I wonder what is going to happen in 10years to SF if the housing prices continue to rise? If the housing market is out of reach for the “tech elite” then tech companies will not be able to continue to thrive without workers to fill vacancies or fill the positions in new companies.

Tennessee is a great choice for a new home. The healthcare industry is the main driver of fantastic opportunities for those with superior computer skills. TN has no income tax, homes are very affordable here, etc.

We are not in the healthcare industry but we will be hiring several employees soon including a CTO and we do not expect any difficulties in finding people to work in our Nashville or Chattanooga location. With a number of colleges and universities here, opportunities seem plentiful for those wanting to teach in these areas as well.

Why do companies think that when they are caught being less than forthright that their explanations will be seen as anything but disingenuous?

This is a huge pendulum swing from our present state of massive regulations. The writer forgets a number of things that should be taken into account.

People are much more transient and as such do not know their neighbors the way they did in years past.

With the media’s hyper focus on all things bad, people are much less likely to let their children stay with people other than super close friends or family.

Those who have chosen to not have children or who are waiting to have children until their careers are more est abolished often work very long hours. As such, they are far too tired to care for the children of others.

There are just a few reasons and there are many, many more.

I think Nathan makes a very good point. There are some people who are still on the rise w creativity and personal/professional growth. As a result of our own biases we focus so much attention on age over product (or product potential). This is unfortunate because we deny them an opportunity to shine and the world access to new, inventive options.

Until fraud and deceit stop being the go to business method, accountability will not deter this type of behavior. Just as we see with big pharma and here in banking, when the income from fraud far exceeds the penalty, these business methods and strategies will not change.

I do not pe sonally spend very much time on FB because I stay very busy. With what little free time I do have, I am simply not interested in the political rankings and flame wars nor am I interested in the million sponsored postings that amount to a feed of advertisements.

Until FB can be a pleasant place to visit people like me will be reluctant to spend much time there.

And then when we have a change in control in our governments administration the rules also change, as does the formula for calculating this rating. We will have a never ending target you cannot hit regardless of how much you try....just when you think you are getting close to your target score or rating the equation changes.

And of course the damage to the vehicle....”smash and grab.” While a side window may not be too costly, what if it is raining and interior damaged, etc. These costs to higher end vehicles could be quite costly.

I understand but it is not currently used to determine things like who may have a right to attend college or ..... it is the “trust level” determination based on the aggregate information compiled that really scares me.

There are so many factors that come into play when deciding to have a child w cost of living being just one of the many. In areas where people are delaying having a family only after establishing their career, people consider: reduction to one income or cost of daycare; what needs of children will do to career and the hours required for career; commute time if having to move out a bit for more affordable housing; concerns with schools (quality of education and violence in the school systems); higher incidents of disabilities based on the age of mother; and rising costs of everything. Autism is steadily increasing and this shows no signs of changing. Discrimination is rampant against pregnant women or mothers in the workplace, and general societal ills all make people question if they want to have children.

It would be very difficult to pinpoint with any accuracy why people are delaying or forgoing parenthood. Some reasons may be very personal or may be viewed as insensitive and may keep someone from stating the real reason why they choose not to have children. They may also may not be able to have children and give a reason because they do not want to share what they may see as something very private.

Maybe this article would be better titled “Is high rent contributing to the decline ..... in high density areas?”

But not all stimulants etc are used for performance enhancement, etc. There are many legitimate uses so like anything else, there would have to be exceptions to “the rule.”

And on the flip side, in the states that use lottery funds to provide college for all graduates with a specific GPA.....we are seeing a tremendous number of students losing their scholarships for poor grades or simply delaying entering the workforce to have a semester or more of playing at college.

This is scary to think about. Imagine if private companies provided our government information and the totality of our communications and purchases, or even content of private conversations or prescriptions that you filled determined a “trust level” and that this factored into whether we were accepted by a college or determined if we were eligible for loans etc. This would change the course of each life without question.

