Many companies have vacation and sick leave the same. You can be sick, but vacation less, or vice-versa. If you're predisposed with a weak immune system and need a lot of sick leave during the year, well, sucks to be you at those companies.
This is the cowards approach. Take the time and rebuttal properly, or don't reply at all. Just because you're "e-popular" on HN doesn't give you a free pass for weak arguments.
1. Has to have a light to indicate recording, or everyone around you will be paranoid. (Most people will still be paranoid, but at least you can say "No red light, it's not recording!").
2. Will probably be very popular as a cyclist camera. Cyclist who just want a decent 720p camera to record cycling activity (evidence against dangerous drivers), but don't want to attach a dorky camera to their head (i.e. GoPro), will like the Google Glass -- assuming it can fix onto cycling glasses. Also, having GPS/Strava/heart-rate/cadence all on your Google Glass will be awesome for cyclist. (and runners)
A password manager. I personally use 1Password. Life before it was painful and insecure.
I read an insightful comment on Reddit regarding yesterday's Russia train station bombings. It went something like "Because of the long lines due to slow security screening, terrorists are opting to target the long lines at airports or train stations instead of targeting the planes."
So, yea, TSA isn't going to fix that unless you have screening before the screening, and then you just have another line.
Are flights between European countries, say Denmark and Finland, as easy as the OP's experience? Or has post-911 NSA influenced the majority of modern civilization into encumbrance?

In all the world, the richest and most sought after cities to live in are those with ocean views.
Very few companies will consider 4-days, but I wish they would consider 5-days at 7 hours.
Working at a startup it's a huge success if I ever have to handle a lot of connections to my app, but today and everyday, I want fast response times on a page load.
Realistically, I doubt many humans can distinguish between 1ms and 100-200ms. response times.
I've wondered, when articles write "teens aren't using Facebook" -- are they referring to young college students (17-19) or are they referring to middle/high schoolers?
Facebook was originally college-only, and high schoolers tend to emulate college students more than the other way around (in fact, I doubt any college student follows high school trends), therefore my guess is what Facebook is actually losing is young college students..? If they're losing high school students.. who cares.
I think 4K will be the minimum necessary to have a real VR experience. I mentioned it in another comment: suspension of disbelief is everything, but currently my eyes focus too keenly on the scanlines and my immersion is ruined. It doesn't help that all my consumer devices have retina-like quality, so I'm used to nearly flawless clarity in my displays. When I'm using the 720p Oculus Rift it just bugs me too much. 1080p will be better, but still not great.
I've tried the Oculus for a weekend. I'm relatively unimpressed until 1080p or higher becomes available. It's currently too low resolution. Blurring and scanlines interfere too significantly with the suspension of disbelief.

Maybe, but the reaction on Twitter and in this thread is proof that a lot of techies have this puritan attitude toward homeless. The blog was being sensational to expose this.
I would like say guaranteed income law (similar to basic income of Alaska) would solve homelessness, but only in cities and towns that are affordable to rent and live in. Even with a guaranteed income the homeless of San Francisco would not be able to afford rent.
Assuming worst-case NSA scenario, even if the images weren't hosted by Google, the NSA would just pull the external images anyway for facial recognition/what not.

The original article explains it well. It's okay to own a car, maybe even one per adult in the household (though I would advocate greater car sharing). The original article's point is using the right tool for the job. In your cases the car was the right tool. For many people, especially city dwellers, you can leave your car at home and ride a bicycle for your daily city commutes. If everyone physically able followed this rule.. We'll, we'd probably look a lot like Sweden or those other uber bike friendly European places.
I like the iOS ecosystem, as well the OS X ecosystem. I like Mac products. I have a Macbook Pro. I do all sorts of hacks on it, because OS X is not locked down. I don't see why I can't do the same on iOS. I don't want to use Android or others.
So uh, I don't really care about the polyphasic stuff. Would this device improve normal sleep? I struggle to find comfortable sleep masks. I suppose it's kind of expensive, although the sleep monitoring stuff is cool.
I'm reminded of the movie MoneyBall. Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt are employed with what outsiders would consider horrible jobs, but each stick with it because they enjoy it.
As an outsider you may think Penny Arcade's offer is bad, but someone, somewhere would love nothing more to work with the people behind that legendary comic and expo, no matter how rough it is.
Edit - I would also like to make an analogy with MMO guilds, particularly World of Warcraft. There are players who spend 4+ hours a night with their guild hardcore raiding (especially after the release of a content patch). These hardcore guilds have very strict enlistments. Unless you're as hardcore as them you're not in. An outsider would think they're insane, but there is no shortage of people applying to these guilds because they enjoy the experience of hardcore raiding. Some of these guilds have a very family-like bond toward each other, so you have to consider community/culture fit.

Comparing a centuries old board game with completely balanced rules, to an infant video game that still has major balance problems (if you looked hard enough), is silly. Chess is as balanced as it gets.
I read this argument a lot, but closed offices work easily with a chat room. We have an IRC channel (and we create separate channels when we need specific group chats). No one feels alone, communication is instant.
It's an everlasting controversial subject. Perfect material for page views and ad revenue.
Something not brought up often: smell.
I don't work in an open office, but I wonder what it smells like. When in closed meetings or an elevator I can keenly smell people, sometimes good (women's fragrance) but most of the time distracting (perfume, odor). I'd hate to be surrounded by distracting smells all the time.
This can be fixed with proper ventilation (and proper hygiene let's hope), but ventilation can be hard to come by in the non-summer months. (without freezing everyone out)
My only problem with Zurb is that ridiculous mascot that represents it. What is that sky-blue creature? Hipster yeti?
