Same here, I have kids, and used to show them legal content on Youtube. Now I download everything because YouTube was showing horror movie ads between episodes.

I have the Xperia Z3C, it lasts 48 hours.

My issue with cheaper phones is: I don't mind it being slow, I don't mind it having a bad display. But I do mind the camera quality. I take a lot of pictures (multiple a day) which I treasure because it's pictures of my kids. But I hate having a camera with me, so my phone has to have a good camera. There aren't cheap phones with good cameras.

As someone who left the valley. I think not. I think we are the lucky ones. The valley is only useful for VCs and having an enourmous choice of startups. But honestly life is better away from it. Unless you can afford a 3M$ house.

I don't think this is the first time I see this type of concept (not sure).

One thing is, you'll have to get a ton of users at start. Unless people start actively using it everywhere, everyone will slowly stop using it because there will be no content. I do believe it will be hard to achieve.

I love Trello but I use it for myself (I don't share it with anyone else). I am using it for personal projects and work. But I wouldn't be really interested by a such analytic tool (probably because of my usage). Not really information that would help me improve productivity.

As a Millennial with a 2200 sqft house, a job and no student loans I don't feel the same way.

But I guess in some way I was lucky (no student loans because I studied in an international school, which was much cheaper). And housing because I moved to a cheap area and telecommute to a company in Silicon Valley.

Don't try to get money while you are 16. At least if you don't need it badly. Build stuff, you'll learn so much more. I am 27 and two kids, getting paid a lot but I regret the time where I could spend hours on my own project. Now if I have an hour per week I am happy.

Strangely, my only hobby is programming. I program during the day, and then when I have some free time I like to program some more. But it can be very different programming, mobile instead of web etc...

Why do I still enjoy programming after doing it for a whole day? I like to be creative, and working for someone limits my creativity. Programming for myself allows me to create projects in a complete different way.

I was able to operate the Nexus 5 even with one hand. (my hands aren't too big). But I had to get a slim case, the heavy case was too big for it.

After a year I dropped the phone for the 700th hundred time and it broke, now I got the Xperia Z3 Compact.

I do agree with you, I never want a phone I can't fully operate with one hand. I often can only use one hand (the other carries a kid, or a kid bike or something kid related).

Yea my rate is the same too. I've lived in many places, and only in Canada I had variable rate.

Well it's meant only for the American Market (no 4G elsewhere and calls very expensive). So that Americans traveling aboard don't have to pay insane amounts of money.

I for example have to get a new sim card each time I travel to a new country, it is a pain. With Google I can just keep their plan, and not worry about getting a local sim card. Most americans don't travel for an entire month, so we have to pay our monthly plan anyways. This just allows us to use our phone for free without paying extra in other countries.

newsfeed reader I tried to launch twice, the first time it ran for a year, and then I shut it down a month before google reader was announced to shut down. if I kept it running it might have worked, it was just expensive for me. the second time i worked on it, it was cool but didn't have enough good features compared to newsblur or feedly, didn't even bother launching again.

I too have recently moved, I haven't yet purchased a security system but I have been looking around, these are the things I was looking for:

- No monthly fee

- A loud alarm

- Not necessarily calling the cops, I just want to be contacted, I can call the cops myself if needed.

I have found only two systems I like:

- The most expensive one: SmartThings, about 550$ for what I want, looks easy to set up. The only mentioned inconvenience is the wiress range of the hub. I have a pretty big house so I need to consider this.

- Skylink SC-2200 security system on Amazon. This is much cheaper 187$. But requires a landline (I don't have one). You can make it work using an "OBi100 VoIP" (also on amazon). The Obi100 can connect to google voice (free account but only in the US), it has a landline phone port which allows you to make the skylink system work. From what I have read you also need a cheap (8$) landline phone to make test calls at first.

Now I prefer the SmartThings system because it's simpler, and also you can control everything from an app on your phone. Skylink all it does is placing a phone call to your phone when something gets triggered ("door X has been opened"). Both systems used in this way have a failing point, your cable connection. If someone goes outside my house, and cuts the cable, my system is ineffective. With Skylink I think you can set up a sim card, and other system too. But that ends up costing a monthly fee, which I don't want.

I still haven't decided, I don't have much extra money for any system right now as I've spend so much for the house.

Came here to say this. A couple of millions to get started, and then you can get power.

I feel powerless when I release an android app and can only put in a couple of hundreds for advertising. When if I had 50k to put in, i'm sure it would help my app's popularity.

This is almost 4 years old. This isn't "Hacker Archives", it's "Harcker News".

For me middle class (in america) would mean:

- Being able to buy a house with a yard an hour or less away from work.

- Being able to buy the amount of cars needed (1 to 2 cars on average).

- Being able to afford groceries/health insurance/school for everyone in the family.

But I know this is pretty random, it's just my idea of middle class.

Yes, it changed the way I view the world.

Sometime during my teenage years, I started not caring about the world around me, and just tried to improving myself. Think faster, go faster, multitask, get things done. Although improving these abilities are cool, they focused my life on getting more money, getting promoted. Not really focusing on what really matters: being a better person, being happy, enjoying life.

Meditation changed my view. I try to spend more time with family. When I take out the trash I enjoy the path I am walking on, the stars in the skies, the wind.

All this sounds a bit "hippie", but I am more happy now than I was before.

I highly recommend meditation to anyone. I am meditation using the iphone/android app "headspace". It is really helpful for anyone that is beginning with meditation. It guides you through all the process.

Well employers get discounts for getting a large amount of these expensive. Food might not be true, but if an employer would give you the exact amount of money he pays for insurance, you would get an insurance a lot crappier, simply because the employer gets discounts.

I am currently paying insurance out of the pocket, it sucks. When I'll reach 30 (no more catastrophic plans), I'll definitely will find another employer with health insurance.

They lowered the price to 200$ with no contract only a couple of months after it came out. That is extremely cheap for the hardware. Nonetheless I don't know anyone with a Firephone, and it didn't really pick up steam afterwards either.
