On JumpHigher [1], an app that helps you improve your vertical leaps, just using your phone camera. It's functional already, but very early, the algorithm took quite a while to nail ( still far from perfect ).

I'm a CEO of a small consulting company, and I love working with startups ( or hate working with huge companies, matter of perspective ), and I always thought that to be better at that we have to be able to launch our own stuff.

Also, I never launched anything solo, working alone is hard for me so this was a challenge. I want to continue working on it on the side for a while.

The main audience for now would be basketball players that want to dunk, or anyone that wants a good leg workout and track the progress.

In high level play you have to manage your land, the hard thing is how to find the optimal route to collect your army: It's advisable to take around 15-18 turns to collect your army from an area and attack in the remaining 10-7 turns, so you can attack before the enemy numbers increase. In high level 1v1 play what matters most is the area you have, if you can get +1 area per 25 rounds from your enemy you'll probably win.

But! As both of you collect more and more area it gets really time consuming and after a point you just can't collect your army optimally. I'd argue that the biggest difference between skill levels at the highest levels is how efficient the collecting is. At that point you'll need cities. Always look for the opponent's counter to know how many cities your opponent has.

Not that it matters but I was a top 5 1v1 player quite a while ago.

One data point: I've been to couples therapy quite a few years ago and we've been getting better and better ever since.

From my experience a priest would go into that discussion with the goal of keeping the couple together, while the therapist would want ( a good one ) the best for them, whatever that may be. If your goal is to stay together with someone don't go to a therapist.

Just a personal anectode: I'm pretty sure that this wasn't true for me. I think some humans have an instinct for survival, maybe all of them, if a persons emotional needs are met then developing, advancing, learning is a natural byproduct without any external pressure. Just like we learn to talk and walk without someone telling us to do.

All the push just hurt me in the end, I would be a lot better off without traditional school, rarely I learned anything useful there.

Been an EE, doing web dev currently. I'm always interested in business development, humans etc.. That's the question basically. Would it :)? One side says it would the other says that genders are statistically different.

I don't know about them. Sure, the 0.1% of them can be politicians / CEOs, but it's not "available" for people in general ( it requires a very specific personality IMHO ). I don't think 10-20-30% differences could be explained by this small portion. For most men gaining economic advantage _is_ about getting a good job, and that's the only option.

I think you misunderstand me. I'm not saying that you shouldn't have any responsibilities, but I'm saying that there should be a balance. In my country an average 16 year old's schedule only consists of "responsibilities" ( I would say that a responsibility can only be something that you choose, and not force into, so involuntary schooling can't be one, but anyway... ), and has almost 0 own time. I think the balance would be better at 50-50: 6 hours of school ( with homework + commuting )...

What I mean is not that school makes slackers, but school makes people believe that they are slackers, because they never had the chance to experience that they can perform without external pressure. Some people do need pressure to do things, but many people don't. I don't. I mean even if I feel pressure, that's coming from within, and not because my parents/peers would disapprove if I get a C.

But I generally agree with you, school makes people accept that they can't change their life, they need to be slaves/pressured into working ( otherwise they would slack off ).

Also, I would not say that accepting what is forced upon you is discipline. The most disciplined people I know discipline themselves without being force, and that's not something that you can learn in school.

It saddens me to death to hear words like: "To not stick to a schedule/routine once I am solo" from hyper-motivated people. It makes me hopeful to see that you're self-aware enough to mention other people's optinion as a fear factor.

This kind of social conditioning from the school system / society combined with never letting people do what they really want because they have "responsibilities" from the age of 5 is what keeps everyone in check... Go to uni ( no you can't take a year off ), go to work ( why take a year off? You are a slacker... ) etc. ( not to mention that you have no other option than to endure school until you're 18 with no saying what you want to do, and making it almost impossible to do shortcuts in that, even if you're capable ).

My opinion: people are usually want to do things. The school system makes you believe that the only reason people work on things is because they are forced to do is pure bull. People who still have these creative feelings at 29, after going trough all of these things are hyper self-motivated individuals, who don't need any external force to do things ( usually, of course there might be exceptions ).

Yes, after you quit your job you might slack off for a while, and you won't be productive. That might be because your mind needs it, or you might have thoughts in your mind ( because of the fears you've listed ), that block your creative process.

I had similar issues, but I've told myself that I'm not going to do anything but play video games for two weeks. After day 3 I didn't do any playing, and went trough 3 weeks of robotics lessons in two days without forcing myself.

The question of routine: I know this is not a popular opinion, but I think you don't necessarily need a routine, you will just do it, because you want it. Believe in yourself, what I mean is believe what you think of yourself, and try not to let these pressures in, which makes you believe that the slacker is in you. It is not in you.

You have 5 years of savings. Try it for a year! I mean, maybe you become homeless when you're 60 because of this decision ( worst case ). What do you want to be, a 60 year old homeless who made a gut decision, and it didn't work out, or a 60 year old man who never followed his heart?

I don't think it uses GPS for that. You can match two partially overlapping images. From the movement of the feature points in the overlapping areas you can calculate your camera orientation, and thus the 3d point cloud of feature points ( or something close to this ). I think it is called structure from movement, the readme links a paper, maybe it's worth reading for you.

