I went to setup my iPad, and it had an option to add multiple icloud accounts! I don't know if this is equivolent to user profiles, or just munge all of icloud data like notes, contacts, calendar, apps all together

after using both for the past 5 years, I'd say the main difference between peotry and uv is user experience and documentation. Poetry fought me every step of the way w.r.t. pip migration, venv, poetry updates. uv just worked in these areas, which meant I was updating packages much more frequently, which increased my experience and confidence in uv for a virtual cycle.

It beat Digital Ocean's 2 CPU 4Gi Shared ($24/mo)

I just heard about hetzner.com from this post, and it seem like they can beat namecheap's pricing. Hetzner's CPX31 offers 4 CPU / 8Gi for ~$14.77/mo. I might have to check them out

Two days ago, Reddit ids have finally incremented passed the 2,147,483,647, or the maximum range of a signed int32. It seems one of Reddit's subsystems, the one that serves its photo albums broke due to the integer overflow.

Also, AWS lets you ask for a static IP access (EIP) which you don't pay for so long as it is attached to something (an ec2 instance, a load balancer, etc).

I heard the Mayor and SFPD have cleared the homeless in the TL, so they've moved to other parts of the city.

I think America's concerns are 4 fold:

* There is political and economic benefits to projecting American power in Asia and the Pacific and protecting American hegemony.

* China has had recent border clashes with many of its neighbors, including India, and the Philippines.

* China continues to build its man-made islands despite it being deemed illegal, an violating its neighbor's sovereignty and international law.

* Not to mention the numerous human rights violations China commits against its minority citizens and the people of Tibet.

Now, imagine an unchallenged China, potentially subjugating its neighbors by force, including India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines.

Other regional powers, such as Australia, have taken notice of Chinese ambitions and are taking steps to protect themselves. Arguable, a threatening China is an opportunity for America to strength ties and increase its power in the region.

Most conventional strategists believe a nuclear war wouldn't need to last a decade, as both parties would destroy themselves. Given the heavy civilian casualties and the decimation on the economies and infrastructure, the cost of a nuclear war and mutually assured destruction (MAD) outweigh the potential benefits.

I wish I knew the difference when I started at university. In retrospect, It wouldn't have changed anything, because I love my time as an undergrad at my school. But, the perception of what a software engineer career looks like would have changed. At best, I would have advocated to my school of engineering to offer a software engineering degree.

Though, I imagine it is difficult for universities. They're trying to be more theoretical and less practical than trade schools, despite the majority of undergrads do not continue to pursue more degrees. I imagine if universities shifted its focus to more applied sciences, it might be even harder to keep the number of applications for masters and phd programs up.

It sounds like you've already decided to go. In my opinion, you shouldn't be convinced to stay, you should have your own reasons on staying. For me, it's my chosen family.

This is a strategy imposed against racism and violence. If conservative voices include a lot of racism, then, yes, I guess they should stop being racists.

There is waaaaay too much content generated on Reddit for the admins to approve or curate. And the success of Reddit is in user-driven communities and content. Admins do not want to be in the business of content curation. Reddit is updating its content policy.

T_D wasn't banned because it was inactive. spez's post says, "All communities on Reddit must abide by our content policy in good faith. We banned r/The_Donald because it has not done so, despite every opportunity." They weren't banned for political ideology, they were banned for doxxing, fear mongering, and generally being a community full of toxic posts. That's the reason it was banned, and good riddance.

Since the donald moderators removed the new moderators that Reddit added (that was selected from and voting on in the donald subreddit), it was clear the moderators weren't interested in rescuing their subreddit to Reddit's standards.

I think Reddit is trying to avoid appearing capricious when it banned subreddits. Reddit users do want a rythme or reason to Reddit admins actions, otherwise, there'd be further user discontent.

Thanks for your insight. It's incredibly interesting! I suppose with so much inter-departmental exchanges of information running on legacy HW/SW, I can see why it might need several hours of downtime.

I actually wonder if the pandemic will discourage globalization. The NYT Podcast last week had a great segment on pandemic’s negative effects on globalization, specifically, the global supply chain. It postulates that the longer the supply chain is negatively impacted, the more likely corporations will try to localize.

That being said, 60+ days of lockdown, and Wuhan is only now starting to consider easing restrictions. Other countries’ responses have been half measured compared to China, so we might have a longer period social distancing. CDC estimates will need the current measures through July. Other articles I read say we’ll need on-again off-again social distancing for the next 15 months as the virus surges and wanes.

WTF? I would not expect large businesses to start lay offs immediately. These are troubling times indeed. All the best of luck to you.

Gosh, sorry to hear that, friend. I hope your situation stabilizes soon. Depending on where you live, a lot of municipals are suspending evicts, asking land lords to forgo collecting April rent, and considering giving citizens cold hard cash to help weather the COVID-19.

Yeah. I've checked in. They're planning on shipping my laptop to me on my start date. Everything is fine–for now. But things have changed so dramatically day by day, it's hard to know where we'll be in 2 and a half weeks. I worry when I see the markets dropping 7% every other day. I read stories how non-tech industries are cancelling job offers during this time. I think my future employer is well insulated, being a tech company. We'll see!

If my new employer bails, I might consider this. But I would probably try to find a new new job before then. Also, my boss wanted me to confirm 3 times what my last day would be, because, once he put it in the system, his hands were tied. I guess the LDO (Last day of office) process is pretty streamlined to tie up all the loose ends: halting pay checks, revoking unvested RSUs, stopping medical benefits, revoking user entitlements, etc.
