Seems weird to pit socialism against free markets.

There's nothing about disallowing private ownership of the Earth's common resources, natural monopolies, etc. that stops having free markets everywhere else.

If anything, allowing that is what corrupts free markets - as even with privatisation, you never have a real free market on the railways, highways, or electricity grid because we can only build a limited number of them and can't support multiple disjoint networks. But those corporations can then use that captive market for an unfair advantage entering other markets / verticals.

I think the best solution would be free markets and liberalisation, except in natural monopolies, and a lot of taxation against accumulated and inherited wealth (not income) to provide a level playing field and economic mobility.

American engineers are lucky to earn enough to be able to save up and do stuff like this, like on $200k you can save enough to really try a start-up for a year or two.

Whereas in Europe we're lucky to get $80k in the same jobs, and then the state steals half of that :/

Yeah, feminism has gone completely insane. At the moment of marriage all assets are divided equally in most countries, regardless of when they were obtained. And in many countries a man can even be liable for child support if his wife cheats on him.

That said a lot of countries actually have lower taxes for married couples like Germany, or separate it entirely like in Sweden.

I wish this were more commonly used - just having comments is so useful!

Are there already parsers available for Scala, Python, Java, etc.?

More useless bureaucracy that will harm start-ups (and side-projects becoming proto-startups).

I don't understand why people want more bureaucracy, it never works out well. Now the established companies like SAP will just pay expensive lawyers to check boxes for the certification, and European startups will face another massive obstacle (just like the GDPR, Cookie law, etc.)

A better law would be pushing for repairability - ban locked down bootloaders and closed firmware, force published schematics, component lists and replacements, open bootloaders, etc. - this would help solve a lot of electronic waste and also drive a new sector for startups.

The cabin they passed on the way there wasn't that far compared to how far they got in the end, the best option would likely have been to take what they had from the car and stay there. And try to set a tyre alight as a signal for help.

That said, since it seems there wasn't much investigation until the car sighting in October, it's unlikely even that would have been enough.

It's horrible that it seems the parents died before the children too. What an awful way to die, but totally understandable that in the moment they were more worried about retrieving the rental car and making it to LA on time than finding shelter for the long haul.

We have labour-saving technology though.

Automation leads to higher productivity, so those fewer people can earn more and spend more.

The economy will do just fine.

I think it'll be a rocky time though, we're facing a new Industrial Revolution - where the existing capitalists would prefer to drive down wages and destroy trade unions via mass immigration, and ordinary workers want to reverse their worsening standard of living. Brexit was just the start of this, but I think we'll see more radical movements until this is resolved.

Why is it our responsibility?

Intervened on which side in Georgia? That Georgian government was absolutely terrible, putting dissidents in prison, firing on protests, etc. - just because they're anti-Russia doesn't make them good.

We should just try to live in peace and focus on our own nations and stop making enemies.

Yeah, Amazon has a system to determine the most cost-effective shipping, including where to ship from to begin with, and even shipping the same item even if it belongs to another seller, if it is easier to ship.

It's not just a greedy algorithm like a market system to get the lowest costs for the first orders only.

And what's wrong with that? At the end of the day, they need revenue to continue development. And this is a good balance between allowing FOSS use-cases whilst not allowing free-loading from proprietary, commercial uses.

Real estate shouldn't be an investment. Just let people own the homes they live in. Everything else should be well-regulated perhaps even by government monopoly (e.g. first hand contracts in Sweden, or council houses in the UK).

The entire reason we have such issues is because housing has become such a popular investment.

Worth nothing that Erasmus has government support though. It has a lot of structure and effort put into it.

And your home institution still gives you the degree itself, so there's no complications there either.

They executed Joe Hill and Fred Hampton, and imprisoned Eugene Debs for years.

Just look at COINTELPRO for example, that's what happens.
