This is exciting but a little too early for its time. Four months early to be specific.

One reason is because it supports multiple languages and frameworks. Not just .NET.

You do know that visual studio has been supporting multiple languages well before there even was a .net? It still continues to do so.

Is it just me or this whole thing seems to be a big misunderstanding? To me it seems that the point the ads are making is : if you really have work that needs to be done, you can do it anywhere. Not necessarily you should work everywhere. Here it feels like 37signals is just tagging along the campaign for free publicity.

Nokia has been making great windows phones for cheap like the 521 that routinely available for as little as 70 bucks. The hardware is lower spec as compared to this one but windows phone is known to run well on slower hardware. It will be interesting to see how well Android runs on this.

I am sure Google would ban this pronto. This reduces their ability to exclude other forks of Android from using the app store.

Glance is the feature I love a lot on my Nokia as well. The glance screen allows me to look at things like time on my phone without even turning it on.

Microsoft security essentials is what I use. Primarily because I have been using it on my older windows 7 machine.

Consider getting your kid a touch screen laptop if you are still in the market for one. I wasn't a bug fan of metro until I got one and now I use it more and more.

I don't think there are ways to get rid if the Metro UI completely or at least I haven't come across any. Probably because I wasn't looking for one. The sequence of pressing Windows key and typing the name of the program is what I was using in Windows 7 anyway and that just works. One of my annoyances was how the control panel was still old UI and that has gone Metro in 8.1 which is nice. Also now since links from within IE open side by side and you have more control over how to layout windows in metro, I actually see myself using it more and more.

The mix of Metro UI and the old desktop has been the primary reason for people to not like windows 8. But they have made a lot if small tweaks to minimize the transition from Metro to old UI. That is the best part of Windows 8.1 to me.

Wait. What? Have you tried collaboration with a Word before saying this? I make my living collaborating on documents in Word. Which part of it did you have a problem with? I have found only OneNote to be any better than Word but alas it lacks a bunch of Word features.

Curious what kind of foisting. I'm sure people might have preferred things in word format. Its just a matter of convenience. But I doubt its foisted. I've seen PDF files to be as annoyingly common particularly in academia. I hate it but I get around by just saving my document as PDF and move on. He's just being overly dramatic.

It is mu h a worry as a factor that makes the company much stable as compared to some others it competes with. Look at BlackBerry or Nokia. Their fall from grace was precipitous. Google and to some extent Apple are one trick ponies. Although its a damn good trick, its risky to only know how to make money doing only one thing.

Well anytime you see yourself missing a real laptop, remember you could have always gotten the Surface Pro. Its a complete laptop and more.

When it comes to filling up the gap, I am surprised that Xbox was not mentioned particularly given how much Microsoft has tried to portray it as a complete living room entertainment package as opposed to just a gaming console.

This is an alternative that duprisimgly never came up. But my.yahoo.com is a very simple and functional RSS aggregator. I moved to that.

I think the point he makes about hanging in to it in a hope that Microsoft is going to improve it is the key. Looks like with windows 8.1 they are making a lot of changes based on the feedback, and giving that release away for free. Microsoft better stick to this fast iterative update process if they want people to bet on the new OS.

Why is remoting up to the dev machine in you office not an option then ? If the tablet is just used as a dumb terminal then it makes a bit sense. I do that all the time with mu surface.
