I was about a week from launching a react native app on iOS/Android, so decided to go through all the administrative motions to get things going in case there were any delays in getting that moving.

Google Developer account cost me $25. A few days go by and I get an e-mail asking for identification documents and a bill that shows that I live at the place I'm at. I send my passport and utility bill with my name on it, those get rejected with absolutely 0 reason the next day.

Zero explanation. I raised about 8 different support tickets and DMed several people on twitter and linkedin that worked for google and emailed a few higher up people.

At one point I got some communication from a completely different department that wasn't accessible to the support lines publicly available, and it looked like they were going to help me.

But in the end nothing.

I'll concede in understanding that:

No one has actually looked at my documents

No one wants to give me a reason why you won't help me

No one on your entire support team is capable of performing basic customer support tasks.

Thanks for treating me like some untouchable beggar when you were the ones that stole $25 from me.

Apple/iOS cost me $100 and my developer account was verified within two days with zero hassle.

Every Macbook user I've seen seems to have an ultra smudged fingerprint screen as if they were using an iPad with so many layers of oil it shimmers as a rainbow, with sprinkles with various unique flakes of dandruff, and dirt encrusted on their trackpad and keyboard. It stirs up conniptions.

I have the EXACT same issue. I'm getting nowhere with support. I have a huge document showing how ridiculous this is. I was given no explanation as to why the identification failed nor any opportunity to upload new documents.

Didn't have to look long to find a comment mirroring how I feel about these devices. To me it feels like they're just adding power to an artificially castrated device I can barely do anything with. See no reason to upgrade from my original iPad Pro that's not really useful for anything. Just an overpowered device running phone software.

Five years? How about now.

I saw a video a few months back featuring a VScode plugin to hide tailwind styles.

If you have to use a plugin to manage your nuclear waste code by hiding most of it something is wrong.

I got extremely sick in 2017 for about a week. Went through about 6 boxes of tissues in that short time period and was barely able to feed myself. Only months after when someone was vaping near me did I realize I wasn't able to smell.

Only after a few years after long and intense cardio I would sometimes regain some sense of smell for about 20 minutes. Now in the last month seems to be coming back more permanently.

I'm someone who spends a lot of money on expensive perfumes like Creed and regularly burn incense in my house.

I honestly didn't feel like I was missing out on much with no sense of smell, definitely did not feel like I was missing 1/5th of the human experience. It really didn't bother me and I never went to a doctor for it. That said, I'm glad the sense is slowly coming back again.

Personally I switched to clojure 8 years ago after this article along with PG's essays pushed me over the edge.

I have emacs, terminal, and chrome bound on a hotkey so I don't need to fiddle with alt tabbing. Also have custom mappings for volume control (way easier than hitting the laptop's default fn-f2/3 combo) and three pre-determined screen brightness levels that set the brightness perfectly when my ambient lighting is dark/normal/bright.

Also I have mappings that basically clone all the keybindings from MacOS that I cannot live without, so alt-t is new tab, shift-alt-[ is prev tab, alt-q closes application etc.

https://sayartii.com/ is using Datomic stored on postgres that I have set up on Linode. That was all done back in 2020 and haven't needed to touch it. Site now gets ~180M monthly reqs and I store an enormous amount of analytic data on Datomic (was supposed to be temporary) so users can see impressions/clicks per day for each advertisement. I'm surprised it's still working.

Development experience is extremely nice using clojure. I've used it for two other projects and has been very reliable. My latest project didn't really need any of its features compared to a traditional rdbms but I opted for it anyways so I don't have to write sql.

"AI agents for billions of people" doesn't sound sinister at all if you're a robot.

My personal experience is that using reagent is so intuitive that I had launched a non trivial form to post ads on a production site within a week not knowing both clojure/script and anything about react.

I was writing a longer comment and deleted everything after it started to look like bragging.

All I'll say is that I'm extremely grateful to Clojure for the life I've been able to live and what it's allowed me to accomplish. This is truly a language for beating the averages.

AC was my first MMORPG, fond memories indeed. I remember the sheer adrenaline I got when "going red" and watching PK drama and battles unfold at the subway, dominated by a build called the "OG mage," slidecasting all over the place casting drain health until finishing with a missile spell. I would cast Blooddrinker 6 on monster weapons and giddily laugh as they sliced through new players starting out. I remember staying up the entire night during a school day when housing was released and being one of the first people on my server to claim one. I even remember being a vassal to a very generous asian guy in his mid twenties living in LA named Kyoto and my countless interactions with him and his brother under a specific tree.

Countless memories I could keep going on and on, but what an experience!

I use emacs daily with doom emacs. Spent a few minutes answering questions then had to drop out because the survey had several required questions regarding packages, discovery and use-of that provides no relevant answers for me to because I don't really stray afar from what doom emacs provides me.

