I don’t think all of them. I believe data center are a net negative for the residents in the area. I live in South Texas and the county here really gave it their all to get Space X down here. It has become a big employer in this area. There’s a few locals I know that work there as HVAC or welding. The higher skilled jobs move in people from outside here, but they contribute to the local economy by shopping, entertainment, eating, and taxes.

The last 20 years because of social media. The algorithmic echo chambers that people have created with their feeds has increased the divide.

Nostalgia more than anything. At the time a factory job could buy you a home out of high school, have a wife that stays home and takes care of the children. The factory job itself is a red herring. What people actually want is a post WW2 baby booming economy.

China wants to be number one and they have a good chance of doing it. Every nation’s leaders and people want that. It affords luxury and influence. The US understandably doesn’t want to lose their spot. It also helps making this an issue to give it a sense of urgency so things can get done — be it policy or innovation. There’s some game theory in there — e.g Prisoners Dilemma. Treating them as the enemy won’t lead to the optimal result, but if the US doesn’t and they do, it will lead to the worst result for the US. History is not filled with nations singing Kumbaya. I wish it was.

Everyone is pushing trade school and blue collar work. You think their wages are going to increase with new supply? No. I feel like the powers that be said “learn to code” to increase supply. Now it’s “learn to weld” and once the supply increases they’ll bust their unions.

It’s not so much the people or the land, but rather what they can build. It’s the whole essence of the article. Not sure how far behind the West would fall if TSMC was controlled by the CCP. 5 years? 10?

I see Russia not caring, but to say China doesn’t care in the slightest doesn’t make sense. Especially with a company at that scale. There wouldn’t be a push to the Red Book if that was the case.

If you read this thread you’ll see that it’s pretty divided. I for one don’t care that it’s gone and even welcome the ban. I dislike that China has a firewall for American companies, but will gladly enter our market.

In a way you have to hand it to China for this master play. Globalization really complicates economies. China became the world’s factory because it produced products for a fraction of the cost, but it didn’t let the West in to provide services and products built by white collar workers into their economy. It copied and made sure that the services and products were produced by Chinese budding middle class workers. Now you can argue they’re on even footing with the West. I agree with you. They caught up and the handicap should be removed. They want their cake and to eat it too.

Meta, maybe Zuck specifically, always seemed liked a pandering company trying to follow the social meta. VR gets popular, Meta goes all in. Twitter “dies”, Meta swoops in with Threads. Snapchat stories, FB stories. TikTok, FB shorts. Musk getting close to Trump, Zuck trying to get close. People say he’s a robot? Hey, he now has a chain, does jujitsu, and has a broccoli haircut. Puts Dana White on the board and does JRE. Now he’s removing fact checking and DEI as the left is losing power. It’s like Zuck just wants to be recognized as a cool kid in the group, but is clearly trying too hard. The last cool thing FB did was marketplace and then all the way back to timeline feature.

The images with the forecast don’t look like any forecasts I was watching. They predicted pretty well even on July 1st. The majority of models predicted it would go up like it did. The trend between EPS, GEFS, UKMET, and CMC all had it going up. Not saying an AI LLM won’t help, but this seems a little disingenuous.

I think the biggest factor that decides where you live is work. You move where the work is, that’s how you survive. You don’t have to use a hyperbole like living on 40 acres. There’s many cities and towns that have social events but aren’t as crammed as SF or NY.

I think the crux of the issue is our brains looking to be occupied with easily digestible content. I removed Facebook a while ago but then replaced it with Reddit and X. I quickly removed them, but then it was like my brain was looking for something similar and I was on Neighbors and Telegram groups for a while. So I removed those too, but now I'm on HN more. I tell myself I would rather be working, and that working is more beneficial to me in the long run, but for some reason, it quickly opens a tab to HN when I'm stuck or tired. Rewiring my brain is harder than I imagined.

Yeah, but they created a moat and became sticky. Netflix knew they were a middleman too so they started to produce their own content years before the streaming wars. I worked for one near the border that bought American industrial parts and sold it to Mexican factories. I helped build their quoting and ERP software, but the boss wanted to build a platform for him and his competition to try to become sticky and build a moat. Middlemen should always be finding ways to stay in the process.

I'd argue government is just the same. If you look at who holds office right now, it's predominantly the older generation [0]. They achieved that by becoming career politicians. Deng Xiaoping introduced capitalism which lifted generations of people out of poverty [1]. It has a good track record of doing that. The rich companies lobby the government to make competition for the little guy impossible and solidifying their concentration of power -- crony capitalism. I do think there should be a push and pull, but both sides are human and power hungry.

I’d agree with you if someone somehow managed to memorize all the problems line by line, but that isn’t the case.

You’ve memorized how to build an array in your language of choice. You’ve memorized the patterns that require an array. You might’ve also picked up some techniques for splicing it.

When I see a master working, be it in woodworking, art, or engineering, everything is second nature. Years of seeing what worked and what doesn’t and they make it look effortlessly — almost like they memorized it all.

By all means, if the problem can be easily solved by DFS, but you want to be creative, try something else. If it was really creative, the interviewers will be sure to talk you up and you’ll beat out the “code monkey” that used DFS. If you invented some new type of search, I’ll look out for your paper on it. If you found a new way to hire and cut candidates only leaving the creative geniuses, I’m all ears.

If there’s content I want to watch, I’ll check each streaming service. I’ll even buy or rent it if I can watch it on demand. If I really want the content that’s not easily accessible then I’ll resort to torrenting. It’s convenience more than anything. Most people I know who are not tech savvy don’t even open the files app on iOS. I doubt they think about downloading a 5hr white noise file.

Proper form is very real. We all share the same anatomy and the levers that are your arms perform the same way. A weight lifter might not arch their back compared to a power lifter when doing a bench press, but each setup is fine. A sumo or conventional deadlift are both fine, but bending your back to lift weight weight vs using your legs is improper. They’re not arbitrary patterns either, they target specific muscles because of the human body’s anatomy. You also don’t just randomly pick a different amount of weight…

Who cares if you use Kafka and Kubernetes. You sacrifice so much man power to do things thinking you’ll have a million users, but then fail like 90% of all other startups. I’ve never once heard of a startup failing because they had trouble scaling their architecture — just their business. We know he lost his job because the CEO valued the perspective of the ex googler, but the ex googler had 5 years on systems that were already large, massive man power, and budgets that dwarf startups. You’ll make any new CEO salivate showing road maps that will handle 1,000,000 concurrent users, but “handle” and road maps to “get to” are different.

You can do mental gymnastics to try to justify this, but at the end of the day you know this is pretty scammy - especially since you can use chatgpt for free.

YT is the greatest media content platform to ever exist. I’ve tried to tell people to cancel Spotify and just rebuild your playlists on YT. The algorithms are just as good. You can also find ALL music on it. When I’m looking for a song that wasn’t popular I can usually find it as one of those slide show videos with the lyrics on it. The only thing I wish it did better was podcasts. If it followed Netflix’s footsteps in producing really good studio quality shows I’d probably cancel Netflix too.

Ford is doing the same with the C pick up truck. I often see Rangers with Mexican license plates around town since I live in south Texas. I think if Ford or Ram can sell $100k pickup trucks in Mexico they would in a heart beat.
