I just had the maintenance of an Android app dumped in my lap, and I’m dreading it. I have a decent amount of experience with iOS development and have been pretty impressed.

But everyone characterizes Android as a shítshow. As a consumer, Android’s profound problems are evident from the fact that millions of devices are orphaned soon after release, because users must wait for every telco to dribble out a special version of the OS for every device, one at a time.

The other sham being perpetrated is advertising some plane engines as running on “automotive” gas. This is BS, because that means only PURE gasoline, not gasohol. I challenge you to find a gas station selling 100% gasoline. I haven’t seen that in decades. So the touted “mogas” is nearly as much of a niche fuel as 100LL.

Way more than that these days. There’s only one supplier of 100LL, and even they don’t want to be in the business anymore.

The point wasn’t that the address is exposed by Apple; it’s that E-mail addresses are widely exposed by USERS, out of necessity.

Let's start with the fact that Apple is forcing people to use an E-mail address as a user ID. That's just straight-up stupid.

How many members of the public think that they have to use their E-mail account password as their password for Apple ID and every other amateur-hour site that enforces this dumb rule?

MILLIONS. I would bet a decent amount of money on it. So if any one of these sites is hacked and the user database is compromised, all of the user's Web log-ins that have this policy are wide open.

Then there's the simple fact that everyone's E-mail address is on thousands of spammers' lists. A simple brute-force attack using the top 100 passwords is also going to yield quite a trove, I'd imagine.

Apple IDs didn't originally have to be E-mail addresses. They're going backward.

If you don’t like your tab width, CHANGE IT. That’s a huge win over spaces, where indentation is hard-coded.

Radar’s asinine search functionality also obscures the seriousness of bugs by failing to reveal dupes.

It doesn’t (or at least didn’t) default to searching for all words used in the title; it only searches for the EXACT string you enter. It was a pain in the ass to even find bugs YOU wrote.

I couldn’t believe how goddamned dumb this is, or the Radar team’s response: Oh, you simply use Oracle syntax and wildcards in the title search! No explanation of how we were supposed to know this, or WHY.

Thunderbird sucks because, last time I checked, it had no way to copy or propagate filters between machines. Deal-breaker right there.

I’d be happy to hear that was fixed.

They seem similar from the very, very small amount of Kotlin I’ve seen. Why do you prefer it over Swift?

It does make sense. Flash was used to create a whole generation of shitty, animated UI. I wonder how many millions of man-hours were wasted waiting for pointless animations to finish so you could click a button or enter some text.

I'm curious: Why would you use Blender for this? I consider it a 3-D modeling tool, not a video editor.

Then again, I just started using it. So far I'm pleasantly surprised at its UI. After using the detestable UI in GIMP (and the somewhat hokey-looking one in Audacity), I didn't expect much from open source.

Can you cite some examples where UI animations aren't counterproductive, annoying, amateur-hour crap? Swiping screens away to convey a stacked hierarchy is useful, but beyond that I struggle to imagine what I'd do with them.

There's a reason we hated Flash-based Web sites, and animation was a huge part of it.

Now I'm considering which is worse: animated UI, or transparent UI. The asinine transparent-UI fad largely and deservedly died in the '00s, with the exception of Apple suddenly jumping on its discredited and defunct bandwagon years later.

Don't see why we need to bring back animated UI either, but I'm happy to consider suggested uses.

Speaking of stacked hierarchies, the rotatable 3-D display of views in a UI might be pretty useful. I like that idea.

I wish Google would stop farting out new languages every few months and focus on Kotlin. If they don't want to commit to any of them, they should throw in the towel, adopt Swift, and be done with it. The continual flailing is goddamned annoying.

That's interesting. I am an iOS developer, and find development for browser deployment to be a mountain of hokey crap and flavor-of-the-week frameworks all so you can kind of cajole MOST browsers to more-or-less show what you want where you want it on the screen.

And then you have to write all the serialization and back-end support on the server side, or use yet another flavor-of-the-week stack to broker all of the back-and-forth.

Companies with shitty UI often make unfounded claims that "users prefer it." Adobe is another prime offender here.

Amen. Anyone running a company who opts to put it in San Francisco or Silicon Valley at this point is issuing a big F-U to employees.

And this pay-cut policy is bullshit. If employees are allowed to work offsite, then that site should not be dictated. It's a win/win, because although the employee saves money, so does the company. And thanks to Trump and Republicans, employees can't even deduct the money they spend on electricity, office equipment, and rent.

We had a similar one in my area that turned out to be a food-delivery guy.

In many areas, NextDoor appears to be a glorified, technically-incompetent mailing list populated by pathetic NIMBYs. There was someone on there seriously complaining about a chirping bird outside his window in the morning.

NextDoor is also underhanded and thinks nothing of bringing harassment down on its users by

1. Spamming a user's neighbors without that user's permission, pretending that the user is "inviting" neighbors to join NextDoor.

2. Publishing users' addresses by default. This one ranks as one of the most offensive and idiotic privacy violations on a major platform today.
