nobody is against his moral stance. the problem is that he’s playing the “principled stand” game on a budget that cannot sustain it, then externalizing the cost like a victim. if you're a millionaire and can hold whatever moral line you want without ever worrying about rent, food, healthcare, kids, etc. then "selling out" is optional and bad. if you're joe schmoe with a mortgage and 5 months of emergency savings, and you refuse the main kind of work people want to pay you for (which is not even that controversial), you’re not some noble hero, you’re just blowing up your life.

if the alternative to 'selling out' is making your business unviable and having to beg the internet for handouts(essentially), then yes, you should "sell out" every time.

I want to sympathize but enforcing a moral blockade on the "vast majority" of inbound inquiries is a self-inflicted wound, not a business failure. This guy is hardly a victim when the bottleneck is explicitly his own refusal to adapt.

Basically all these puzzles are trying to train your combinational vision and calculation. An important component of calculation is getting good at executing 'forcing' moves (moves where your opponent has only one or two plausible choices) which are more clearly illustrated in attacking positions or 'Mate in X' positions. Even though the most readily available material is from 'attacking' positions, this skill is transferrable to many other kinds of positions(e.g pawn endings). Defense on the other hand is often more vague with more than one optimal strategy and rarely forcing, so there's just not a lot of good material to draw from.

Exactly right. Essentially the consumerist, "fast food for the brain" idea is what I was struggling to point out. Having read a little of this thread though, I'm more open to the idea that even what seems to me as fluff is pretty useful as a regular centering mechanism so I'm just moderately indifferent instead of annoyed now.

I can't put my finger on it but I always find this modern(Americanized?) peddling of stoicism too pretentious and vapid as to be not only useless but actively off-putting to me. The fact that life is short is already central to most adults and I don't see what purpose any of these reminders serve except to seem high-minded (and annoying). The faux precision of this "clock" also bothers me but that's a different story.

Even though I was familiar with most of Chomsky's spiel, this was a total joy to listen to and I was very inspired by the great righteous indignation and moral clarity that Chomsky still speaks with and only he can summon.
