It would be nice if Economist could post an article discussing the supply of "marriageable women" (using their words).

Also, plenty of old failing "you can have it all" narrative like:

"Women have learned that they can be surgeons and physicists without losing their femininity."

In much of the world they still enjoy social and legal privileges simply because they have a Y chromosome.

But there were some good conclusions: "More generally, schools need to become more boy-friendly...".

It takes more than just being better when you are late to market.

Self driving cars are fast approaching. Will anyone beat Google at this?

Uber? They are the fresh blood and moving fast in everything.

Maps will have offline navigation soon. Why use Bing or Apple maps?

I use Nokia Here Maps. They have offline navigation today. On my device. Which is not Android.

Android is everywhere.

Not on iPhones. Not on content-producing devices.

Google Now and their new Google Now features look great.

2015s version of Clippy. Predictive analysis is not ready. Beware of the hype curve.

Is there any space that they are not in / won't enter?

Their business is still revolving around ads. They are lagging in enterprise. They cannot beat Amazon at shopping. They cannot beat Apple/Microsoft at premium device design quality. They are not perfect.

PS: It's great that Google exists, but don't put it on pedestal.

Well done Microsoft: inspiring not one, but two major competitors. Metro aka Modern aka Material rocks!

You can use non-legacy non-ubiquitous languages (as opposed to HTML/JS/CSS), because it's not public-facing. Microsoft is sending a mixed message to enterprise: should they bet on HTML5 and possibly quit the MS ecosystem whatsoever, or XAML is still a major investment for Microsoft? They need to demonstrate that WPF/XAML team is more important than ASP/Azure team.

That's cool, as long as everyone has both options.

Thousand years later, first colonists in a different galaxy:

- Remember that dude from our childhood?

- Yeah, choosing to live a mere 70 years - so weird...

- Never mind, let's keep Terra-forming..."

Becoming rich within 1000 years is more plausible than within ~80 years. Unless the concept of being "rich" disappears due to progress.

Most lives already end with a disease. You don't die from old age.

Investing in things other than not-freaking-dying - now that's awkward.

Is that still a requirement for start-ups? Now, if they are not going to spend at least half the money on a new fancy office - that would be a major concern for investors.

"... 'passion’ ... means you have an enthusiasm for your work that extends beyond your working hours"

For me passion is when you are up-to-date with the trends and strive to (re-)factor your code to be better.

Unpaid overtime is most definitely a NO though, but the pay doesn't have to be immediate.
