I use a $250 mouse + a $250 mechanical keyboard as the laptop is docked... Pretty sure nothing compares to apples track pads. At the same time sitting hunched over a laptop on a desk is sub optimal too, many do it. Point is for significantly less money a non apple device is most likely gonna get the job done and not be a disaster hardware wise. Is the Trackpad really worth $2,000?

Christchurch in NZ is hooked up with Libby and a video service just recently. It's pretty great having a solid physical library with books for the toddler/baby and the digital for me. (though apparently I'm supposed to actually read physical paper books to encourage the youngins to read as well). As a student I'd be in the school library all the time, now as an adult with kids having the public library is amazing, so glad I didn't need to buy the 60+ books we've been through so far (they wouldn't be exposed to books..)

The other thing you get with GCloud is multiple datacenters around the planet. Assuming Snap are going after the 2billion+ people not in America, this seems like an advantage to use someone else's gear. 2billion seems high, maybe it's the maximum negotiated on paper for the deal as opposed to the guaranteed?

To run the whole system need multiple VMs. It's not enough to just run the app container anymore. There are a bunch of support containers and if you want to experiment with failure then there are even more VMs & containers to run. sure we could just dump $1,000 into a cloud provider for a couple months usage, for me I'd rather put that $1,000 into my laptop (i7 3.8GHz, 64GB RAM, 2x SSD, 1x2TB HDD) and be able to experiment at my leisure. Plus it's quicker to iterate if the experiment is running all the time, cloud is expensive to run stuff that doesn't generate income.

The thing I've learnt with Docker is that all the other Prod issues still exist. Docker at its core only solves the executable part or distribution of the process to run. Still need to figure out, network, storage, monitoring, backups, discovery, etc...

What starts out as a single host can quickly quadruple once all the other considerations are taken into account and wanting a scalable, reliable and available system.

This is what I'm looking forward to with AI. With humans we tend to If This Than That and be methodical. AI on the other hand given enough processing power does everything at once and is omnipresent. Movies like iRobot kind of point to this, still in that movie there was a linear progression on the part of the AI side.

The biggest issue with this is when contractor x bids $1m to get in the door and then says oh yeah, we need an extra $5m to do it properly since we had more meetings and scope has changed.

None of that is able to be specced up front because people are involved that have "connections" and "back rubbing"...

It's not to say that the extra scope and cost of $5m is worthless, just simply bidding for work and coming in the cheapest is not an accurate view of the work once the project is finished. This is where 18F should be creating value because they are on the Gov't side as were.

Indeed - I've long since given up on security answers/questions as being secure. Kind of defeats the purpose of unique passwords if all the answers are common knowledge... Had to laugh at one instance where I actually had to read out the 30 character secret answer on one support phone call :P

Funnily tonight I've spent about 3hrs going through and marking everything "only me" which leaves everyone that was tagged or has commented on it with access. Being an AUstralian 4G consumer, not using a data usage monitoring app is a recipe for "having a bad day".

This is a customer problem, govt needs to ignore people being stupid. If a customer buys 200mb of data and doesn't know what/how much that is the customer needs to educate themselves. The telcos here even provide usage meters in their apps and update within minutes most of the time. Even in Vietnam I can send a txt to 888 with the phrase "data" and it tells me how much data is left.

Niantic need to be completely dismissive of this whole data usage situation...

This... In Vietnam seeing some (as a 30yr old native English speaker) of the "correct" answers to VN made English homework or tests is interesting to say the least. The questions are so awkward, pretty sure the only reason the students able to deduce the answer is because they have been taught vn-English so it makes sense to them ;)

As someone who likes to fundamentally understand processes and underlying reasons. It does take some practise though to get at the heart of the matter and propose alternative solutions that work without being abrupt or like "c'mon, etc?". People higher up tend to be rather attached to their solutions even though after chatting for a bit it becomes increasingly obvious a different approach would get them what they want and often reduce human error factors and/or make effeicent :)

I use Android and Google Maps just works, has stars and is awesome. Finds everything when you search for it and just works. Plus browser to device or device to browser via stars is great. There are some annoying things, however the big things work well.

Apple Maps is a pile of junk :/
