If you are using erlang you should be using pattern matching not regex. Erlang/Elixir are one of the easiest languages to build parsers in with their binary string pattern matching.

That might not be true if you consider that it is dramatically easier to lose $1b of bitcoin by forgetting the key, but there is almost no way you could lose $1b of gold by forgetting the combination or losing the key to the safe.
And if you stored bitcoin for 20 years on a key without moving it, would you really be that confident that after 20years you would still have access to it? That the media you used to store the key on didn’t degrade? That you have the correct password. I can be extremely certain that the gold bars I have now will be exchangeable in the future.
With bitcoin when storing money, there is a much bigger risk of it going to zero when you are storing it.
But that is significantly different from the gas station example. The parent said that the gas stations primary income is selling food not gas.
Ikea primary income is selling furniture. It would be much more interesting if they actually made more money selling food than gas.
Housing prices change. Rent prices change. Here in SoCal I was going to buy a place but the pandemic hit so we decided to rent.
Our rent payment is about half what we would pay if we bought. Just look at the last two places I rented: Rent1: $2500/mo Condo next door: $850k. That’s 4K mortgage and 1k HoA.
Rent2: $4100 Equivalent mortgage: $10k/mo
Doesn’t make sense to buy unless you are speculating on housing prices.
Started looking at Elm this weekend as a possibility for it to compile into other languages (javascript/elixir). Its too bad every release requires most packages to be rewritten. The good news is that releases are getting slower and slower, so you might go a year without any releases (even minor version patches). I guess that counts as LTS.
Elm would be so awesome if they just forked it at 0.19 and said "no more breaking releases". But I doubt that will ever happen.
It reminds me of how last year (and still ongoing) we saw heaps of meditation apps.
It just seemed completely counter intuitive to me (as a Zen practitioner) to introduce something needlessly complicated on probably the simplest (not the easiest) thing you can do in your life.
There is a significant amount of learning involved in focus and meditation, by and large the people reading and buying these want a short cut and do themselves a disservice. Work is part of your life. Trying to have certain hacks to focus to work then pull up an app for more hacks on how read, then a different app for hacks on how to meditate to cast out the stress of work, misses the connection between why you cant focus in the first place. Not being able to read, work, relax are all symptoms of a problem: you are terrified of being bored.
The Pomodoro method seems like a good start, but in my opinion mindfullness should be applied to every part of your life.
Learning to focus on work will help you focus on work. Learning to be mindful will help you with relationships, sex, reading, work and pretty much every part of your life.
My best advice is to get comfortable being bored. Stare at a blank wall for an hour every few days. It will profoundly change your life.
In order for equity to be worth it for employees at a Startup you need to be within the first 10 people and the company needs to be north of the $500,000,000 range.
To illustrate, give the best odds. You join within the first 10 people, get 0.7%, after 6 years of dilution you might be down to ~0.2%.
If a company runs a tender offer with a valuation of $200m, your stock is $400,000. Is that a lot? Well considering you probably make 50k-100k less per year in salary at a startup vs a "big company", for 6 years time and considering that you also get other compensation at a big company, that isn't really that rewarding.
Now at $500m, your stock is worth $1m. Its now something worth 6 years of paycuts.
But this is such a narrow window. You have to get lucky to be one of the first 10 and join a company that will be worth half a billion dollars.
If you are not one of the first 10, you need the company to be worth ~$5billion to have your stock be worth it. How many of those are out there?
I think the point was that it was true for the national corporate media, but the local stations were somewhat protected until ajit pai allowed Sinclair to start sucking all of them up. Now the problems with MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, etc will pour into the local news stations as well. All local news and national news will be controlled by highly concentrated oligopolies. These past years we are seeing much more concentration of something that was already concentrated.
I agree. However, I stumbled into the world of KV stores (like RocksDB, LMDB, LevelDB, etc..) last year, and what is most surprising is that they all stop in the same place. I understand that they should do one thing and one thing well, but it is still disappointing when you have to implement things like replication, sharding, and indexing yourself.
There really aren't even that many DBMS that are KV (like redis) out there to handle it either. They are normally much more complicated (like adding SQL layer on top of it).
From what I could tell, its tikv is virtually useless without the rest of the tidb (the MySQL layer that sits on top written in go) to be useful.
TiKV has no replication / sharding built in, that is actually handled by a Placement Driver (PD)

I had one person say after I put in 4 hours "The code wasn't clean". That was his feedback.
I pressed him and he eventually said "I ran this by 3 Senior Python experts I know. All of them said the code wasn't good." No other details.
Before he even gave me the assignment he made his decision. He lied about asking 3 other people.
Coding assignments are always one sided. Unless someone from the company is going to sit with me and invest equal hours into the project, I will never do another one.
They are used by companies to filter out desperate employees (young engineers who don't have reputation to fall back on, or nothing to lose by doing it) and it signals a lower value to the company.
One problem I found is that streaming services have too much mental overhead. It sounds funny, but look at Netflix original content; Most of the story writing is "too good" and too dark (like most of their content seems to be about murderers or spooky stuff or substance abuse). I have to remember what happened in the previous episode and pay attention so I know whats happening in the next episode
Things on cable are more focused on self contained episodes. Black mirror accomplished this but again, it was too emotionally heavy. Netflix is too focused on binge watchers.
I haven't really found content (except old series from cable) that I can just "zone out" and be entertained like Futurama, cooking or auto shows and not worry if i didnt watch all of it.
I'm overseas and so I dont have a lot of the series from cable on Netflix. The content it has is good. But its not something I want to unwind with in the background.

