SMS routing and billing systems did cost money. Especially billing, as the standards had nothing for it, so it was done by 3rd party software for a very long time.

The cheapies are less useful for debugging real problems, due to their bad UI and severe limitations.

A good, fast reacting multimeter is likely better thing to get than a cheap scope.

That said the cheapies might be usable for debugging audio stuff.

Naturally there needs to be filtering and some sort of analog frontend. My main point was that mainstream rigs now do direct sampling, instead of zero-if or superhet with dsp IF.

And WSPR sure is magic, people do thousands of km with it off an rp2040 gpio pin.

The popular IC-7300 transceiver from Icom does that. Receiver samples the whole band and does downconversion in the digital domain (DDC) and same for the transmitter (DUC).

On the hobbyist side there is the TRX Wolf by UA3REO.

Patent unencumbered in a way that someone could make a commercially viable implementation.

Doesn't this exclude all modern cellular standards then?

UV-K5 does cost 1/10 to 1/20 as much as the handhelds did 20years ago. CB's seem niche and to this day the handhelds don't seem to go much below 100usd in price. Just not enough volume I guess.

That radio interference was the reason FCC almost banned alternative router firmwares ten or so years ago. The compromise that allows openwrt to exist is the radio drivers being signed binary blobs.

Folks were modifying stuff for more power, more "channels" and disabling dfs and apc. So it did not happen for no reason. And now vendors like Ubiquiti and Mikrotik have special USA models with more locked down firmwares.
