The summary paragraph of the cloudfare post demonstrates an important propaganda technique - build an artificial similarity to something that actually does not compare very well with to irritate the reader and to attach the properties of your product / thing you are advertising to something completely different:

Isn't it a bit strange that a small organization of non computer scientists produce something that was painfully missing for at least 50 years? The headline is wrong and not very clever for such a project.

The project was able to get a CA to sign their keys, this is what happened. Using the word "trust" is simply wrong and might be interpreted as a too simple kind of propaganda after we learned a lot about the untrustable nature of a hierarchical certification infrastructure.

Another, even bigger trust-breaking elephant in the room is the fact that this project is USA based - as long as US government and agencies are insisting on practices we know from authoritarian and anti-democratic states like e.g. China or Saudi-Arabia there is no way any US based project can use the word "trust" for their product description - it might be recognized as a simple lie by informed people.

Questions to the project leaders:

Free Education is the primary attribute of a free and cultivated society. If you are living in a primitive country with no free (+higher) education, all available resources should be focused on reaching this goal as the most important evolutionary step.

Many underdeveloped societies and failed states can be identified by looking at the education situation. Sorry, you missed the topic here - it is about surveillance and control and abuse of powers. Nice try to put it "fear of technology" - too obvious and simplistic.

There are some arguments here that go like "oh, how wrong and stupid people are" - but you have to turn it around to understand the situation. These young people are living in a modern surveillance society and they are learning their whole life that surveillance is normal - of course they adapt to their environment.

The "immature" mindset they develop is of course a mirror of the deep misantropic, paranoid and life-disrespecting mindset produced by the Leaders of Your Society (TM), that serves only the war industry, but creates more and more distrust, chaos and destruction everywhere on this planet - for some this might be a welcomed result.

As a hacker news reader you should know that this is extremely simple to disable / uninstall. Ubuntu is ok for a desktop, because you will find a lot of software ready to be installed on Ubuntu without having to dig into details of software packaging / compilation etc. This is especially true for all kinds of media software.

Linux is totally ok for a desktop, I would say much better than anything else! You have several desktop environments you can choose from and you can customize it to make it work exactly like you want it to. Once everything setup to your liking, the configuration can be easily copied to any other system because it is just files in your $HOME folder.

If you are a Hacker, you will be overwhelmed by the great amount of development tools that are much easier to handle than on any other system.

There are very few reasons nowadays not to use Linux.

You will need a lot of time to evaluate DAM solutions, but I recommend putting this quite on top of your list of candidates.

Also one special consideration, none of the tools I checked, no picture gallery and no web service that hosts pictures offers this simple but very important feature:

* picture approval workflow: please allow to upload pictures, show input fields for email(s) of person(s) visible on the picture and send them a link to a page where they can allow to publish the picture. This could be a (customizable) form with some specific text or some more details, however the user should be able to simply agree publishing the picture. Save the user agreement status in the datastore.

Every software / web service allowing to publish pictures online should have such a feature - the fact that this is not available anywhere shows that we are still in the very beginnings of the internets. One day, certainly, humans will laugh about the "non-privacy-by-default"-internetz of the early days...
