Austin is a huge tech town, and rapidly growing. I get a lot of recruiter emails to go there. Same with KC, but to a lessor extent.

I was just in Montreal - the difference in prices with the US was staggering. You forget how wealthy we are, sometimes, even compared to the rest of the developed world. (Had an incredible French meal with 2 bottles of wine over 3 hours and it came out to ~$90 a head American)

This is kind of meandering, and it loses the thread a bit in the end (it feels like he's getting to a point he's uncomfortable with ideologically), but it's extremely accurate. The bigger point about creating the future - that he seems to miss - is that it's a future _not everyone wants_, which drives a huge part of the "maga/bernie" divide he discusses.

He is right though - the rate of downward mobility among my young, bourgeoisie 20-somethings friends in NYC is shocking. 90%+ of my friends don't save anything, but take elaborate vacations several times a year, or go to multiple, expensive festivals. I have no idea what most of them would do if they lost their jobs. One of my friends quit their job and instantly is poor. They spent 3 weeks in Europe a month ago. He really hits the nail on the head in exploring their motivations, in my opinion.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm - you realize this is just "median American lifestyle," right?

The idea that you can afford a house and a boat and time with your kids on a single upper middle class income in, say, Missouri is called "normal" outside of SF/NYC.

Probably not a huge issue - look up first home language in Texas or Arizona. Texas is also like 50%+ Hispanic, and I can't imagine the modern GOP being anti-Texas.

Does anyone else deeply distrust Vox? The quality varies a LOT, they frequently present opinions as facts, etc.

The weird thing is they have moments of brilliance like the "Liberal Smugness" piece - but search "Vox News article" and it looks like even the left really hates them.

They seem more interested in telling me how to feel than the facts, I guess. I wish the rest of the world had the same pride in journalism as say, the Economist or the New Yorker

As someone that doesn't use the program but does own an etf that covers the market, it's weird to think that I benefit from this change - at most a penny or so.

I don't think reddit's problem is harassment, I think it's groupthink, extremely low quality/uninformed discourse, and brigading. I wish that there was a site with an hn-level of moderation that covered issues like bikes, local news, etc. Maybe that's just not possible?

I really love how self-enforcing the community is here towards snark and lazy comments, which have absolutely destroyed Reddit. Edginess is much easier than proper discussion.

I dig it, but a tiling WM is a fundamentally different paradigm than the standard WMs. I haven't used one, so I had to look up screenshots. If you're writing ad copy - which this fundamentally is - you need to consider these things.

Why would you write a blurb for a window manager, without screenshots? That's literally all it does!