I never quite understood this. I'm from eastern EU, I don't consider my country "poor", but people who are on the bottom of the economic ladder do not eat beef here ( cheap beef is ~4usd/lbs, chicken thighs are 1.5usd/lbs ). Maybe it's just my ignorance, but for me this sounds equally ridiculous to someone who expresses his concerns about how poor people could afford lobsters if the price goes any higher. Pure meat is expensive, and it's a luxury, not a necessity.

The prices of meats are roughly equal to the US and making 20k$/yr makes you rich here, money won't be a limiting factor when it comes to food. Avg. salary in Missisipi is 40k$/yr, and that's the lowest one.

Of course you can't eat out in the nicest places every day from that salary. This is what constitutes being poor in the US ( not being able to do that )? You can always cook at home, and it's very cheap, is the price of the food really a big weight for people in the US ( let's say the bottom 40% )?

Maybe being poor is just being poor compared to others in your area, and it's mostly a mental thing. I lived on 250usd/month and life was good. Went to the farmers market, cooked my own food, I felt spoiled by the food choices I could make. I can make amazing food from various intestines, the taste is amazing, cheap as hell, and it's the best quality protein you can get your hands on for example.

I've read the book / finished the course. What this course doesn't teach you: getting sensor data, figuring out the environment ( this part is called mapping ) from your sensor input ( for ex. locating feature points / getting 3d position of these points from a stereo camera ), locating your own position from the sensor data. In short it doesn't teaches you SLAM ( simultaneous localization and mapping ), which is a good thing, because that is a very big subject.

What it teaches you:

- basics of robotics ( movement freedom, a little bit of topology )

- math necessary for robotics ( describing rotation and displacement in a single matrix, representation of rotations around a point, representation of forces on a body, solving differential equations given these things )

- robot kinematics: what will be the end position if my joint angles are x ( forward kinematics ), what should the joint angles be if my end position is x ( inverse kinematics )

- robot dynamics: same thing like kinematics, but positions => forces/torques. I think this is the hardest part of the whole subject. Although these problems can be solved in a close form, it's not practical, and you'll need some physics knowledge to be able to comprehend everything. Nothing really fancy, it's just needs more time if you physics is not up to this level.

- control: controlling those robots with motors. Describes feedback / feedforward control. In short: if you have a good enough model, then it's not that hard to control a robot, since you only have to control the 'difference' between your model and reality.

- Path planning with obstacles

- Generating control for paths ( your robot has physical constraints, for ex. it takes time to accelerate. You have to take those things into considerations )

- How to make your robot follow a path / how to make paths with physical constraints ( for ex. a car can not go sideways )

- Grasping

I'd say the book is pretty awesome, it's between the line of academic-too high level, and in a good way. You won't be a pro after reading it, since almost every problem gets harder in reality, but you'll get a good enough understanding which will make diving into a subject easy. Lot of excersizes.

Also, it is very readable, I haven't lost myself in any of the parts. Another good thing I've found that it's easy to just skim trough the book, and have general understanding. The youtube videos help a lot with that, I'll suggest you watch them before/after reading a chapter.

One more thing to note: you've called the guy "pro-authoritarian/pseudo-monarchist". Is this how he describes himself ( I guess no )? I grew up in a country with strong far-right culture. Nazis are calling themselves nazis.

The taboo is that differences between groups of people could be caused by something else than systematic oppression ( for ex.: biology/genetics, or the culture of that particular group ).

Sorry to be that guy but this kind of "elitism" seriously bothers me. I've seen this thing in almost all of the fields related to CS like "you have to spend 16 hours a day for 10 years to understand assembly" when I know a guy who became a malware expert in 4 years ( winning world class tournaments with his team ). This thing is very discouraging, and it is false. You stated a problem which is hard to solve, but 99% of problems are not like this. Like: - tell what kind of mineral deficiency a plant has? - what kind of bug do you see? - what kind of plant do you see? - is this thing broken ( MRI or X ray )? - what kind of musical notes are in a waveform?

See how far they get. A talented guy can solve these within one year.

I've been thinking about BSFL for aquaponics and there is one problem: warm blooded animal feces should never get into the water. If it could then you wouldn't need fish btw. I don't know how many E. coli bacteria would survive the BSFLs. I guess this could work for your home, but I would not risk that. Of course you can test the water, but no one did that yet as far as I know.

To be honest: It is probably a mix of the societal pressure from feminists, and you are right capitalism too. The hard thing is that this is not hard science, no one can know the real ratio of the two. For me it seems you're stating this like every societal changes root was better productivity ( communism, French revolution ? ).

The idea that women can thrive in law, medicine and hard sciences but they can't master CSS is laughable. I don't see women thrive in math, physics, engineering science, but I might be wrong. Biology is a good counter example though.

To be honest I think it is perfectly possible that you are right in everything! But I'm also sure that there is no human being on this planet who could say that he understands this problem 100% while being fully rational, and not let the emotions punch trough here and there.

I was only talking about a possible statistical difference, which might be that significant. A quick search lead to a paper[1] which says the average is ~110, which is not insignificant. In my perception the 'left' side states that there is no other factor than bias against women ( or I haven't seen any other argument ).
