Java 1.0 Turns 25 5 years ago

That stability comes with a huge cost, for example, Value types, desperately needed, has been going on FOREVER (7 years and counting) with no end in sight ..

Atlas is a fully managed instance. Whats being referenced to here is running your own Cassandra cluster, which is by all accounts, heck of a lot harder than running a Postgres instance.

M1 Macs Review 6 years ago

It’s also a 7nm design that has to deal with things like PCI busses, external memory on a narrower bus etc. so actually it do very well compared to the m1.

I’m interested to see how Apple can make this scale, can you get a Mx laptop with 64 Gb? Or will that has to be soc external memory for the process to scale?

why does Europe need a military?

Why does the US need a military? Canada? Mexico?

Its a global world, EU as one of the biggest blocks needs its own military for many reasons. Its time to cut the reliance of the US, but remain very close allies.

If defense spending is done right, purchased locally by local companies, a lot of the money circles back into the economy.

Meanwhile, Russia, a developing nation with a history of muscular military engagements in the region, is spending more than six percent of its much larger GDB on military.

The Russia GDP is less than 10% of the GDP of EU, or the same size as the Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) countries.

Its population is shrinking rapidly due to low birth rates and very high death rates.

Its ruled by a totalitarian dictator that regularly tries to murder his opponents.

It seeks by all means to stir up unrest in its surroundings by misinformation.

Its one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

All of these are good reasons why the EU should rapidly invest in its own defense force. Putin will step-down one way or another the next 20 years and then it may get ugly, nobody knows who are waiting in the wings...

For 95% of all game developer the future is a engine like Unreal or Unity and your scripting language of choice.

The rest, triple A titles and engine developers may chose something else, but the inertia of C/C++ will make that a very long process.

Python is certainly popular, but the TIOBE Index ranking is not credible.

Quote: "The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. "

According to this index, "Logo", beats out Rust, Scala, Kotlin, and Cobol.

I cannot remind myself when I last time saw a course, book or even any source code covering Logo.

This must be some very poorly vetted, automatically collected data that tripped over something provoking the ranking.

Is Rust web yet? 6 years ago

The only rust jobs I’ve seen so far are “crypto/blockchain”, but I’m just casually follow the development, anyone knows other niches adopting Rust?

In Sweden at least, "allemansrätten" as a law, comes from a change made in the 40s, to resolve conflicts between city dwellers need for "friluftsliv" and landowners, in-favor of the former.

Since 1994 "allemansrätten" is part of the constitutional law, securing the right for everyone to go anywhere under certain circumstances (cant stay longer than a couple of nights in the same place, cant stay within eyesight of a permanent resident etc etc)
