Actually, yea. Many people do. It's relatively common. This is an element of personal responsibility. Granted, I know how to cook and I'm not a big fan of boxed, processed foods. This makes the gamut of foods I care about easier to track.

Plus, knowing that grapefruit helps metabolize different things helpful and cheapens your bartab. You'll get drunk faster after eating a grapefruit or two. Animal derived fats help slow down the inebriation process, like butter and a really greasy beef patty.

Agreed. When your job requires you to meet new people often or do trade shows, business cards with a qr code are the way to go. At one trade show I collected about 80 cards. About 10 people had special app vcards. Each with a totally different app. I'm not downloading an app for your information. Give me the fucking piece of paper.

However, pro tip. Blank back cards. People want to write notes about you and vice versa. Stop over designing cards with a back. A typical card is not a flyer. You should only hand them out to people you've met and talked to. That same card will fail as that hybrid business card/flyer. You'll never have enough info to justify expecting someone to go "huh, I just found this card somewhere without context and suddenly I'm compelled to talk to them".

The only version of meditation I can speak to is probably better called focus training.

Just sit in a darkish room, no noise, close your eyes and just say in your head "breathe in" as you breathe in, hold for like 3 sec and think nothing, then breathe out saying in your head "breathe out", hold for 3 sec while thinking nothing.

Repeat.

You wont get to round 2 without your mind wondering and thinking about something else. Just focusing on your breathing without thinking about work, friends, politics or when you stubbed your toe yesterday is an incredibly hard task.

That's 1 part of meditation.

Another part is then doing the same idea with your breathing but then to an "idea". I find when I try to do focus training, I run into thoughts that "bother me". Well, I'd say it's my subconscious trying to warn me about something. Thus, I'll do the same thing with just that thought, and funny enough the wandering thoughts will relate heavily to whatever that issue is. I then start to analyze the issue in now a really calm state. Eventually I come to either the conclusion to the problem in a way that brings me closure to never worry about it again or what my next step is, which again, gives me a sense of closure/stop worrying.

Breathe in/breathe out, my subconscious brings up another stress/anxiety ridden issue tormenting me. Time to meditate on that.

A lot of it is like surfing a wave. You're just letting your mind bring up thoughts. You cant consciously force it without inflicting a bias. Once you feel like you have all the evidence, then you can put it together. Eventually, you do this enough, the amount of time you spend focus training will be on your breath as you've dealt with all the things your subconscious is pressuring you about.

The second part is what I think is closest to traditional meditation, but I cant see how to get there without the first part.

Past CDL holder here.

Fyi, you are then a "professional driver" even in a normal car driving to the grocery. If you get a ticket, many states will instantly double the fine because as a pro, "you know better". Plus there's the medical aspect and other bullshit.

Unless you're going to actually use it, dont get it. Learn to drive an 18 speed with air brakes etc, sure. Just dont get the actual cdl.

I think the problem with "political beliefs" is do you really believe in them or do you want to be apart of a club? Pretty much anytime I've had a calm political discussion with someone, I've found out that they're a scatter chart on that political leaning grid instead of a solitary point. Yet they still say I'm this party. Or they're just a parrot for whoever is the poster child that week for whatever party.

Political beliefs when parroted as a clear cut, right/wrong for every situation is what makes people's stomach churn to projectile levels.

Political beliefs when presented as a complex flaw of the human condition that makes us all realize we're better off burning it all to the ground and sleeping on grass again... then enacting a system to severely punish anyone who tries to bring it all back, which would require a group to enact said system with then another group to oversight that group... oh shit wait...

You, this.

I can second this fully. Figured out the same thing when I spent a solid week nazi tracking my eating.

The thing that blew my mind. I always used heavy cream in my coffee. 150cal per 2 tablespoons. I would use like a quarter cup. I switch to milk, just 150cal per cup.

The little things really damn matter.

What about all the science on obesity related deaths?

https://www.who.int/news-room/facts-in-pictures/detail/6-fac...

This hasn't been a secret for a long time. Yet when anyone says someone needs to put the fork down and go for a walk because they're fat... granted general diet changes need to dramatically change due to modern "foods".

I say this again like in another post, generally the same people who scream the political rhetoric of day 1 covid prevention are the same ones who think anything less than fat acceptance is fascism even though their same source also says obesity is just about as deadly.

It truly is hard to care now when people dish out "scientific illiteracy" like they're arms dealers dishing out guns during a war.

Way too much of covid rhetoric is rooted in vote swaying, on all sides. The "correct" tie colors are in charge and nothing really changed.

Plus, let's please stop and remember why any pharmaceutical takes time to become widespread... wait, sorry, pharmaceutical companies have a perfect track record of business practices. Sorry, my bad. No one claiming to have a cure for anything has ever done so out of malevolent greed.

I mean 2.8 million folks die each year due to obesity related diseases and effects.

https://www.who.int/news-room/facts-in-pictures/detail/6-fac...

Since fat is beautiful, does that make covid more beautiful? Maybe we should stop stigmatizing it.

