I'd like to thank the creators of ClickHouse as i hope they are reading here. We've been using it since 2019 in a single server setup with billions of rows. No problems at all. And query speeds that seem unreal compared to MySQL and pg.

As we did not want to go into the HA/backup/restore details at that time we created a solution that can be quickly recreated from data in other databases.

Good thing i never bought a Nest device. As with most "Google made" devices the lifespan and their commitment to support a product are abysmal.

Honestly we need to change the way we think about products - especially household products like those Nest was selling. No way can i save money with it if i pay 300$ and it gets killed after 2 or 3 years. And i'm not even talking about the environmental aspects.

It would be really nice to have a browser extension that shows the amount of other reviews every reviewer has in the last n months. Someone with 20+ review can not really be trusted and can be filtered out.

Or even better: If Amazon would spend some of their AI departments time and delete those fake reviews on a daily basis. So tired of them.

Nice first impression. Some issues though: No video chat. That's the main thing i use skype for. Sound goes through my Macs default settings. I can change the microphone to my headset but not the output. If i change the output to headset it will also change this for my music which is annoying.

I like that Taxi companies need to have extra insurance and the cars and drivers are checked on a regular basis. Just like the TÜV (a mandatory checkup every two years for every vehicle) makes sure all vehicles have functioning lights, brakes, proper tires etc.

This ruling only makes sure Uber follows those same rules other transportation businesses follow as well. There is competition in the transportation business here but there is no room for people sidestepping completely sane rules everybody should agree on.

I am in no way affiliated with the taxi business and i like lower fares too. But not at the cost of safety and less checks for cars and drivers.

Once Uber agrees to comply i am happy to use their app and their drivers. I doubt they will be able to operate much cheaper though - i am fine with that.

I live i Germany. And whenever we try to sell cloud-based services to our customers there is this group of people that are not comfortable with Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. They like to keep data in their own racks on their own servers. The standard reply is to call it FUD and talk about all the advantages the cloud has.

It will be a lot harder to win an argument against them now that everybody knows that data which is stored in the U.S. is free bait for the NSA to play with. It's no longer fear, uncertainty and doubt. It's just fear now.

As soon as i read that FB was buying Instagram i quit and deleted my Instagram account. It was too predictable that something like this will happen.

Mark Zuckerberg is in a horrible position. I bet he would love to just build a cool and useful product. Instead he is damned to roll out all these awful money making features. And quick. Not only for his investors but also for the staff that owns FB stock.

How smooth could FB move along if their investors trusted them like they trust Jeff Bezos and his very long-term view.

Wouldn't compression between redis and hiredis make sense as well?

How much load would compression put on a Redis instance that talks to n clients where each client sends/receives medium sized JSON docs. And how much would be gained in terms of faster responses from Redis.

Buy on bad news it says. Every time i see such a huge drop for the FB stock i think to myself: Should i buy now - i never did. And every time i see the next rock bottom i am glad i didn't.

I do believe though that FB has the potential for a lot more revenue just because they own the channel to their gazillion users. They just haven't figured out a good way, yet.

The thief might have just traded those dollars to bitcoins which makes them harder to trace.
