not entirely sure what your point is, but i think you are saying that art is just a commodity we use for cheap entertainment so it's ok for computers to do the same?

in the context of what i was saying the definition of what is art can be summed up as anything made by humans. i have no problem when its used in memes and being open sourced etc.. the issue i have is when a human invests real time into it and then its taken and regurgitated without their permission. do you see that distinction?

imagine being a photographer that takes decades to perfect their craft. sure another student can study and mimic your style. but it's still different than some computer model "ingesting" vast amount of photos and vomiting something similar for $5.99 in aws cpu cost so that some prompt jockey can call themselves an AI artist and make money off of other peoples talent.

i get that this is cynical and does not encompass all ai art, but why not let computers develop their own style wihout ingesting human art? that's when it would actually be AI art

it blew my mind when i logged into dropbox that sharing my data with third party "vetted" AI companies was enabled by default.

i just wrote a WTF email to their support, but most likely i will be discontinuing my account. can't imagine what they can possibly say that will make this OK

oh wow.. refactoring is an art form. just because your code "works" doesn't mean you have to leave it alone. your working code will likely be copied into 5 other projects and will not scale well.

ideally you're investing into creating shareable code libraries and into infrastructure that makes the process of maintaining/referencing shared components easy enough for engineers to want to dedicate their precious sprint time to it.

You are reducing employee mistreatment to a removed from reality statistic. As if staying close to not breaking the law is some kind of Bible scripture that makes it all ok. Lots of horrible things were legal in history and are legal today. Just because a company wants to “survive” doesn’t mean we can’t point out the things that are wrong and push for change. If you want to be cynical why not go the other way and say who cares if Amazon survives. Let someone else fill in that role that will prioritize their people. you're commenting on a study with what sounds like an opinion that feels right to you. maybe it's not just about social media vs "positive" activities. some of it may be related to screen addiction and inability to focus due to externals stimuli. any unhealthy habit could have a configuration where its not as unhealthy to some people, but it doesn't mean the study is "confusing people"

while i hate FB so much for their shitty practices I keep it because i find it very valuable to see what's going on with distant family and friends and to share my photos to keep my personal photography hobby going...

for me the trick is that i set my password to random and keep it locked in keepass and never installed the app, never logged in from work computer. so i do only check in 1-2 / week and only briefly. that's enough to catch up on extended circle, local skateboarding groups etc, but not waste too much time on memes. i am also hopeful that without sharing any personal info and installing the app FB does not track too much about me .. maybe just wishful thinking!

in the book Digital Minimalism Cal Newport does devote a chapter to this type of 'Leisure' activity. he makes a case that humans are evolved to interact with physical world and such activity is a lot more satisfying/relaxing than the simulated kind (digital world). its well worth a read and making me re-consider my evenings. Even though i avoid TV i still spend "productive" time on a computer. working on a garden would be an excellent candidate!

it's a shit show. I had "great benefits" at my last job accept when i needed them

1. when something happened and i needed physical therapy it turned out my copay was like 6k so i just DIY my own therapy..

2. when changing jobs i had a month gap, so i bought COBRA and 3 things went wrong.

    a. it cost $1300 for a month of coverage (even with a 2k deductible)

    b. since my last day was before a weekend, they actually covered my only until that same day next month, so i still had a gap of coverage (might be my employer but still sucks people have to be faced with this bs)

    c. when i did go to a routine physical healthcare provider still denied the claim and i was sent a full bill. after hours of calling it turned out they initially rejected it, but then accepted months later and i was left with _*some*_ expenses ?!

this "study" is riddled with issues. only 2 companies studied. i can't imagine how different every place is depending on its culture. how comfortable are employees ? are the teams next to people they don't know? was this measurement amortized over project volumes after the move? are these companies designed with some private areas easily accessible on every floor for teams to discuss / have daily stand ups if needed?

seems one could easily come up with 2 new companies example where the opposite is true given a different design / team layout / project types and so on

the issue I run into (and maybe there is a quick solution) but when I work on a TS React project and want to add a library that does not have Typings definitions, i get in a world of hurt. trying to quickly add my own typings or fix TS errors w/out disabling major compiler functions.. usually spend an hour or two and give up on the library.. is there a good way to deal with this scenario?

storing in UTC is fine as long as your clients are time zone aware and can convert to local and send timestamps with time zone so that the server can convert back to UTC.
