Indeed they do, but out of convenience, not necessity. And I get it - I much prefer driving if the distance is more than say 7km or when it's raining or really cold or really hot.

That being said I estimate that in Europe people who genuinely need a car in their day-to-day lives are closer to 40-45% of all commuters. It was noticeable in the first days of the Hormuz Strait crisis, when the government fuel subsidies didn't kick in yet.

60tps in Chrome here - 14" MBP M4. Safari loads 3% of the model and then stops - repeatedly.

Basically zero using a 7700S in Chrome on Ubuntu though. Must be not working at all, as the performance difference can't be that large.

Driving isn't nearly as important in Europe though.

In absolute numbers the gap is considerably wider due to differences in salaries. And all that while cars and fuel are significantly cheaper in the US.

In the co-working space I rent there are around 50 parking spots and half as much bicycle stands. In the warm period between the solstices the latter is packed and I have trouble finding a stand.

I started cycling mostly because they removed the free gravel parking area not counted in the usual spots, but I've found I don't miss driving as much as I thought I would.

Assuming most of the weight of that ring is the battery, it appears to be storing around 0.5Wh, so two years of operation should amount to approximately 30uW of power.

It should be possible to squeeze this much from a 0.5mm2 amorphous cell in direct sunlight. Considering the ring is 6.6mm wide at the widest point, they could get orders of magnitude more power even in poor lighting conditions, by just wrapping a thin-film solar panel around the ring.

They're tiny, they're light and even though woefully inefficient, they should do the trick.

Indeed. This light is advertised as having a:

-2600mAh battery (9Wh)

-500 lumen light intensity

-5W LED

-4h battery life at constant illumination setting and this is the shortest time listed.

I now know that the battery is much smaller (6Wh) and 500lm is believable for a 5W LED but it's most certainly not this bright at any appreciable duty cycle. During those 4h it has to be pulling 1.5W at most.

It's funny how most of those parameters are not false per se, but at the same time create a false image of the device's capabilities.

The article itself explained that it was much easier to classify text as human or LLM generated than to have "human" as just a category along with all the different LLMs as it's likely the LLMs are distilled from each other, creating a unique footprint.

If a signal is weak, it might not even appear in every sentence, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. For instance, I don't recall ever consciously using an em dash, but you'll probably need an entire paragraph to find one in LLM-generated text.

My own sense of whether text is generated is partially based on its sheer length - humans typically don't bother writing so much.

The other day my bicycle light gave out, so I took it apart - was not the most expensive option, but also not the cheapest.

It was advertised as having a 2600mAh battery, but when I opened it up, inside there was a 1700mAh cell. Also no sign of purported weatherproofing, as the lens was not even glued in.

I have a 2000mAh cell in the same form factor (approximately 500Wh/l, so believable) on its way from China, which makes me wonder how did they come up with that 2600mAh figure.

Unfortunately certain choices make you fit a certain profile.

Case in point: police in my region started cracking down on street racing. Original intention was to deal the obvious danger and noise pollution, but it so happened that after each round of checks they would find at least one DUI, suspended license or even a case of drug possession. Naturally they continued, as street racing is somewhat difficult to prove, but the other mentioned offences are much less ambiguous.

Unsurprisingly people who disregard the law don't just settle on a narrow range of offences.

I'm hearing someone gunning it through a neighboring road as I type this comment and I will be hearing such noise all night, because some people just can't help but make noise.

The other day I even saw a guy in a car with a modified exhaust and driver side window rolled down - apparently so that he would better hear the noise he's making. Considering the volume that had to have a negative effect on his hearing.

I don't understand and I will not understand.

Truly, is that Rust's fault that sloppers are targeting it?

Personally I'm becoming increasingly disillusioned with current LLMs' capabilities. All those recent high profile "rewrites" turned out to be transliterations to unsafe Rust.

I could rewrite anything in unsafe Rust like right now, despite being a novice in the language.

No, it's seeking to ban presenting content at a faster rate than a person can meaningfully digest.

There's a limit to that rate over which the platform doesn't become "too good", it just becomes worse, as it's showing too much too fast and breaking attention.

Hell, I did that in a previous project.

This is one of those things which would work beautifully if:

-Everyone's creep speed was the same.

-No one figured it would be more beneficial for them slip into that gap.

To be honest until today I thought Kafka was the popular go-to Redis replacement, as almost none of my employers used Redis for its original, intended purpose, namely being an in-memory key-value store. What they really wanted was RabbitMQ.

I live at 51°N and apartments in my building that face the south largely have AC. I've seen a lot of AC company vans in my neighborhood lately, so I guess many people pulled that trigger this year.

Personally I went to the mountains as it's a 2h drive and naturally cool, moist air beats AC every time.

The people who refuse to install it and make up the majority of deaths are simply old - older than the average life expectancy in the US - and thus typically pinching pennies - especially that for the vast majority of their lives it wasn't necessary.

My father had AC installed a several years ago due to his health and it was probably working overtime this season.

My mother lives in a commie block that is well insulated and surrounded by green spaces, so the heatwave didn't affect her nearly as much.

My college friend discovered his heat pump is actually reversible, so now instead of heated, they have cooled floors. Unfortunately the device wasn't smart enough to on one hand use the heat to heat up tap water and the cold to cool the surroundings, but I guess you can't have everything.