PS: I vomited in my mouth after typing that. But my general point to that sarcasm, putting any "problem" on a pedestal is stupid. Is covid dangerous, absolutely. 1 death is one too many. But a lot of the same people who go hysterical about covid, claim obesity is fine... and wear masks while alone at home during zoom meetings. There was no way to day 1 avoid deaths no matter the "scientific illiteracy". That's just political rhetoric to sway votes. Just like student loan forgiveness.

Agreed, extreme concepts are not hard. But I think the fascinating part is the salesmanship involved. Something I've noticed, really high concept artists are fantastic salesmen... and really shitty artists (80% of the time). They can convince people that a duct taped banana on the wall or just splatter paint can emotionally transcend you. Dont get me wrong, I like some abstract art when there is an aesthetic quality to it. But the worship status given to something like this, one incredibly slow note every however months... come on. You could do the same with Vanilla Ice's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 song from the 90s. Doesnt mean anything... other than that song still slaps :)

I'll take listening to an amateur messing with guitar chords while drunk in a shitty bar over something like this. Because I can actually experience the shitty bar music. You literally cannot experience this "art project".

If you're in the USA, heres a fun fact: your city and/or county helped pay for the 5g infrastructure out of tax payer dollars.

Next fun fact. All those telecommunication cunts lobbied to greatly lower the lease rate for those paddles to be put on tax payer infrastructure.

Next fun fact. A majority of 4g infrastructure bonds and other loans cities and counties took out back in the day are about to be fully paid for, on average, between 2025-2030. Depends on the area.

Another one. They had to take out new loans for the 5g. Replacing soon to be freed tax payer revenue back to locked up.

Next one, a bunch of Florida special interests groups noticed this and countered the telecomm lobbying because 5g is pretty much fucking useless.

That all I found out from an in depth article in a business trade magazine called Florida Trends. Laying out a lot as to why FL voters should call their reps to stop telecomm lobbying.

It was a month or two later, "those dumb Floridians think 5g causes cancer and brain control" or whatever that stupid wave of propaganda bullshit was.

"But I can download Fortnite in 43 seconds with 5g!" Literally was everywhere as an argument FOR 5g a while back.

Congrats, your tax dollars went to the toilet so you can stream a 4k movie on a 4 inch screen.

Am I bitter, yes. Especially when on HN i kept reading you lot thinking all tech progress is good at any cost. Whatever conspiracy crap was bot trolled clouded the money aspect of the argument. But hey, whatever. Voters had the chance to free up tax revenues for public benefit. Nope, need that sweet sweet "high speed". That's not the "rich" or "capitalism's" fault since it was an obvious, stupid ploy. Except the general public is just dumber and more self interested.

I've worked in graphic design and marketing on and off for like 15 years.

Do designs TYPICALLY change every 5 ish years. Yes.

Is it because of a good reason, I claim no.

While designs in companies do evolve and can be significantly different, you should still be able to tell the origin. What normally happens the creative/marketing director moves on to a new company and is replaced. The new blood has a self imposed outlook that they need to change all the things significantly to prove their vision exists. You saw this with Avis and their incredibly successful, "we are the 2nd place car rental agency, so we work harder to get your business." Except a new marketing team then got brought on due to exec politics/shuffling. Obviously the new firm cant do what the old one did because they have to prove themselves... and they dropped the ball and things went to shit.

Company restructuring, politics and egos have more to do with design changes than the unicorn world of design trends.

This neobrute idea is just a lazier version of the 90s aesthetic. Like, a basic bitch reimagining with no personality. I bet designers who like this trend are vegan and like watching The Office on repeat because, "OMG, like, the office is my favorite show ev-vaaaaaa." My 2 cents.

It all depends on the plant. Some plants, including grasses, take direct shit great. Others, not so much. It has less to do with the type of shit and more with the type of plant. Most shit is composted before use.

You're supposed to compost any shit before using it as fertilizer. Appling poop directly to a plant is never really a good idea unless you water it down a lot.

Hey, the market for dog shit is growing since there's a looming fertilizer shortage due to the Russian invasion. Growth market... add in a scheme for tax breaks through city clean up initiatives, you may just have an opportunity.

If I knew the play, I wouldnt be sharing it publicly.

My whole point is, Musk made a series of public actions that made a stir. One action had the board make a knee-jerk decision that seems somewhat logical. He's jabbing with his left and the Twitter board seems to have hopped to their left and he's maybe going to uppercut, right hook, maybe go for a knee or do nothing at all and get hammered on martinis or mojitos or whatever a rich super villian likes to drink.

This is all a public side show for some greater end down the road or Musk made a drunk filing with the SEC. I dont know... well, all I do know is what's publicly available is pure propaganda to sway the public towards some greater play by someone who's going to profit off of this. I'm done with my poop now, find someone smarter to figure it out.

To be fair to both sides of this argument. Yes, if follow the "popular" of any of these sites... Jesus fucking Christ, it's incredibly bland and derivative. Even more so than what it was like in the 90s and 2000s with "popular media" at the time. Algorithms favor repetition, not originality.

