What's most worrying about this is that Dropbox is injecting itself into processes like NotePad++ and Firefox that have nothing to do with shell extensions.

Either this is lazy coding, or there is some malicious intent to spy.

On Encryption 13 years ago

If I were the NSA, I would run these VPN services.

They provide a perfect honeypot to gather the "illegal" web users or those with something to hide, in one place.

Linode SSD Beta 13 years ago

Sounds promising. SSDs have good potential as a cache for bigger backend spinning disks.

The best cloud security solution is one where you control the encryption keys AND stuff is encrypted on your device BEFORE uploading to the cloud.

We tried SpiderOak but the security was hard for our users. We ended up using Syncdocs which encrypts Google Drive. It lets our team share and use Google Docs normally, but secure folders we need to keep encrypted. They also disclose their AES encryption source.

Loyalty and Layoffs 13 years ago

Not necessarily; few employees are willing to take a pay cut - that is why 5% of staff are laid off, rather than everyone in the company taking a 5% cut.

The latter would probably be more efficient for the company. However many workers would start looking for a better job.
