When I opened it with ImageMagick it appears to be a transparent PNG. Very clever trick, as it seems to use Twitters black background when viewing an image to achieve the effect.

Wine is always a viable option, especially for older games. With DirectX 11 support coming later this year, almost every Windoze only game should hopefully work.

I also hear they want to start doing binary blobs and ditch their open source drivers. Yay!

The way the GitHub page is set up is weird. Basically two different plugins are hosted on one repo. The root tree you linked to has the original client required plugin. Go under "Skypeweb" folder and you'll see it's an entirely different plugin that you can compile and don't need a client (also has its own README).

"third-party Skype client (e.g. to have support in Pidgin)" Funny because recently the old Skype plugin for Pidgin was re-written to utilize the new HTTP Skype. So now you have a nice client-less Skype chat in Pidgin. I'm certain someone could study it to write their own client.

Quaddicted is a great site ran by a great Quake archivist/enthusiast (Spirit). He's helped keep back ups of Quake mods and maps and even written a java application to download and install them easily onto your Quake installation from his site. Just don't appreciate the domain name, appreciate the guy too!

I remember a while back Xash3D was a very illegal project gathering code from many other projects (sometimes without any form of credit). I'm unsure if the situation has dramatically changed, but I still wouldn't trust the project.

Something like this with Steam happened to my friend not too long ago. It was very saddening because he literally lost years of files (including personal projects) and salvaged what he could. That was with the Steam Beta and I caught Steam doing this myself (after he told me what happened). I was lucky to stop the script and switched out of the beta. At the time he reported this to Valve themselves and said they were "investigating the issue and knew of it". Seems to still be here, sigh.

I know the morale here is keep your files backed up but come on, this is a ridiculous issue Valve still hasn't fixed.

Gnash died off but Lightspark is still around and making progress. I guess Mozilla just started their own project to suite their needs.

Tox has interested me more since it's inception, mainly because it's open source and completely relies on peer to peer connections. I've seen some other open source alternatives that aren't as light weight and still centralized to some degree. Wire, if it really wants to be a "Skype killer" in my opinion, should go open source and be more reassuring about how they are protecting our privacy.

Seems nice, however I do like the idea of a GTK2 based and tabbed terminal. Sadly, a lot of them feel very bloated.

Hi, I'm the author of XLennart. I feel that you've missed the point of my very simple mod. XLennart is no more of a personal attack than XBill is a personal attack against Bill Gates (which is isn't). These are more of metaphors about the invasions of pieces of software, and the freedom of choice. I do not like Lennart or his ideologies, but he has the right to them. Just because silly clones of him get killed in this game doesn't mean I encourage, support, or desire anyone to kill him.

Same here, I love using WM with OSS. Feels like bread and butter, especially considering WMMixer (and many dockapps) were made for OSS.

Slackware or Gentoo is an option.

I feel that the only reason Gnome needs SystemD is because RedHat said so. I honestly think making a DE require a specific init system is silly.

RedHat is already forcing systemd by making it a ridiculous dependency in things like Gnome 3. Wouldn't surprise me if they went to this level, but I would want proper evidence.