The cost to insurance companies is crazy if they just smash and grab. The loss of valuable work product to businesses is far higher.

I think this is becoming an exceedingly difficult market. Profit relatively small apparently and a number of competitors who are not retaining customers over the initial VC funded starter prices.

Not profitable yet and spends the lion’s share of its 15% take from sales on advertising. Rapid growth the key but given the prices mentioned I am not surprised that they have such growth. The real question is repeat customers or customer satisfaction with the Chinese made goods. Other apps have had rapid growth selling Chinese goods but attrition rates were staggering.

This article is spot on but misses two important points: 1) as customers are driven to the more convenient urgent care clinics such as The Little Clinic or Minute Clinic, they are losing the long-term consistency of medical review and care they once enjoyed through a relationship with their primary care physician. Second and most importantly, fewer and fewer people are going to medical school and of those that are, fewer are being general practitioners or internists so by and large your medical care is primarily given by PA’s and NPR’sboth of who. Require physician supervision.

I am all for customer centric healthcare but decreasing reimbursement rates and increasing government unfunded mandates are resulting in fewer people going to medical school. When a doctors patient load continues to increase they have less time to spend with patients and reviewing labs, etc.

This article could be summed up with: start talking WITH your children at a young age and continue to do that throughout their life and you will know more than you would find via snooping. Invasion of privacy will damage your relationship and simply cause the child to be more secretive and aloof.

This article is ripe with good points but it misses one huge point, many if not most, hugely successful businesses make decisions that are not in the best interest of humanity. We need look no further than the insurance industry which makes decisions to deny coverage for services that are proven effective requiring lengthy and stressful appeals to the insured and their families. Or the pharmaceutical companies increasing the rates of an epi-pen to $600 simply because they can knowing that many families cannot afford them and that this decision will result in untold numbers of deaths. Or to insurance companies who are charging monthly premiums to consumers through Obamacare when they have few if any physicians accepting the insurance or new patients but that does not matter because consumers are were forced to purchase insurance or suffer tax penalties. While many were excited to see insurance available to everyone, we quickly saw that having insurance does not equal having healthcare.

I agree with the writer that 2017 has been a year of reckoning in many industries surrounding harassment, misconduct and unethical business practices. These transgressions have gotten a free pass for far too long.

And while I do not agree that any individual need accept poor treatment from others on sexual preference or any other reason in order to have a broader discussion on topics of relevance, I do understand the point that was being made. I think he was trying to say that sometimes we have to listen to viewpoints we do not agree with in order to participate in the broader discussion. That in no way equates to accepting those opinions in order to be at the table for the broader discussions.

Now before I am tarred and feathered for saying we have to listen does not mean that I have to agree or accept or allow disparagements. What I am saying is that if we want to try to learn from each other on any topic of consequence we all have to listen. We all have to have the opportunity to be heard. We do not have to agree. But we will never know where someone is coming from if we do not allow them the freedom to give their point of view and they will never know mine if I sit idly by and say nothing.

Finally, it is easy to see the result of the “disprutions” that have caused many apartment building to feel more like extended stay hotels but it was not as easy to see the result of these “disruptions” at the onset of these businesses. How to fix the outcomes is going to be debated for years to come I fear. It is incredibly difficult to rein in anything that is working to the benefit of many people even when it is at the same time a detriment to many others. Many people have been able to save their homes after divorce by renting out a spare room and at the same time areas of the country are suffering under dramatically increasing housing costs as homes are snapped up in order to be listed on every available short-term housing rental site. With yesterday’s press release about AirBnB and Brookfield Property Partners investment and 25% take in short-term rental income from 6 buildings to be built in FL it seems that the escalating property values are going to expand. Home ownership is becoming more of a dream than a reality for individuals in a number of states as properties are built focused on the short-term rental income over the long-term rental or for homes, over ownership and residential occupancy.