I completely agree with you so I wrote one awhile back that doesn't break the scrollbar and also returns you to where you were on browser back.

It's not perfect but I don't really care to improve it and no one has had any complaints.

In addition to this I have a USB-C hub that includes 2 HDMI inputs, my M1 Max Mac Pro doesn't recognize two monitors connected to it but my Windows laptop does.

There are loads of wealthy people living in Dubai without issues. Every country has its tradeoffs, but whenever I leave UAE I'm suddenly conscious about my wallet and dread using public bathrooms. It is what you make of it and there's a lot more here than the fake glamorous life everyone likes to moan about.

Yup. I've been flying long enough to know that even though my radio and video link can easily take me several kilometers out, it can fail at any moment and I have to treat it as such.

RTF packages have always existed, but DJI making this widespread will allow every random person to buy one from their local store and have the ability to fly acro, which is pretty horrifying.

DJI digital video has been out for quite awhile now for hobbyists to include in their custom builds. Transmission range is not a valid point because a clean analog video signal and Crossfire outpaces DJI enormously.

The 20 min flight time is a lie, Joshua Bardwell measured 10 minutes hovering. That's extremely easy to surpass on typical light weight 5 inch freestyle drone with a 1300mah battery that cost a fifth of the price of the DJI ones.

It is an impressive drone, but for experienced FPV pilots it's very limiting.

Looks like forced obsolescence. My former daily driver a 2015 Macbook Pro has somehow become so slow it struggles with the most basic tasks, even after a fresh install. Nothing seems wrong with it other than it's slow to the point that browsing the web is a pain and development work has become impossible. Wasn't like that when I bought it.

Good question. I've already bailed out. After many satisfied years with Apple never thought I'd say this but having a much better time with Windows and wsl2. If that wasn't available would have went to linux. Used to look forward to Apple's keynotes and innovations. It's been all downhill since 2015 and I don't see it getting any better. Wish it would, but it's clear someone else is going to have to take charge of Apple before that happens.

Everyone's problems, context, and experience is different, but from where I stand it sounds like you may have had an a better experience using a data spec library like Metosin's malli.

One of the pain points I had before was different kinds of data flowing through my system. Clojure spec never made complete sense to me and was a bit difficult to write specs that matched my data. It was easier to write data that matched the specs.

Malli does this a lot more easily with human errors that have made my life enormously easier. It's been a game changer for me.

Most notable things I use are Re-frame frontend and Datomic for back.

I think Reagent would be the easiest and most visible example.

Reagent was my intro to React, I had no experience prior nor did I care to learn it at the time. The reagent wrapper around react made it so intuitive to use that I was writing productive (albeit warty code because I had 0 experience with functional programming/lisp/clojure) my first day. I had loads of experience writing Javascript, but at that time React looked cryptic to me without reading any documentation and Reagent did not.

Another commenter mentioned lodash. If I was forced to use JS directly, lodash would be the first thing I reach out for to solve problems.

But in Clojure you also get "cljc" which is a file extension that lets you use code both in Clojure and Clojurescript land simultaenously. With this you can write things like form validation code that's exactly the same front and backend.

Prior to Clojure I feel that I didn't really know how to do things well.

In the context of the domain I have the most experience with, web applications, I'd summarize the bulk of programming as defining data, data transformations and shoving data through APIs. Once you get the hang of it, Clojure makes it trivial to transform datastructures from A to B. This has enormously expanded the kinds of problems I can solve.

I feel somehow that this is the case for the majority of people but they don't realize it yet because their experience is the most popular trendy language or framework. I've seen many examples of libraries in different languages having enormous amounts of commits and hundreds issues for problems that are trivial to solve in Clojure.

I was in the same boat, constantly grabbing for frameworks and if one wasn't available that made my task simple, would struggle trying to bend the frameworks or language I was using to come up with a solution.

I'm not a language geek and I don't write code outside my work for fun. I want to spend the least amount of time possible in front of the computer and sleep knowing my web applications won't topple over. Clojure has fit me so well that I don't think I would have accomplished what I have in other languages.

I've also switched from Mac to a Ryzen desktop. So far the experience has been extremely good and performance is amazing. Been working with clojure and react native on WSL2 several months now.

I didn't want it to be this way though. Apple has been continuously pushing out laptops that are not what I want. My Mac is also notifying me nonstop about 2FA authentication and iCloud storage, and I can't seem to turn those off. I used to eagerly await their keynote events to see what cutting edge innovations they will announce. There have been none I care about since Steve passed.

The lack of a decent modern laptop (I just want a proper keyboard without touchbar, some ports, with a decent cooling system) and MacOS becoming more buggy and annoying has pushed me to find an alternative.

WSL1 did not cut it for me, but WSL2 has taken Apple out of my mind entirely with regards to my development environment.
