I guess, I don't know much about TikTok beyond the stuff that showed up in subreddits that I wound up filtering.

I gotta say my home view and my popular view are obviously impacted by the protest. I think nearly all of the subreddits I subscribe to participated, so all I see is content in the subreddits I moderate (which are also shut down). Popular looks old & stale to me, so I turned off my filtering... which revealed a bunch of stuff I don't care about.

For me this is turning into a meditation about how new users are frequently impervious to the messages and signs intended to help them and instead often want a real person to spoon feed them the content of those messages and signs. In the future I'd really like improve the experience of new users but I am not sure how to politely encourage them to engage their brains.

Scrolling through the list of subreddits that are participating it became clear to me that a lot of the sort of places that facilitate a kind of repetitive mindless viral content churn stayed open. That's not really all that surprising. So in that way I think you're right, users who like that sort of thing probably won't notice much or care.

I've had an account on Reddit for 17 years. Steve Huffman being dishonest and manipulative is who he is. Seems to me that the board is OK with him being dishonest and manipulative because if they had a problem with that sort of thing, he would not be CEO and Reddit would be a different sort of place.

2 subreddits with more than 20 million subscribers, 1 subreddit with more than 10 million, 23 with more than 1 million subscribers, 18 with more than 500K, 32 with more than 250K... seems like it's beginning to add up to me and it's only 7:40 CEST.

I'm shutting down roughly 50 just before midnight CEST and I expect things to accelerate with the date change at GMT.

Reading through the list of concessions and explanations attributed to Steve Huffman that Reddit is currently sending to subreddit moderators, I saw a couple of things that struck as almost certainly untrue or at least exaggerated.

I don't think Reddit is approaching this in good faith.

Pleasantly surprised this is still ongoing. I hope they are able to produce something that sees some success.

Sorta weird to see this thing back in the news after so long. Seems like they've gone through a revision and have been sold to a larger company since the last time I looked.

Given how many cartels have expanded operations to include synthetic opioids, methamphetamines, and human trafficking I am sceptical of efficacy of such a policy viewed only through the lens of defeating organised crime in Mexico.

Also, given how American policy seems to have to explore and exhaust all the bad options before settling on some mediocre option, I expect that the first policy choices might actually turn out to be harmful.

The former policy of allowing NSFW images from mobile apps but not from desktop browsers was dumb and contradictory. It created a ton of confusion. I hope they update their pubic facing documents and help to accurately reflect what they are really actually doing.

I am kind of on the fence about the content on YouTube being worth paying for but the website makes it so difficult to find the content that I am actually interested in seeing that it makes the whole experience absolutely not worth it to me to pay for.
