The language model's body of "knowledge" tends to fall off outside of functionality commonly covered in tutorials. Writing a "hello world" program is no problem; proposing a design for (or, worse, an addition to) a large application is hopeless.

Hard disagree. I've used GPT-4 to write full optimizers from papers that were published long after the cutoff date that use concepts that simply didn't exist in the training corpus. Trivial modifications were done after to help with memory usage and whatnot, but more often than not if I provide it the appropriate text from a paper it'll spit something out that more or less works. I have enough knowledge in the field to verify the corectness.

Most recently I used GPT-4 to implement the paper Bayesian Flow Networks, a completely new concept that I recall from the comment section on HN people said "this is way too complicated for people who don't intimately know the field" to make any use of.

I don't mind it when people don't find use with LLMs for their particular problems, but I simply don't run into the vast majority of uselessness that people find, and it really makes me wonder how people are prompting to manage to find such difficulty with them.

You are literally describing the fundamental problem of truth in philosophy and acting as if it's different because a computer is involved at one step in the chain.

Show me one assistant who can promise they are right 100% of the time and I will show you one liar.

Copilot & Copilot Chat cut down my coding time on a brand-new ML optimizer that was released in a paper last week from what would have been 20+ hours into a 4-hour session and I got fancy testing code as a free bonus. If I had coded it by myself and taken the full amount of time it would have taken to figure out which parameter was being sent on which layer for which gradient was currently being processed, I wouldn't have had the energy to write any tests.

I don't understand what people's expectations are of AI that they're being disappointed. You figure out the limitations quickly if you use it on a regular basis, and you just adapt those shortcomings into your mental calculus. I still code plenty by myself in a good old vim session because I don't think copilot would actually be very useful in reducing the amount of time it would take me to code something up, but I don't count that as a "failure" of AI, I view it as knowing when to use a tool and when not to.

It does not. Regular ChatGPT without plugins does not have access to any tools. Throw it a script with some weird outputs and it'll definitely fail, every time. While the script 'evaluation' stuff can be pretty decently impressive, it is not actually executing anything.

After I finished it myself, I ran it through ChatGPT (and Davinci, but that largely failed.) It generated part 1 perfectly, but it was unable to make the jump into the three compartment intersections without significant prompting, and the first couple times it completely lost the uppercase/lowercase distinctions. It was able to generate largely perfect tests from the examples though, and I had it debug itself until it worked. It wasn't amazing code, but it passed its tests and actually thought of some edge cases I hadn't considered when I coded my solution, such as odd length strings.

Yes. Every single serious chess master uses Chessbase as it has the largest database available out there even though the price is pretty obscene. The customer base is more dedicated than most and it's probably the single most important tool a chess pro can get outside of an engine itself.

Edit: It may not be the single largest database, I suspect that honor goes to Chess.com or Lichess, but it is certainly the largest curated one.

Eventually it may be a contributor to a commercialization, but now it makes it a target for research for others. This isn't patenting anything, it's scientists saying 'this is an important bit when it comes to the effects of fasting so let's focus on this.'

What would be scummy would be some pharmaceutical company discovering this, not releasing the information, and trying to develop (or worse, failing to develop) a drug on their own after internal research that was never released to the world.

By your logic would we suddenly lose consciousness/sentience if we gained complete knowledge of our own bodies and brains? What if at a sub-quantum level everything decomposes to a simple turing machine?

Not understanding how conciousness works in our bodies does not directly imply that conciousness cannot emerge in a complex system of fully understood basic components.

I fully admit I could be wrong, and I didn't explain myself adequately re: ETM. ETM has been enabled since Vista, but you can get a full list of all ETS logs very easily (via `logman query -ets`). The question is what's consuming it, and as far as I can tell the basic telemetry settings won't send anything remotely beyond some incredibly basic information.

The biggest takeaway to me here (besides the explanation of the telemetry levels) is that the processes in question are cmd, powershell, bash, etc, and not what you are running in them. Even if you have enhanced telemetry enabled it wouldn't bubble up what you're running underneath the console process as a process name.

