I followed your link and it said the reason the picture of Lenna (from a 1972 edition of Playboy) became significant was for its first use in 1973 in an academic conference paper on image processing.

Yet it also states that Woody Allen also used the image in the film Sleepers in the same year.

Woody Allen hardly got the idea from reading academic conference literature.

Makes me think that the image must have made an enormous impact on its release in 1972. Makes you wonder what was cropped, although her face is very nice

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that Merlin Mann got the name for his site '43 folders' from David Allen's 'Getting things done' book. I have been trying to implement GTD techniques for some time. The 43 folder idea appealed to me hugely at first, on a first reading of that book it was the single most seductive technique. I am still using GTD but I've dumped the 43 folders. At the same time I have come to see the value of strategies in the book that at first reading didn't seem all the helpful. The reason I dumped the 43 folders is that I don't think it's suitable for personal organisation. The problem was that with a folder (for every day in the current month = 31) and one for every month (12), the daily folders were mostly empty. This meant that there wasn't an incentive to check them every day and then you end up forgetting to do it and then you miss stuff. The technique might work well for a business though. Now I just store references to 'incubating' items in my phone calendar (which is synced with my google calendar). Sorry for going off on a tangent.

I can relate relate to the thickness of a hair but I can't relate to the size of a red blood cell so... If Mr Bohr ia an average sized 1.8 metres tall and is only a little smaller than the diameter of the hair after the first shrinkage that means that after the second shrinkage where he's 100 nm tall that the hair is about 1000 times wider than that. I calculate it would take him a good 20 minutes to walk past the end of the hair and in his world this chip is about the size of a pool table

I know I shouldn't query downvotes but can the downvoter(s) explain how this will address the problem he outlined (ie schools teaching people how to use MS Office rather than teaching computer science)

If pretty much every home has a PC, if the schools teaching ICT have computers then how is this going to make people 'learn computers' better? Would kids be more turned on by this than by, say, developing apps for android phones?
