My Raspberry Pi 4 has been used to run both a Jitsi and Trackmania server over the years. I never considered using the SD card since it can boot and run from a USB 3 flash drive. Later on, I picked up an Argon One case to add a SATA SSD.

Thankfully, modern Rockchip SBCs tend to come with NVMe slots.

Played around with it a bit this morning. It ships as an AppImage and the launcher opened a browser that allowed me to create an account and bounced me back to the launcher to log into RuneScape.

Anyone in their late 30s or early 40s should be grateful. We got to be stupid teenagers on the internet without any of it going on our permanent record.

A couple of years back I was trying to search a project's Discord for help after they noped their forums. It was a bad enough experience that I set up a forum on my website that evening. I use it as a public version of Google Docs for issues I run across.

I see a 1-2K requests from the Perplexity and ChatGPT-User user agents in the logs every day, so maybe it's helping out a couple of people.

What's been amusing is the number of times I've been contacted on social media, Discord, email, YouTube, and even Steam asking for help / clarification on a post I made in the forums.

I hope that's the case. Seeing Steam Controller reservations pushed into 2027 tempers my optimism.

I was expecting $1200 for the base model, so $1,049 without a controller is nice to see.

I compiled it on Debian 13 and it works with XFCE4. Granted, things are a bit squirrely until you disable the compositor. No luck getting it to play nicely with LightDM so I ended up launching it from a TTY. This was on an AMD mini PC I had lying around the studio.

I've resorted to lowering the quality of my recordings because of this. People are fantastically bad at discerning AI from properly produced audio. So now I leave in a couple of breaths and a little environmental noise to tap the brakes on the "AI slop" comments. Thing is, it would be trivial to add those to an AI narration.

I'm still a bit perturbed that shortly after acquiring Psyonix, Epic killed off the native Linux client and pulled Rocket League from Steam. We had a great little community that got together on Saturday nights to play it.

They are powerful little devices. I used a Pi Zero 2 with an ethernet adapter to host an x86 TrackMania² server using BOX64 and it never had a problem. Only swapped it out recently because I needed the Zero 2 for another project.

These projects are really neat. Last week, I was able to build (and play) the Xbox 360 release of Sonic Unleashed on a couple of ARM SBCs using Sonic Unleashed Recomp.

Is there anything (technically) preventing SBC manufacturers adding SODIMM slots?

I was expecting the Milk V Titan to avoid this memory nonsense since it has two unpopulated DDR4 slots, but it has fallen off the radar like several other SBCs.

If I could smash a button and get a 1:1 copy of my existing site, I’d do it in a heartbeat. I don’t see that happening just yet due to the integrated forum software and its own plugins.

With Cloudflare behind it, hopefully plugin vendors will start paying attention.

I exhausted my teenage savings to buy the Voodoo 1 due to the Linux support. Granted, I was running Red Hat at the time so the installation consisted of installing what, two RPMs? Played a lot of Q3 and Unreal on that card.

I set up a forum when I started my site for Linux content creation. Discord had become a black hole for technical know-how on a scale IRC could never dream of, and finding answers to common questions was nigh impossible since the technology has changed and the modern way to solve problem X was never asked in a forum and never indexed by a search engine. Granted, Reddit provided a bit of a stopgap over the last decade, but the solutions in the comments these days are more often than not a confidently incorrect copy-pasta from GPT.

I use Discord for chat and voice calls since that is what I expect from a chat app, but the amount of companies that have built their community / knowledge base / support system around Discord is worrying. You know they can just delete that, right?

I'll continue to use Discord for chat until prompted to put my face in the hole :)

Getting Quake Brutalist Jam III running on Linux using Quake from my Steam library took a bit of research.

Edit: Changing /Id1 to /id1 and making the *.pak files lowercase will allowed the MOD to launch correctly on my Debian system using ironwail-0.8.1.

I stick with tech news and the creator space on social media, and while I could very well be doing something fantastically wrong, it is hard for me to find on Bluesky when compared to Mastodon and X.

All these years later, and nothing has replicated what Google Plus accidentally pulled off.

The Orange Pi Nova will use Loongson's 2K3000 SoC and should be available on Amazon. Looking forward to getting one in for review.

I’m more excited about the upcoming support for VST3, but this is still welcome news. It is far easier than getting hardware encoding working with Rockchip SoCs on Linux.

Two years ago I started a niche blog and tech site focused on hardware and software guides for Linux creatives. Even set up a forum because I was fed up with digging through scattered mailing lists and Discord servers for information. I like to think it has helped some people and it gives me a chance to practice writing human-readable documentation.

I tried out FEX on a modern ARM board with a discrete GPU. Really impressed with the performance.

This week we closed the doors on our Linux gaming podcast, which has run continuously for the past 13 years. No fuss, no drama. With the announcement of Steam Machine II (we also covered the original launch), it just seemed like the right time. Proton has evolved to the point where most things work out of the box. Few people are bothering with native support, and it’s become difficult to find new things to cover.

It really feels like everything is lined up for the year of Linux in the living room, and it’s great to see.
