Lots of very vocal yankees thought it was great when "pro-democracy" protesters in Hong Kong waved American flags and firebombed police and public buildings. That went on for about 6 months, if I recall. Karma's a bitch, America.

P.s. China never deployed the military in the Hong Kong insurrection.

According to the linked article this was achieved at 50 million degrees. The Chinese record was achieved at 100 million degrees.

I have also read that achieving productive fusion will require temperatures above 100 million degrees.

Most of my sources are pop-sci, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Russia asked for discussions on a new security infrastructure for Europe. The West refused out of hand because it expected Russia to collapse in the (then) coming war.

Russia did not collapse. It got stronger.

All this talk of the danger of Russia is self-fulfilling prophecy.

"The sun in the Southern Hemisphere moves counterclockwise across the sky over the course of the day, rather than clockwise. Instead of coming up on the left and going down on the right, as it does in the Northern Hemisphere, it comes up on the right and goes down on the left."

What? So Australians always observe sunrise facing North ? This is an amazing behavioural observation, worthy of some sort of high profile international prize!

"the country’s global realignment with all the worst people in the world."

And who are the best people in the world? Oh, of course, the Yankees and Brits, who actively supported apartheid (and who continue to support it in Israel).

"The depictions were clearly flawed: Several of the Asian Barbies were light-skinned; Thailand Barbie, Singapore Barbie, and the Philippines Barbie all had blonde hair."

Who is making assumptions here? My Asian gf has lighter skin than me (Northern European). Also, it is not uncommon for Asians to dye their hair.

I had never heard of "cumulative Bayesian skyline plots". A search on Google gave one hit, which was a dissertation quoting this study.

I assume they mean "coalescent Bayesian skyline plots".

Why invent a new name for something which already has a more informative name?

I have great difficulty imagining a culture which could socially sustain an N_e of 1:17 (male to female). Just do a few sample calculations. The priviledged males would be massacred.

A few things could explain it: (1) large scale male infanticide or male child castration (2) A disease which kills mainly male children.

Both of these alternatives suffer from one of the same problems as their proposal: How would the cause (whatever it was) spread so relatively quickly among distantly seperated populations ?

I think it far more likely they have made mistakes somewhere.

This is a good point. The average age of menopause in the US is, however, 51, not 40. That does not undermine your argument in principle, though.

Probably, a woman's chance of getting pregnant decreases the older she is, even if she is still menstruating. That would complicate the numbers but would not contradict your argument.

This is why a province in China is offering a cash bonus to couples who marry before the woman is 25.