I did some reading through the code to understand what was going on here. After a brief read, it appears that most of this telemetry code is only enabled when ETW (Event Tracing for Windows) is enabled.

ETW is explicitly opt-in on windows and is almost exclusively used for debugging, not to mention it requires a kernel mode driver to be loaded.

I have not read all the code, but from a brief overview this tracing behavior and telemetry wouldn't be automatically activated anywhere except on Azure.

The asymmetry between theory and scale has been shrinking on most fronts when it comes to the government. The government certainly has brilliant scientists on its payroll and in the past has been able to shove resources at problems that no other entity has, but these are no longer the days of the Manhattan Project and this isn't the atom bomb. You can't throw money at this problem beyond buying computing power (which the private sector now holds more of than the government does), and it requires incremental advancements in dozens of fields internationally over the course of years, along with huge collaboratively captioned datasets that simply can't be produced by the government without tipping their hand.

Funny running into you here! I'm the 'maintainer' of the Firefox version (it doesn't take much work.) I just got a request to do imperial to metric conversion, which I had to politely decline based on the idea of looking up the density of every ingredient involved; not to mention writing an actual parser for recipies proved to be quite a challenge given the wide diversity of how the recipes are layed out.

For alcohol that may be true, but the ultimate goal of SMART is sobriety. There is another (smaller) branch of REBT drug-based therapy called 'Rational Recovery' that uses naltrexone (an opiate blocker) before drinking to reduce the pleasurable feeling associated with drinking.

I tried it, but it didn't work for me. It certainly makes drinking less pleasurable, but I was using it as a coping mechanism for my anxiety.

I think for some people, that approach might work. Also, if a person solves their underlying psychological problem which led to the need of alcohol for a coping mechanism, I think it might work as well.

I'm probably saddled with anxiety for life, but I've learned healthy coping mechanisms. Besides the taste of a cold beer after mowing the lawn, I don't miss it in the slightest.

For anyone who wants a more evidence-based approach to addiction than 12-step programs, SMART recovery might do the trick for you. It helped me greatly with my alcohol addiction, and it doesn't treat addiction as a forever thing. I've been sober for 6 years or so now, and I haven't needed to attend a meeting since I beat the addiction.

Meetings are free, there are online sessions all the time, and it's just a great community overall.

I can categorically say that is untrue. While not a fan of direct pharmaceutical marketing, the FDA has strict rules about what needs to be in an advertisement. Chiefly, it must address:

* At least one approved use for the drug (the actual medical condition that it has been tested for)

* The generic name

* Nearly every side effect the drug can give you. There are some side-rules on that one.

Barely can be an understatement. My youngest sister is severely autistic and absolutely couldn't survive without a strong support system, both from the state and our family. She lives in a group home with 19 other people in a similar state.

With that said, due to my exposure to autism through my sister, I have seen cases that are far worse than hers. Completely non-verbal people with autism, those who experience panic attacks when they see an unfamiliar person, the list goes on.

We tend to focus on the lighter end of the spectrum, where people can lead functional and fulfilling lives. Most people don't see the other side of the spectrum, where autism is devastating to every single person involved.

It is expensive, but it is accessible. Truvada for PrEP has a program both for insured patients that covers co-pays up to $7,200 per year (I pay zero dollars a year because of this), and a medication assistance program for uninsured patients where after signing up and meeting eligibility requirements (which are basically 'are you at risk of getting HIV' and 'are you not wealthy to the point where you should definitely be able to afford insurance') you receive the medication at zero cost.

This is true of many medications, but Truvada is especially famous for it. As a gay man I have a lot of friends on it, and because of the aforementioned program, only two of the thirty+ pay any co-pay at all, and it's something like 20 bucks for them.

Humans were also unaware of numbers and counting until we discovered/invented them in antiquity. We may be unaware of limitations that we have now, but we seem to be in a unique position in the animal kingdom to be able to overcome those conceptual limitations once a need for those concepts is identified.

I recall a documentary from years ago about training in Indian call centers, and they'd have experts come in to train people in accents on a regular basis. Presumably due to the amount of call center outsourcing that's done in the western world there are more resources available in India than other places when it comes to accent coaching.