I guess it is true ‘for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction’. We need creative ideas and resolutions to many issues facing us today, but sadly we choose to fight against one another rather than find a common good we can unite around. It is not always as simple as it some would like to believe because while some improvements can be made we must face the facts that some damage will not be undone and new problems will arise as we attempt to unwind the path of destruction that has be wrought by unfettered growth and “disruption.”

Deny them all because they tend to be obtrusive and when I did allow a select few, they were frequently of little value or importance. Since denying them all I get more done and am not subjected to frequent interruptions.

I don’t like the spammy apps but I do think there are good smaller businesses who need some of these services. I guess the challenge is finding the balance between helping small businesses and cutting down on the spammers.

Seems that the bigger companies are getting the more they focus on shutting businesses out of economical ways of becoming more efficient where technology is concerned. Many of these smaller businesses are simply developing a means for the convenience of their customers to do what they currently undertake but in a more time consuming manner. Yes, they hope to gain new customers but moreso they are are trying to provide a service to their existing customers. Shutting these smaller businesses out will just make it harder and more expensive for them to ever compete with the big competitors in their respective industries.

Would the breach appear worse if her degree was in CS or not? Seems the HN community is trying to correlate her degree to the breach and this is virtually impossible. Her MFA did not cause the breach nor is their an identifiable correlation.

In some states the collection of the fee is not relevant. All that is relevant in these states is that you do or do not have a alicense to practice and that you were conducting work that is typically conducted by an attorney and you are providing legal advice. In some states just the act of typing a Motion for someone who is representing themselves in open court is practicing law without a license unless you have passed your bar exam. You can get in trouble for drafting a Motion for your spouse and vice versa unless you are an attorney representing your spouse.

Legal advice should be limited to someone who is an attorney. There are ways around that giving of advice, you can say, "if air were in that position I would do xyz." Or "when that happened to me my attorney said I should xyz."

Practicing law without a license is a crime albeit one not often prosecuted unless you are representing yourself as an attorney and in most cases that involves the transfer of monies for those legal services but not always.

Shopify has a seven day window from charge authorization to shipment. I think you are stretching the bounds of what Shopify has been known to allow. I think this is either a severe miscommunication between you and Shopify on what you are doing or you need to be on a traditional crowdfunding platform for preorders as you have used in the past.

I cannot address the legalities but I will say that it is suspect.

There was recently a thread where we talked about being able to access the internet anonymously because of the tracking done by Facebook, Amazon, and other sites/retailers.

I had a friend who was stalked online for years by an ex and it drove her off the Internet and then basically underground. While this request could be innocent (looking for old friend, etc) it might be helpful if this person making the request might explain the purpose, etc. Then it would be up to those consider searching if they believe the person on the why's and if they want to help.

Just like most things, this hold be good and it could be bad. Whether it is legal may come down to the ultimate purpose the search is undertaken and what the person does if the username is identified.

It does but that is not necessarily a lesson that needs to be learned by those who are poor. If you read the thread here about those of us who have had to clean out our aging parents home it is amazing how much stuff they have that they hold on to forever and really did not serve a purpose other than to have it.

We all make financial mistakes. It is just that the mistakes of the poor have much more profound consequences.

I don't argue against things that don't exist (time machine). And you are missing my point, most people who are poor do not have a credit card. There options are few and far between.

What I am suggesting by education is financial education such as don't spend what you don't have (if you have an account, don't write bad checks). Don't borrow money from payday lenders, etc. How to reduce expenses by having a roommate, utilizing public transportation, starting a community garden, etc. Then adding things such as you can go for dental care that is income based? Where you can go for annual flu shots etc?

I am not trying to make excuses for the decisions people make. What I am saying is to give alternatives (credit cards) that are not likely available to the majority of people who are poor does little to advance efforts to help find solutions that should be aimed at education and the development of safety nets for those all too common but expenses expenses (dental care).

When people know better, they do better. It has been repeated time and time again in these comments. People learned a better way and with that knowledge they were able to make much better choices and change their lives.
