Passion is the biggest red flag from a company to me. It often means we want to work you to exhaustion.

I don't like how they buried what I consider the lede.

I think this matters to encouraging both women and men. Yes, jerks exist. Sometimes its good people having bad days, some people are monsters hiding under a veneer (ex Hollywood's Weinstein).

We need to stop dehumanizing each other, and understand all humans have the full expanse of positive and negative emotions.

Most people in technology are not bros, sjws, ceos, and whatever.

They are just people trying to get by.

In our highly globalized world. A civil war in China, India, Europe, Russia, or America is almost guaranteed to spill out due vast amount of global resources already being fought over in light skirmishes, proxy wars, and shows of power at various borders.

In China's specific case, India and China are fighting over borders. China and the US (allies) are running into issues over resources in the South China Sea. Also Russia and the US both are increasingly their navy presence in the Pacific. It's a powder keg waiting to go off for sure.

This is quite true, and Facebook knows it. I thought it was the reason they bought Instagram.

I think President Trump proved people are lying to pollsters more than ever. Also Americans lie about guns quite a bit. I've even meet some who don't consider handguns as real guns or call them baby guns.

I'm really hopeful for this and things like beyond meat, anything that will reduce of the misery and suffering of the animals we eat.

My big fear is in our rush to optimize labor/workers for computer science we will make them obsolete soon like most of the other workers in the face of automation and ai.

I feel good about what technology can do, but not for the next generation of computer science or tech workers.

I'm doubtful of that statistic. Many americans hate the government knowing what guns they have.

I'm not advocating for random people with guns, but law enforcement officers.

There are others where there have been plenty of armed security around, even police, and it's done nothing to stop things.

Just because a small number of bad cops haven't done their job, doesn't I mean I think we get should get rid of all cops.

I gave a realistic solution for the united states, One that I have personally seen work.

You will not be able to do a gun grab without a civil war or extreme violence in the united states.

It should be a 100%. They also need to get armed security.

My alma mater had its own police force, and it was really helped. It reduced not just shootings, but violent crime in general.

EDIT: Also the FBI needs to be investigated. Apparently they were warned several times about that Florida shooter. It's just utterly unbelievable, Wray should be fired, and a special counsel set up to investigate this unbelievable failure. Ex. The Fbi said it couldn't verify the shooter, who used his own name on youtube with death threats. Unbelievable!

I think you are missing the class aspect to all of this. There is a huge amount of documented research of the impact of social class on jobs.

Most of society (men and women) doesn't exist at Harvard, and the top 500 companies.

There could easily be "anti middle/low class bias against males" from the upper classes. Which is a common theme in history, lower class men are slightly more disposable (war) then lower class woman.

I could easily see lower class men escaping into video games.

When I volunteered at a suicide prevention center, I dealt with a ton of college grads who couldn't find jobs, and were depressed, suicidal and deep in debt. They said they felt alone, and their parents just thought they were lazy.

Maybe videogames are their only way to eke out some self-proclaimed happiness being a hero in some fake reality. But that happiness will quickly fade as they age, and they are forced to face reality in terms of resources needed for survival.

I think this also explains the rise of the extremist youth groups antifa and the alt-right. Both are dominated by young men looking for purpose and value.

Its seems like they are dropping out of society for some reason. We probably need to go back and look at why people decide to work in the first place. What the incentives were and how they changed. Most people aren't working because work is fun, they work because they want the money for some goals like food, housing, families.

Society has become a dystopia with a hall of mirrors and flashing lights for many kids. They feel more alone then ever, even with all the social media. I have a strong suspicion though social media is making it worse, since you are constantly bombarded with beautiful and successful people (or people faking it).

Its times like this I wish I lived in Europe.

My personal theory probably not. Its looks like small but significant percentage of men are extraordinarily sensitive to economic advantages of different activities.

I think the bitcoin billionaires and millionaires are mostly men, and good evidence of something changing.

When did you get your degree ? I recently looked at some college prices out of curiosity my alma matter is now 50,000 per year with 16,000 in other expenses.

I would never have gone there if I had to pay those prices.

College is a poor return on investment right now. I think more women should avoid it too.

The cost of tuition is simply far too high for the real value, of course this differs by majors and degrees. Overall its just not worth the debt load. I think the overall drive to send people to college simply turned it into a a high school diploma 2.0 except now we have soo many kids deep in soul crushing debt.

At the same time jobs are decreasing in value or total to exported labor or automation, we are really having multiple overlapping crises each making the overall domestic situation worse.

It's really concerning. I'm fully expecting a social revolution from the post millennials, whether it leads to good times or hard times, who knows.

But I do know I won't be sending my kids to a university in its current form, I'm hoping Khan Academy becomes the model for replacement.

EDIT: my kids won't be going to college for another 16 years. I highly doubt colleges won't undergo some kind of significant change.

Wait until you get old (past 35), I'm a woman (ex web deck "ninja/rockstar/etc") and I can safely say the ageist comments are far worse.

During the first dot com bubble, software companies were sort of filled with non-programmers.

Source: I lived through it and started with almost no experience and was hired and trained on the job. They hired a ton of people to be trained, and many didn't succeed and were transferred to non dev jobs.

As a fairly old woman(mid thirties) for tech anyways and with a family now, I really feel your pain.

I get the ageist comments too, and contract work has really been dwindling. Web Dev really seems a young person game. If my husband didn't have a stable job, I'd be in a lot of trouble.

My takeaway was that people don't like leaders that can't relate to them.

Obama related well to one part of the country, and Trump related well to another part of the country.

Trump's case being more surprising since he's tries very hard to come off as a class traitor. ex. Notice his love of the peoples food (fast food)

I hate tipping culture. When I was young and a waitress in college, I noticed horrible racism from waiters who treated minorities badly due to tipping stereotypes.

Please just get rid of it for living wages.
