I feel like the only people that "like" javascript or those that had it for their first language. Its needed, its better than it was, but compared to just about any other language its a total mess.

I allow my kids to plea their case anytime they disagree. They get one shot so i usually remind them of that and they usually disappear for a bit thinking their case through before coming back. Now i keep an open mind and hear there side on why whatever i just decided was unfair or why i was wrong.

If its a good case (or they argued it well) i change my mind. IF not then the answer is final. Period. There is never a second go. Now this seems harsh but you can't negotiate with terrorists. Once a decision is made the sooner they learn its whats happening the sooner they quit that trying to wear you down thing.

IF when discussed usually means fasting daily. So maybe your food window is only between 4 - 8 pm. The anti-aging stuff you saw/read (if its the same that i did) was more about actual fasting where you might not eat everyday and here they did find some linkage to aging.

You are only eating 500 calories a day? That seems really low but i am not an expert.

You should read "Deep Work" i found it very enlightening and have put a lot of it into practice to make sure i have time for deep and creative work.

Excluding chasing the shiny object (the javascript race you mentioned) lifetime learning is part of the job description. If you don't love to learn and to apply the things you have learned the tech industry really isn't for you.

Also 1-2 languages... that's really on the shallow end most devs, myself included, will learn a lot more than that and each new language is much easier to pick up then the previous ones.

However as you get more experience, at least for me, you tend to stick to a handful of languages that each cover a domain.

Is SO just tired and dead at the end of the day? Help them more, delegate out anything that you can to 3rd party services (not as expensive as you would think).

I was one of the developers years ago. You find your language ORM library and away you go happy coding. It was only after running into some performance issues and other bottle necks that i put my head down and spent a week learning the DB (granted its not a long time but you can learn A LOT about SQL and your DB in 40 hours).

Not only did it solve my bottle neck issues it just made it very apparent that there are a lot of things ORM do that make everything harder. They have their place but working with the DB/SQL/Triggers/Views/Mat Views/ ... improved my applications greatly.

Now years later anytime i am working with a new developer i always stress that they at least learn the basics.

How did it happen that junior JavaScript developers feel so insecure about using the standard stuff?

I know a lot of "developers" that are learning frameworks and not javascript. When you start in a black box then you look for other black boxes to fill in the gaps you need.

I am not even opposed to that. I strongly believe in never re-inventing (unless its academic) what can be used and has been tested, but when the developers are not javascript developers but react, vue, angular developers. Then you get this gap where the inexperienced are afraid to outside of what others have built.

These things come in waves and it happened in the early 90 late 80's also. We get ultra PC it goes to far we over correct and the start inching back to it.

If... that's exactly what its being used for unless its being used to purchase illegal goods (ala silk road - which i have no problem with) but as a normal currency in the western world no one is going to adopt it so its an asset until it vanishes.

We made this cool application and you can use it without paying for it by allowing us to use the data.

Office more specifically Excel and I know linux has alternatives but they are not as good and everyone else i am working with is using/sending excel.

I excitedly installed the new crossover linux because of there office 2017 support in my manjaro machine at home and yea i guess it "works" but the experience was slow, painful, and i wouldn't call it stable.

Beyond that i find i am constantly having to put work into my linux machine to get things to run YES its a million times better than it used to be AND I WANT to run linux but its always more work.

Kids are hard work, expensive, a huge responsibility (it's your job to make sure they don't end up entitled little assholes) and you have to give up a 3rd of your youth. I never wanted kids.

Accidentally got my girlfriend pregnant in my early 20's got married and had another child, on purpose, 5 years after the first.

I wouldn't change anything and even with all the sacrifice and hard work the rewards run deep and i couldn't imagine the person i would be had i not ended up a father.

My oldest is heading to college in next fall and i am already feeling sad about how her daily absence is going to leave me feeling a bit empty.

It's not for everyone and i can only speak for myself but i never knew i wanted them or how much more fulfilling my life would be until i had them.

That would be a pretty awesome non-profit.
