I've now worked with 3 teams that have moved from Python (2/3) and C++ (1/3) to (async) Rust. All successfully, all with less bugs, moving faster, etc.

And now we have AI.

These discussions continue to come up, and I feel like it's wasting time on the wrong issues.

Is AI *borrowing concepts* from artists? Yep. Do artists borrow concepts from other artists? Yep. Is AI or humans in a vacuum when creating new art? Nope. Is the cat out of the bag? Yep. Is this the same with text? Code? Literally anything AI generates? Yep.

A major problem is AI being used to replace humans, which of course, is borrowing concepts from humans... which, oops, you just replaced. It's not just artists.

We have much bigger issues than "AI is stealing my art". It's really not. It's just being used to "optimize" you, the human, out of the equation.

The suggestion to switch to Chrome is pretty rich. Firefox is more privacy conscious Chrome even with this enabled.

I've been trying to convince people of this for years. The problem is from my view, that people have the idea of IP being some sort of the American Dream ingrained in their heads that they can't even reason about anything else.

People are tired of capitalism reducing them to numbers that the powers that be -- now corporate interests -- give no shits about.

No, it feels that way because music is a monthly service, any media is a monthly service cost, backups are monthly service cost, news are a monthly service cost, VPN is a monthly service cost, internet is of course a monthly service cost, password management is a monthly service cost, anti-malware/AV is a monthly service cost, ...this list just goes on and on.

And they want $10/month for unlimited searches full well and knowing $5/300 isn't even a reasonable bracket for half of us.

It's steep, and we're all swimming in in these costs.

$5/unlimited would be more reasonable, but it still piles on all these SaaS costs that everyone now uses. Gotta grow grow grow grow you know. Capitalism is great!

I'm not sure why the bigger issue isn't being talked about more, but yes, algorithms and "AI" are deployed in fashions that optimize profit. That's it. Profit. It's only getting much, much worse.

Totally agree that individuals buying houses just for the sake of renting them out is also a problem. Renting out your legitimate 2nd home, I don't have a problem with.

This effects small businesses as well: These large mega corps buy up huge chunks of land and plan the entire thing from housing (which of course comes with their tight and pretty unregulated HSA) as well as slots pre-planned for particular businesses.

Here in Utah you can drive across the entire Wasatch valley and see a repeat "stamp" of this crap every 10 miles.

This feels like attacking a symptom, not the cause. Housing and real estate across the board have been bought up by private corporations -- including housing that they then turn around and Airbnb. This has plagued the housing market in general, and of course, Airbnb.

Airbnb itself is/was still great when you can find a private owner leasing out their extra/summer/whatever home.

I've heard this same remark from now 3 appliance installation/repair folk. The advise I was given was do NOT upgrade i.e. our refrigerator because it will keep working while the new models are made to die.

This really shouldn't shock anyone, it's a bit of the status quo for appliances, printers, toys, you name it. Planned obsolescence is real and going strong.
