometimes if there are issues with the native linux release you can quickly swap over to the windows/proton version and see if that fixes issues.

Valve are absolute heroes in trying to create stable targets for linux gaming whether that be running windows games via proton or having a stable container target for native support.

I haven't had to boot into windows for nearly a year at this point and yet still playing new games on release without much issue (occasionally had to force to use a newer version of proton).

I'm not certain, but WORMs WMD is a pretty old 2016 title that might predate a lot of these container runtimes being available to games other than Valve's own first party titles like Dota 2 and CSGO/CS2.

Also, Valve has recently insituted changes about how native titles work forcing existing native titles onto the scout 1.0 runtime and giving developers the ability to pick newer stable targets.

Native titles will execute in 'Steam for Linux runtime 1.0 (scout)' by default, instead of the legacy runtime environment. This behavior is consistent with Steam Deck and promotes better compatibility across all Linux desktop distributions. Note that this new feature can be turned off globally with "-compat-force-slr off" on the Steam client command line.

Its also the case that the original version of this that was bouncing around in the 2010s was more of a gaint shell script hack and it was possible for games to depend upon the host system in way which could break over time. Today it is utilising stuff in the flatpak ecosystem:

They wrote everything in unsafe rust where its very possible to segfault. This is not a normal C to Rust port. In a normal port you would never aim to have 100% unsafe rust code - rather you would hive off small parts of your application where you need unsafe so its highlighted and auditable. This is clearly an excerise for fun.

I think there might end up being some problems which will be very challenging to solve with those resource constraints - namely memory. You will probably have to be pretty clever with your solutions.

I remember one of my naive brute force solutions from last year ended up allocating gigabtyes of memory. There were obviously more efficient solutions, but some of the inputs are pretty large and so hefty allocations might be difficult to avoid.

I mean... that isn't outside of the realm of possibility honestly. A lot of European states and the EU parliament have been making noises that could lead down that path. EU states actually take user data seriously, and its not like the US firms have been covering themselves in glory in that regard.

Openai isn't even close to too big to fail. Bank of America fails the entire banking system collapses and the entire real economy grinds to a halt. If GM fails hundreds of thousands lose their jobs and entire supply chains collapse. If power utilities fail then people start actually dying within hours or days.

If OpenAI fails nothing actually important happens.

I think most people would count java as languages with a less expressive type system. For one it doesn't catch null exceptions, whereas languages like rust do.

I think the point in the article is coming from Python or languages with less expressive type systems there is an awful lot of overlap between compiling/type checking in rust and some of the tests that get written in those languages.

Their thinking is basically if we have mass aircon then our residential energy consumption will skyrocket. New purpose built offices and retail pretty much always have aircon though because they have obvious productivity benefits.

However they also don't encourage passive cooling or low cost active solutions either such have making sure building have pass throughs for airflow, shading of windows, or fan systems. There are actually very few enforced rules about house listings. The market is pretty unregulated. However that house has an epc of C which would suggest its not insulated beyond maybe roof insulation or else isn't well insulated. To get a B or above you need to have a reasonable amount of insulation that you mostly only see in new build properties.

Well one thing is there is often a pretty big disconnect between the asset prices of these homes and the incomes of the current owners (these houses have exploded in value over the past 40 years), but setting that aside because you are basically right at least in terms of potential equity:

The main issue is to add insultation you either do exterior insulation which covers up all of the period features that make the property valuable in the first place (and could lead to complaints from neighbours) and for many terrace houses the space between the front of property and the public street is 0, or you give up interior floor space which even at this price point is actually pretty small already. Both lower the value of the home which for most British people is the primary and often only investment (UK financialisation of housing).

Yes, gas has been so cheap, until recently, that nobody has invested into insulation, and our housing stock is so poor quality and small in average size that insulation has lots of detractions in terms of property appearance and internal area.

The UK government back in 2010 actually had major plans for nation wide insulation, but famously the prime minster at the time, David Cameron, ordered the cutting of "the green crap" (widely reported to be his words) to help resolve some short term political problems with the budget in the early 2010s.

The fact that new builds are still installing gas boilers and without ventilation systems in 2024 is insanity. A family member just bought a brand new flat that has a gas boiler in it with zero space for a hot water tank and no ventilation. A brand new flat that will need retrofitting within the next 10 years.

I cannot find the source atm, but I recall that the government advice to builders is against installing ventilation systems to discourage retrofitting them in future for air conidtioning, which is makes it even harder to retrofit for heat pumps.

Exactly, that housing is super desirable by UK standards - probably amoung the most desirable housing in the UK. Pretty much all of those houses will have loft conversions (you can see the loft windows in the roof) made possible in part by removing their hot water tanks.

The reality is that it is actually a bit shit. and would cost tens of thousands to retrofit. The compromises that the owners would have to make in terms of either apperance or internal area make heat pumps very unattractive.

The big cost is the upfront cost of insulation and removal the existing heating systems.

Speaking about the UK (article is mostly about he US which will have their own problems), we have very poor quality housing stock with effectively zero insulation. You hold your hand to the exterior walls of your typical 2-3 bedroom terrace house (the most common type of home in the UK) in the winter and its just ice cold. For these homes the exterior wall are just solid brick and plaster with no air gaps. Many homes still don't have double glazing and their windows bleed even more heat. These homes go cold quickly when you turn off a gas boiler, and a heat pump just cannot keep up with the heat loss.

In addition large numbers of households in the UK have migrated to "combiboilers" heating systems that dispensed with hot water tanks for on demand hot water from their gas boiler. In the process many of these properties have converted the space previously designated for hot water storage to loft extensions or other home upgrades. UK homes are pretty small, and going to a heat pump system means going back to hot water storage, which most UK homes have no space for without costly changes to the home layout/structure potentially including sacrificing parts of precious loft conversions.

Frankly we might be better off just knocking down and rebuilding some of our housing stock at higher densities such is the cost of retrofitting and our housing shortages, but there is no political appetite in the UK for any radical solutions like that.