That being said! If you're a totalitarian dictator in how you curate your feeds, you'll get the good stuff. Like, my YouTube feed has zero "surprised fucking stupid face" thumbnail channels. If I check incognito mode YouTube, that's all I ever see and it's all derivative, low effort. I have tech essays, writing essays, woodblock printing, photography tutorials and lots of other good stuff on my heavily curated feeds. I also make it a habit to follow up on creators recommendations.

There's effort in finding cool stuff... and to be fair, I feel there always was a certain amount of effort to find "the cool". So... maybe you're putting too much faith in the almighty algorithm.

I'm going to have to agree with the original commentor. A majority of people who stub their toe and blame racism, patriarchy or whatever else, are incredibly boring people. Anyone that's super dogmatic is typically a one trick pony. Sure there are exceptions, but I'm not going to get yelled at for having "micro aggressions" when asking someone "so what do you do for fun" when I already know the answer since they're an insufferable, self-righteous ass.

You fail to recognize one important factor. Those that did cancel dont show up to these comment threads anymore.

Me being one of them for I think I'm about to hit the 2 year mark soon on being sans-Netflix.

Any show I like and publicly does well, cancelled on season 3. Shows that have been popping up are utter trash. I was thinking of doing a month when Cowboy Bebop dropped... yea... I'm glad i didnt. I'm waiting for Witcher season 3 to drop, then I'll get it for a month and cancel it.

Their business practices are staying from, "deliver awesome content in an awesome way" to "squeeze blood from a rock".

Back in the day, Marco Polo was their shit tier show and it was awesome. The netflix exclusives that were coming out 2 years ago were trash and I could see the writing on the wall that it wasn't going to get better. What I hear about lately, it's all a fucking joke. They're hitting the theres a quality in quantity mindset and the numbers are showing that it's not working.

Maybe if they placed more focus on good movies and shows instead of the business models LITERALLY EVERYONE RAN AWAY FROM TO GET NETFLIX IN THE FIRST PLACE... they might be complaining that there aren't enough good writers and filmmakers out there because they already bought up everyone. That's a better and much more respectable problem to have instead of being a silicon valley bro who worries about "scale" during every conversation.

"Put the warehouse in the middle of nowhere..."

Dude... you play way too many video games. The cost of building a warehouse, lead time and logistics is not like in Simcity. Best case, you'll have a large dockable warehouse in 12 months after purchase IF the bureaucracy is smooth. Which it wont be. Mobilizing a crew is its own nightmare when it's "middle of nowhere". Where do you house a hundred rotating contractors within a 20 min travel time if it's in the middle of nowhere that doesnt have the population infrastructure for that influx? Trucking in materials is it's own issue. Along with equipment. Oh and when the rest of the industry is doing the same thing... wait list or you get the bargain bin contractors... which... yea... not worth it. That and Conexes "rot". They're not long term solutions in a lot of environments. There's a lot of reasons why it ain't that easy as you think.

I hate the smell of white collar in the morning.

Every lifestyle has its pros and cons.

It's not the lifestyle's fault if you thought it would be fashionable. Understand this though, that same frustration and regret, folks who move from the suburbs or rural areas into the city feel the exact same thing. I'm speaking from experience. This is why theres such a visceral reaction from people when they hear, "everyone needs to live in the city because it's better". For you, sure. For lots of others, get the fuck off my property because you scared off the birds. They sound better than you. You're blocking my view of the trees too.

It's been that way for a few years, in my opinion. HN was the only social network I would somewhat participate in, but I realized it's more the same. I just think it's more intellectualized, thus slower on the uptake that the canary died since we're all engrossed by the smell of our own farts.

Anxiety and existential issues really plague tech in general. Pretty sure most of us grew up on the propaganda, "technology will save the world". While it's true like 30% of the time, the other 70% is a dumpster fire with ticket sales and someone trying to make NFT sales from the tickets as well.

My biggest internal screaming moment came when a year or two ago someone showed an API to save trees. The HN community was oddly positive about it. So stupid me asked some questions.

"How?"

"Because it would."

"But how???"

"Youre just a bigoted boomer that would never understand."

I hate this planet.

Someone else explained how it was better than someone else's idea about creating a resource for people to learn about local trees, identify at risk tree species and how to grow their own/take care of them. My screaming continued.

And you get this with a lot of specialized fields like civil engineering and agriculture. Know python? You're an expert in all things apparently. Someone with 20+ years experience in a practical field is an idiot to someone with 2 years of python dev work and a year of failed Apple app store projects. Sadly, I'm not even exaggerating. My mild dyslexia makes python impossible for me, so I guess I'll never learn life's secrets. Maybe I am the idiot afterall. All I know now at 34, Henry David Thoreau was right. I just wont focus on beans as much. I think I'm going to make my own line of sheep cheese instead and give it out to friends. Then try doing weekend gatherings to drink, eat and be merry with them. Farmers, even though broke and exhausted, tend to be far happier with life in general.
