I choose fourth option.

4) googles big model just performs worse than K3 and GLM so they choose not to embarass themself.

Like I love Gemini and use it a lot to one-shot whole MR with huge contexts, but its just much worse when its come to tool use and agentic coding.

Google also gave away 1 year Gemini plans with Pixel phones that either did not work at all for existing Google One users or messed up subscriptions by downgrading your account to worse plan, or making your existing paid time shorter if you been on cheaper plan or recently changee countries. Etc.

Like when you try to give Google money they try to squeeze you as much as possible.

At the same time you can get 5 time more limits for free just by registering 10 free Google accounts.

Google subscriptions are one big mess.

Apple is very much like WhatsApp. Yes you cant perfectly trust their E2EE against state actors, but both in fact put some effort into making world have little bit more privacy.

At least on Desktop we have usable Linux, but on the phones there is literally nothing usable because thanks to Google efforts switching to GrapheneOS mean tons of apps either not working or break every few months.

Yes its possible to make Andoid spy on you a little less, but even for tech savvy person its damn inconvinient and Google making platform worse with every single release.

Thanks to Google "security" I can use my banking apps on 9 years old device with 6 years outdated firmware, but not on GrapheneOS.

What we really need is to journalists and cybersecurity community to use these systems to track few hundred of politicians and publish the results. Just like some crooked cops already used it to stalk their exes.

We know how much some billionares hate their jets tracked even though they have small army of bodyguards and three letter agencies spending budget of small country protecting them.

Lets see how comfortable much less protected US politicians gonna be with a fact that everyone knows what time they leave their house by minute, what routes they take and where their cars gonna be.

  > But back to Flock: public cameras are not 24/7 surveillance, as those don't surveil people at home.
Fortunatelly for that they can have Amazon partnership. It only got backlash because they been stupid enough to advertise it as superbowl ad.

And backlash its got is the real proof that people not protest against it only because they are not really aware of how bad it is.

  > landing patches to make Wine better on Mac
AFAIK they dont contribute back to Wine. There some chance they quietly pay to CodeWeavers, but likely this wouldnt be kept secret.
  > I fail to see why it matters if they support dx to metal conversion or if they support vulkan
It matters because if Apple embraced Vulkan it would give more market share to one standard API for non-Windows platforms.

Their strategy trying to push proprietary solutions simply doesnt work when their OS have 2% of PC gaming market share.

Apple announced game porting toolkit 3 years ago and no one uses it. Well, unless Apple fund ports as PR stunts.

At the same time Valve released Steam Deck 4 years ago and by now nearly all Windows games are playable on Linux.

Apple could easily make gaming on Mac feasible by contributing to Proton, Wine, DXVK and officially supporting Vulkan at least through translation layer.

Or just partner with Valve to do exactly this for their platform.

Instead they choose to build another proprietary solution nobody gonna use and that will die as soon as they lose interest.

Why dont you think proprietary models use these optimization techniques and way more?

It very much possible Anthropic, OpenAI and Google able to serve their models much cheaper than their current API prices.

They just dont do it because they dont try to ubdercut each other and so far chinese models been percieved behind SOTA.

To be honest I do not thihk you are wrong. Not in a way AI talent is underpaid, but they unlikely need to offer $1,000,000 sign up bonuses to just create AI lab. Its still pays better than average SWE job, but not x5-x10 more like in US.

Though in manufacturing China is dominating because of immense optimized supply chain, economy of scale and now workforce with know-how.

I honestly cant compare with US since I'm not from US, but to produce something in EU you will have weeks or months lags on logistics of source materials and components. And some industries only exist in some countries, etc.

In China in one single place you have anything you need to produce from a toaster to a car in hands reach or might be few days at most.

And I guess China did the same with education. Education is a lot cheaper there so they just have more talent.

Violent extremist groups can also meet in parks and go to a bars. Police should follow everyone around and make everyone wear mandatory surveillance devices. Let's call them portable telescreen.

Oh extremists can also buy knives...

Honestly conversation did derailed. For me it isnt about US vs EU. Its about difference between living in a country with some functioning institutions, rule of law and education / healthcare.

I do care about having to waste my life setting DIY solutions because country I live in doesnt have it.

I just lived around the world a bit especially in said cheap countries. A lot of people who spend 3-6 months travelling there after college or while nomading seriously undersell how much hassle living there can be if you're there for good.

Its a good to have a job or company in US / EU while living in SEA knowing you can always return if something go sour or when you decide to start a family. Its nowhere as easy if you have hypothetical scenario of moving there for a decade.

Thats all.
