There is no good solution to revenge porn. It is impossible to enforce that only a single person has access to an image (physical or digital), and that the person doesn’t redistribute the image.

The only way I can see this working is that people in explicit images need to publicly declare their intent for who can see the images (maybe a hash of the image content and the name of the person who can see that content) and then when the courts prosecute revenge porn the intent can be referenced to see if it was meant to be shared or not. There are still issues in that there is no proof that the person being accused of revenge porn actually distributed the images vs the defendant actually sending the images to other, or the image was leaked by a hack.

I think the best thing we can do is try and educate teens on the dangers of revenge porn like we do on the consequences of having sex. We cannot stop teens from having sex or taking nudes, but we can at least try to educate them as best we can.

My understanding is that LSD/DMT can “re-wire” your brain and give you an out of body experience that allows your psyche to realize what patterns are serving you and which ones are not (hence why LSD/DMT being very successful curing addicts). My theory is that early trauma and a somewhat explosive father has lead my nervous system to be on a hair trigger as a coping mechanism, if somehow I can convince my nervous system that this is no longer a necessary coping mechanism that would help.

This sounds similar to me. I get cortisol spikes throughout the day and that can interfere with my sleep.

Conventional recommendation is to go see a talk therapist, but I have never really bought into it. Other thing I have seen recommended is LSD/DMT which I would have tried by now if I wasn’t married, it seems like too bug of a risk that LSD/DMT will alter my psyche in such a way that ruins my marriage which is not fair to my partner.

Best I have found is detaching from society, back country camping, no technology. But I don’t want to become a hermit in the woods to just be able to sleep regularly.

I think if there is no retaliation to a nuclear strike on Ukraine, every nuclear capable country will rush towards nuclear weapons as fast as possible.

The reason being, Europe has a long term understanding they are under the nuclear umbrella of the USA which means that Europe does not need to maintain their own atomic weapons. If that long term agreement does not hold, the only way to deter Russia is to have nuclear weapons of your own since you cannot rely on deterrence from other countries.

Once everyone has nukes, Russia can no longer bully countries around because they will glass Moscow. This is a worse state than today where Russia can invade countries using conventional weapons without much consequence.

I don’t understand how a governing system requires a majority to reject a change to the status quo. The status quo must be maintained unless a majority decides to change the status quo.

It is the equivalent of having a gas pedal in a car that is fully activated unless you put your foot down.

I think non-technical EMs are fine, but they need to manage an appropriate headcount. I see EMs who manage 2-3 ICs and have no other responsibilities, those EMs need to either take on more ICs or start coding.

That is my point. I work at a large multinational and we run tens of thousands of kubernetes nodes on-prem and Im pretty sure that would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars per year to run in EKS. We run on-prem nodes about equivalent to c6a.32xlarge and even with 2 year reserved pricing you are looking at $17k/year/node. At 20000 nodes you are looking at $340 million/year, not including egress fees or any other AWS service charges (such as EBS).

I can tell you with certainty that the all-in costs to run kubernetes on-prem (including staffing costs) is a lot less than $340 million/year AND we don’t have vendor lock in. In total we have 7 full time engineers building and running on-prem kubernetes. The more nodes you have, the more it makes sense as the team size is mostly independent of the number of nodes, so that team of 7 could also run 40000 nodes without issues. The cost becomes dominated by the capex to purchase hardware. I would say team size is log(nodes).

For a company the scale of Netflix, I would assume the math is similar — especially since they already have in house expertise to run their own hardware — but maybe they get a very steep discount from AWS.

Inflation makes servicing debt cheaper which incentivizes getting loans to build things.

It also leads to those who have little bargaining power to become underpaid as they cannot negotiate higher salaries as inflation squeezes them.

Anyone know if Netflix does anything for the k8s storage layer? I imagine they are at the scale where etcd starts to go kaboom? Or maybe they have enough cells where that isn’t a problem?

Given Amazon and Google have their own secret sauce for replacing etcd, I am wondering if Netflix does anything special?

You have no way of possibly knowing this. And I bet you its not true.

I do know this for a fact because my income has 10x over the course of my career and as I have made larger donations to match my increased income I do feel more satisfaction.

I’m not trying to belittle what you are doing, I am replying to someone who said to the order of “you can just be like mitchelh by donating as well” which I don’t think is true due to the orders of magnitude more impact that large donations can result in.

Most capital owned by billionaires is not taxed until it is sold, so in the case of Hashimoto and others they most likely have not paid tax on the majority of their wealth.

How would the "very small wealth tax" be calculated, that you propose?

In the same way we calculate income tax, we make it up. Most numbers I see are between 1-3%. We could just start at 1% as that is the most conservative number.

How is it out of touch? I donated much more than Hashimoto did relative to our net worths, but I cannot deny that I would have felt much more satisfied making a 1000x impact if I was a billionaire.

I donated $6000 to a halfway house last year and that doesn’t even come close to covering a single bed for a year. If I was a billionaire I could have built an entire halfway house.

If you assume Hashimotos net worth is one billion dollars, a $400k donation is equivalent to a $400 donation if your net worth is one million dollars.

I don’t believe donating $400 really feels that satisfying, the impact is fairly negligible in most contexts whereas donating $400k can very visibly improve a lot of lives.

I think this illustrates just how much a billion dollars is and maybe why a very small wealth tax can be used for a lot of good in society.