I can't think of a use case of money that needs decimals except maybe computing ownerships percentage. but that should never be stored, but rather computed.
Anything that needs to be converted is a "front end" view. all computations should use atomic store of value, thus no conversion is needed in contracts.
This article doesn't say anything about using your card abroad or how widely accepted Amex is. I have an Amex and use it for all my subscriptions, and spending when I'm in the US. In the rare chance that I can't use Amex, I have capital one venture.
When I use Amex, almost universally people comment that my card looks cool and take it and play with it. But whenever I recommend Amex to someone, it is always met with "but I won't be able to use it everywhere", generally they are talking about the US, but the same sentiment applies abroad also.
Its true, when I am outside the US, I can't use Amex, I have to use my Venture card. How much of the drop can be attributed to the fact that now say in a country like Brazil, even people selling packs of gum from mobile tables accept MC and Visa? How many more millennials travel abroad? How many want to use the same card in whatever country the find themselves in and not have to worry?

That is the solution. What is the problem? I understand the problem they want to solve but I don't think that is truly the problem. I drank the kool-aid for over a year before I realized that the theoretical and practical realities are incompatible.
A truly trustless decentralized ledger is for the most part useless since as soon as you need to interact outside of the system (like change real world goods). Registering ownership on Ethereum and being trustless cannot coincide as ownership is a societal construct backed by governments and consensus. If I register stock on ethereum, I still need trust in the societal agreement outside of ethereum. Only transactions are trustlessm, but it is still very very far from clear that trustless transactions actually mean something without trustless assets that can be run on a truly trustless network.
I think this is evidenced by the fact that there are no compelling real world use cases for ethereum. There has been a huge downturn in turnouts at ethereum events and mindshare coinciding with the DAO attack after they shot themselves in the foot by doing the manual rollback which showed you still need trust in the network that runs the "trustless" system thus there is no such thing as a trustless system.
Yes it is still young, but I don't believe the theoretical case of having a trustless system (ethereum) interact with a trustful system (human society) while still being trustless is solved or even possible.
As soon as trust enters into the equation at any level the entire premise of ethereum is worthless moot. Could there be a narrow domain of applications that can use a "minimal trust network"? Yes. But that is different from being truly trustless.
Trust is a feature not a bug. Are there situations where you want less trust? Absolutely. But you are shifting the trust to another agent, not getting rid of it completely. Ethereum can exist, but it won't transform society and replace governements like everyone was hoping to ~9 months ago.
So now the cost of labor went up 6x? Don't you see a problem in that solution? The people only have jobs because labor is so cheap.
Other countries don't have child labor laws because their job market evolved and pushed the low labor cost jobs into other countries.

I think a lot of people believe that if they spend money, it makes them more likely to follow what they set out to do. App creators are more than happy to provide that service (exercise apps, weight tracking apps, etc.)

Even then the key part of a ORM is the "R". ORMs allow you to utilize a RDBMS transparently as if you were manipulating the OOP objects.

Election is a singleton so they keep reinstantiating it every time they want to use it instead of just doing
election = Election()
at the module level and having a more idiomatic singleton (module variable are singletons). But a singleton design probably isn't the best approach.
The singleton example isn't that bad of code since it assumes that one server will run one election which is a valid assumption, but reading through this code makes me weary about e-voting. I think this proves that OpenSource doesn't always mean good code. There is little incentive for people outside of Estonia to contribute to the project.
IMO JSX is such a simple syntactic sugar around javascript that you can unfold it in your head.

Its such a simple transformation and adheres to javascript standard behavior. JSX doesn't add anything new, it just adds a way to do something old.
Its a shortcut to 1 transformation and thats it. You can unpack it in your head.
So while I agree with you that it isn't "standard javascript", if you look past the visual differences, there is no difference between JSX and javascript.
This is in stark contrast to the Vue.js (and other) template systems which, while they compile to javascript, the amount of transformations makes it impossible to extend the template system easily without touching the internals of the template engine.
JSX is just syntax, other template systems are entire secondary languages.
This doesn't make sense to me. Law enforcement has been able to get that information easily for quite some time directly from telephony systems. Timestamps and durations have been a part of phone UIs for quite some time, which to me indicates that it is in fact interesting to more than law enforcement... unless phone manufacturers conspired to display that information to help LEOs when they confiscate phones.
Anyone who cares about state coercion and violence should know phone calls are about the least sensitive way to communicate.
