A week to fill a DB and 70 m3x-large is way too expensive to find out how far you can scale. Me and my friend built stacktical (https://www.stacktical.com) so that with very minimal load testing it's possible to understand and share how many concurrent users your current and upcoming application infrastructure can handle. Testers are welcome
I think we should stop falling into the marketing greed of Docker to manage container at large scale. They want to get a grip of the corporate market and catch up with kubernetes at the cost of their containerization quality. Unfortunately with their current strategy they are loosing credibility as a containerization tool AND as the container orchestration tool they try to become. Using it solely as a containerization tool with k8s/ecs for the heavy lifting is the relevant way to go as for today IMO.
Great post. I wish more companies would be equally transparent about their infrastructure details. I think the lack of cost optimization is underrated though.
The problem is as you scale the lack of optimization scales with it. Ultimately a late optimization and migration affect more users, complexity etc..

I share the same feeling (as for the splitting feature alone). I also love the minimalism and the fact that there is no screen estate waste(1 windows takes 100% of the screen, 2 takes 50% each, etc...).
Since I switched to i3 I completely stopped to use tmux. /r/unixporn is full of i3 screenshot and config to learn from i would encourage new users to look at it.
I totally agree that fallback is the way to go. Unfortunately I couldn't get powerline glyphs to work on my archlinux box, lost patience and just grabbed the droid patched fonts. I would say that it adds portability, consistency and makes it easier to have glyphs working straight.
