I think they're not understaffed, for now. They're delivering new features and fixing most bugs. A understaffed engineering team usually struggles with that.

Not "any" but "most". I've worked for a company whose RoR codebase/structure looked completely different from the usual because they used a Domain Driven Design-inspired architecture.

I also had good results with recruiters. They will actually get you at the door, so you better be prepared. Seems to be a decent strategy for people who are bad at networking like I am.

I live close and know people who livelihoods depends on that forest. Believe it or not, it's not the farmers or loggers fault. Their livelihoods depends on that forest. Farmers depend on the rain cycle. Loggers depend on the forest staying healthy, so new trees grow so they can keep their business going. Illegal logging does happen but it isn't their fault exclusively either.

The root cause is illegal occupation and settlement of land. People invade other people's land, often federal land, they cut down all of the trees, they burn it down, so they can clear it to set up makeshift camps. They then split and sell the land. Once there are people living on it, it's pretty much a lost cause due to how loosely enforced private ownership of land is, specially federal land. Also, it's a lucrative business, and involves corruption in all levels. People affected by it, like loggers who lose their property and livelihoods can hardly do anything, since the invaders will often get violent and the State wont do anything.

I think it has to do with how much money some job will produce over the investment, and also OFC due to to supply/demand. How hard a job is, is kind of irrelevant for the compensation.

Due to the nature of SW, you can reach thousands of customers with little investment, so you may as well slap a fat margin on it. There are SW products associated with pretty much any economic activity these days, from textile machines to farm management (got job offers to work on products in these areas recently), so SWEs are in high demand. And if the market is not doing well, you can always strike on your own and try building something people will want to use and to pay for, for little investment (again).

Cool anecdote. Here in Brazil, some small shops and cybercaffes will offer copy/printing services to you for a small change. That's usually where people go if they have to print/scan something. BTW this service is also know as Xerox.

I saw some shops running on retail printers, but most use those printers you can just fill with cheap ink.

I think being full stack is doable to some extent, I often find that it's easier to design a good solution that you can deliver in a timely manner if you know more of the stack. You'll face less "glue code" and "domain change" issues, so you ship stuff faster. I think the challenge is being full stack, understanding deeply each layer of the stack, and being comfortable with the fact that you'll be paid the same compensation regardless of if you're doing 2~4 persons jobs.

We all jiggle bits of code around to some extent. I doubt everyone here is writing their own lang/interpreter/compiler/std library/network stack. I think the offending part is not understanding what the hell you're jiggling around.

BTW as bad as the "jiggle programmer" there's the "superenterprise software engineer" who can't ship code because they spend way too much time writing stuff from scratch, making sure it follows all the good principles and software patterns, and that the code is super optimal and covers all edge cases.

"Buy now, pay later" This is something that's really widespread where I live. You can buy stuff with your credit card and it pay over 12x months "without interest" (we know everyone is sharing interest costs instead). And many people do this. Instead of saving, they just buy the thing they want and pay it over the year with their monthly income.

Meanwhile I'm making ~1/10th of the average. Been applying but looks like companies are looking for folks with +4yr experience. US and UK companies are no go since most aren't hiring people located outside of the US, and the few that do, it's for 1/10th of the average pay again.

Making +100k USD would be nice but I'm looking for 20k or maybe 30k, that would be way more than what I'm making currently. Can anyone share some tips? Should I just grind it out until I have enough yrs of experience to compete/be eligible for higher paying jobs?

Works for me. We enjoy the same benefits high capital enjoys when investing on crypto. Saves lots on paperwork and taxes. Plus, now I can save my wealth from being stolen by the govt when it decides to print it's way into our 6th currency.

This is funny but on a side note, isn't this exactly what some casinos and some malls/stores do? I once spent one hour in a duty free mall because it was like a maze and I couldn't find the exit.

I still think the reason are custom duties (which I think is something immoral), and anything else is just a consequence. Buying an Apple product from elsewhere is more expensive than buying one here. If that wasn't the case, people would just import the products, and the local businesses would have to adjust or risk bankruptcy.
