Hey, I work at Fly, too. We have a built-in Netlify integration... If you configure your domain with Fly, you can use it as a custom domain for a Netlify, but also serve any other content on arbitrary sub paths. I definitely do not want to have to verify my account by logging into facebook... and I also dont see how this is much different than, say, meetup.com + social media.

I just moved from California to Tennessee and only recently got to experience fireflies for the first time in my life. They're incredible :) I don't see them in the city, but that doesnt surprise me... there are tons once you leave downtown, though.
No, he really didnt... (sorry, this article kind of makes a few ok points, but it fails miserably at giving a bunch of credit to Trump on something that shouldn't be given to him. Feels very clickbaity).
Definitely experienced it in my first few years in tech... I'd made quite a career leap and I honestly _did_ feel like a fraud. But I'm here now and I'm happy and I know where I fit into the mix and I no longer feel like a fraud.. I feel like someone who is growing with my role and where I fit in the community.
This did resonate, though (reminds me of the buzz words in mental health that gain popularity every year or so)

Doesn't surprise me... Utah has a pretty solid tech community. I'm indifferent on the Snapchat stuff.. not a user.. but I think it's a no-brainer for a company like this to head out there.
I generally agree except re: screentime... I think managed screentime without overbearing expectations from the parents is way better than obsessing over the time spent. I worked with kids for 10+ years pre tech and the kids who had strict "no tv" guidelines were generally _obsessed_ with tv, whereas the kids who had parents with a more relaxed approach were pretty indifferent to tv.. Anecdotes, sure, and some kids had zero tv and were incredible kids, and vice versa... but this is just my observation over many years.
tbh, I don't disagree with you here. RethinkDB invested in our open source community more than marketing.. it's arguably part of why we didn't succeed as a business.
Yes it did... MG being our fearless leader has been everything :) Working with the interim leadership team was a dream...

Not surprised at all. I wish more people would emphasize at least _working_ on social skills or real-world problem solving. We would all benefit from this.

Slava mentioned in his blog post that he would be writing some lessons learned over the upcoming months. The fact that this is an open source project that should continue to live on helps with the reception, too. It's sad news to see the company shut down, but it's positive news to know that we can still keep the project alive.

I, personally, think people realize that tech companies are more than just the technology (obviously that is important, but it's not like the tech just appears one day). They are about the people who built it, the struggles and the triumphs and everything in between. It's really an interesting world to be part of and there is something for everyone to learn. I really love reading (and hearing) stuff like this! Having made a similar career shift as JL, I really admire her :)I read the essay that PG wrote about her earlier this month almost daily because it reminds me what I'm doing here, too :)

Definitely not spam. I always hear people ask who is using RethinkDB in production, so just thought I'd help answer that here. I get where you're coming from, though :)
Hello :) I work on the community team at RethinkDB and we're working with PubNub to host a meetup here in the bay area where we'll do a live demo and presentation of this blog post. We record all the talks, too, so hopefully we'll get this going sometime soon. Definitely understand where you're coming from though.
Not really... just depends on what group you're around.
1. Makes communication (especially when employees work remotely) very simple. Great to integrate things like GitHub and Twitter to keep track of updates.
2. Channels, integrations, also integrating with other teams (I'm part of a Slack channel with a company we're collaborating with and it makes it a lot easier to work on things rather than Skype or email).
3. Word-of-mouth, free
4. Too many channels, can turn into a "Facebook" vibe after a while (once you get "fun" channels that aren't work related). I had to "leave" a bunch of channels today and it's quite controversial to "leave" small channels on a small team... But the noise!
