We're hiring across the board at Local Motors.

We run ideation, design and engineering challenges on our responsive Django/AngularJS based platform, and we are white labeling this platform at armycocreate.com (to develop soldier solutions) and at a location to be announced this spring (for a fortune 10 company).

Our core site at localmotors.com is based around automotive innovation -- we currently are manufacturing the Rally Fighter (rallyfighter.com), Verrado Drift Trike (verradodrifttrike.com) and the LM Racer (localmotors.com/racer) in our Microfactory network. We currently are headquartered in Phoenix, have a Microfactory in Las Vegas, and are expanding to the East Coast in the spring.

In the past we entered and won the Experimental Crowd Sourced Vehicle challenge hosted by DARPA in 2010 when we produced the XC2V in under 6 months time from design to delivering the vehicle to President Obama.

Our tech team is currently about 10 people deep ranging from server admin, db, UI/UX design and Python/JS Engineering roles. We currently only list a Front End position on our Jobs page but we're definitely interested in expanding our Tech Team, building some native iOS/Android apps.

This is much much more than a code factory... we're actually developing real products whose inception happens on the web platform. Our in-house knowledge is deep in design, engineering and manufacturing of physical products rooted in automotive -- but we certainly could use more help on the web side of things. We've got a great core on our tech team right now but we've had the hardest time finding talent in the Phoenix area.

If you've got the skillset and experience we're looking for, you'll have a huge amount of influence on the platform's direction, in addition to the opportunity to crank out some super cool features that solve real problems -- but you'll be able to choose your own destiny, which for me is almost more interesting than just one or the other option.

We're not totally against remote work but we'd prefer you to have a presence in one of our Microfactory locations, or at least have the ability to spend a significant amount of time (>30%) in Phoenix at our headquarters, at least for your onboarding period.

Diggnation is completely awesome and Im extremely sad to see it go. Say it ain't so! Alex & Kevin have produced an extremely entertaining and enlightening show. I completely disagree that Kevin Rose has "never... said anything substantial", quite the contrary. Each show is not only a friendly conversation that is easy to pay attention whether you're a tech professional or a complete layman, but the insights into Digg and it's struggles over time as well as other interesting anecdotes about technology and its evolution have taught me a lot.

Hope they change their minds on this.

They've got to be killing it on advertising but I would happily pay to watch Diggnation instead of Foundation, although There's definitely value in the later as well.

Nice post :) Unfortunately I've been mostly solitarily hacking for the past 10 years while in school and then while solo-operating my own web business. While the web is a huge part of the business now, a lot of the employees are not within the tech team, so network resources have already been exhausted.

Sounds cool ? I would have signed up for a trial or looked at it a little more if you didn't make it painfully obvious that after I take the time to set it up I'll be charged $5 per month in the future. FWIW I spent about 5 seconds on the website and then left.

This strategy should work well long term. sarcasm

1) use your head to do your thinking because if it's near and dear to your heart that will just cloud your judgement

2) it seems like a viable niche industry for its own networking iste

3) you dont have domain knowledge to build a site for this niche

4) it sounds like you need to use your 1500 existing members to rally behind the community and go out and help you find someone who can make this work.

5) have you considered traveling to nyc, hollywood, i dont know, wherever modeling is big, setting up some meetings and trying to sell your idea to the highest bidder?

I really posted this with the hopes of having some discussion about the validity of slapping together a few generic websites to squat on these domains that I own and build some back links to some other sites.

Does any one have any feedback to that degree, good or bad?

I've seen the trade domains threads here on HN. The domains I have are all niche related so I really don't think there'd be any interest.

So how would one go about split testing a subscription service on a website without alienating some users? In my case I'm selling to a small (about 5k-15k people). Inevitably someone would realize that they were paying as much as half price as some others ?

My question is what are the best resources on this topic?

I suppose i need 2.5 as many times the members at the $20 rate to make generate the same revenue. I've got 100 users @ $50, but will I get 250 @ $20 ? If I did get 250 at $20, the revenue hasn't gone up.

$50 seems like the better plan to me. Ofcourse, if I ask the users who haven't subscribed and still use the free model, they think $50 is too much and they would be more likely to pay $20.

I'm sure there's lots of discussion on this topic out there, but as soon as you type in "membership subscription" at google you get garbage like pay pal and netflix, and not any nerdy discussion on the topic.

I don't "Know" that they haven't applied for the rights but the manner in which the content drips in it is pretty obvious that they are just harvesting what they can come up with based on a google alert on our niche. Copying photos and text in their entirety from these newspapers. I find it hard to believe that they are getting copyright permission within 24 hours of the article appearing on the newspaper's website.

The Newspaper sources are based in US, Canada, UK, NZ, Australia.

Very cool. Unfortunately I just dont like to watch the news. It takes too much time, I could blow through several text articles faster.

Consider blowing this out from just "news" to an array of sortable niche topics and you might have something more interesting to a more diverse audience.
