So I think the answer to your question is "both". :) To build an AI app, you need many of the same skills you need to build any other type of app. But it's not like AI is some spooky thing that only ML pros can touch. It's accessible to any dev.

Nothing about this forces any government projects to do anything. It's just recommended guidelines.

Yes, that sounds very much like the scenario we see ourselves in. For us, we have too many projects for copy/pasting the Gruntfile between them to be a viable option, and the Gruntfiles themselves would have been too complex.

I'm not convinced the shell scripts are a good alternative, though. (Maybe they are for your scenario.) I would like to write a follow-up post talking about this.

Yes, I acknowledge in the article that Grunt is not designed for this, and if you use Grunt for what it is designed for, it works pretty well. However, it wasn't obvious to me the using Grunt to build an SDK was outside of its scope when I started the project, so I figured it may not be obvious to other people as well.

Although Stalin's USSR didn't technically believe in a deity, it still has many religious elements:

* Violently throwing out competing religions, like Christianity

* Belief in a single god-king (Stalin)

* Total faith in the power of communism as the most perfect solution to the world's problems

* Harsh punishments handed out to those who question the orthodoxy (gulags)

* Obsessed with submission of the individual before an institution

Blind, violent faith in bad ideas could reasonably be blamed for a vast amount of the world's problems.

My main problem is that it has awful support for functional programming, which I find to be a really helpful way of doing something like a web crawler, where you're essentially describing a computation to parse some input. I would use F#, because it offers powerful functional programming tools, is on .NET / VS 2012 (not sure if that's a pro or con for you), and has type inference (so you get the benefits of static typing without the cost of writing out the types of everything).

You should probably check existing web crawler solutions to see if you can adapt them before rolling your own.

I'm excited to see if they can pull this off. For me, the main dealbreaker has been clunkyness of sharing and concurrent editing. I've played with the new iPad and WP7 apps, and they are quite nice.

Disagreeing with a position held by 40% of people != irrational hate speech towards 10% of people.

Obviously, a view isn't made more correct by having more people believe in it, but if one makes entirely baseless attacks on a large demographic, and that demographic responds, I find it hard to be sympathetic.

I agree that such tactics are not helpful for a rational, adult conversation. However, if someone is spreading hate-speech about gays on religious grounds, he is far beyond the reach of logic and rationality.

Being written in PHP is not important. I edited the title to remove that. I saw the page's title was:

"<title>Coordino - Home - A FREE PHP StackOverflow Clone</title>"

and just automatically included "PHP" in the HN submission without thinking terribly much about it.

A QA forum is not off limits. You are correct that they are not trying to hide that it's a SE clone. Maybe it's legal, but it feels kinda gross to me to make a shoddy knockoff of someone else's innovation.

I say it's "crappy" because it feels less responsive and lacks polish compared to the real thing. The formatting is oddly jumbled. For example, on InterviewStreet's installation (http://discuss.interviewstreet.com/), questions have some upvote count on the main page, but when you view that question directly, the upvote count is 0.

HN and reddit are similar, but they also take different approaches. Coordino advertises itself as a "StackExchange clone" in the page <title />. It seems to be copying as many aspects of StackExchange as possible, down to the look and feel.

I called it "crappy" because it is much less polished than StackExchange. Perhaps the pejorative is unfair.

The Seattle area is definitely great, but I may want to try something new.

Re: the social issue - all the young dudes on the team were really in to Star Craft, which is great, but not something I can really have a conversation about. They offered me a job because I was still a perfectly cordial / competent person. I just didn't bond with my teammates beyond a very superficial, professional level.

What are the benefits of this event that are worth that much money? Is the idea that you go if your company pays for it, not as an individual who's just interested in entrepreneurship and startups?

I agree - the author seems to think that problems with a particular design are intrinsic to any electronic solution.
