US gov hiring is absolutely broken. I applied for a role I'm absolutely qualified for (even referred to apply for it by someone on the team based on my resume and experience) and was rejected out of hand (twice, after an appeal too) without consideration. I'm actually willing to take a pay cut to serve my country, and I think actually you'll find senior engineers and business leaders willing to do this too, but if red tape or incompetent HR contractors get in the way, you'll lose that talent too.

Good luck getting anyone to do any work while they wait for the news on whether they're axed over the next 1-2 months (or up to the end of the year!). These trickling layoffs absolutely kill morale. Do it all at once, seriously.

Lots of issues but mostly it didn't meet the sky high initial expectations Intel set for the product. It might've met expectations with the current generation of the product combined with CXL, but now it's cancelled and we'll never know!

You can fund a dependent care flexible spending account with pre-tax dollars up to $5000 per household currently. That will cover ~2 months of care where I live, but I guess it's better than nothing at all...

Ugh, I feel bad for all my former coworkers. Pat was supposed to be the returning savior of Intel and now I'm hearing rumors he might not last through 2024 at this rate. The thing is, even if Pat goes down, Intel is too big to fail for the US from a national security POV. While TSMC is starting to build more fabs in the US, they're doing it kicking and screaming, and the funding in the Chips & Science Act is just a drop in the bucket for now. I fully expect more semiconductor industrial policy from the US gov in the next 10 years. It's a good time to be in semiconductor policy at Intel, SIA, etc. etc.

Generally speaking the vendor libraries have dynamic dispatch support, which can identify which functions are available on a CPU and then deploy to the best at runtime. Intel got into some hot water for having their dispatch hurt performance on AMD CPUs, but it seems that's been fixed. Their IPP-Crypto and AMD's AOCL-Cryptography libraries both support dynamic dispatch these days, for example.
