I remember in 2006 when online sports gambling was banned, and witnessed first hand some sleaze bags flee to Costa Rica where many of the actual operations were located. What I witnessed regarding addiction and exploitation put me off sports for a long time. Now here we are, with the tech industry and political capital behind it, this time engineered to engulf the entire population. It's repulsive.

I do not see AI taking jobs, I see it more as everyone got a great secretary/junior to offload 'busy' work onto.

I’m afraid that your perspective is flawed. There are many jobs whose output can’t be enhanced by offloading certain tasks to improve productivity - the output itself is replaced by AI.

For instance, a family member who is a successful freelance illustrator and whose field has dramatically shrank with the introduction of image generation. They don’t need a secretary, they need clients. The same clients that now are happy to replace 50%-80% of their demand with AI-generated imagery.

Timely, just this morning I took an interest in Obsidian and the immediate query about it being open source returned a disappointing “no”. So count me in to try this one.

I will take a wild risk here and say that… it’s probably by design.

I grew up in the 80s/90s further south, and still the film was very much a high fidelity memory playing on-screen. The production design will never be fully appreciated by people that didn’t live that time, it was truly special.

This is really unfortunate. Google Fiber has maintained a low, no-nonsense price for years with near-perfect uptime, and besides the odd upselling email, they have never really pushed upgrades. More importantly, I can use my own hardware without having to engage in a war with technical support on 2 hour long calls.

Maybe I was in denial that Google would behave differently about this product considering their track record.

I have to be honest - build a blog and post your thoughts. Human thoughts, your ideas, the projects, the tips, and the art. Just add more human voices to the internet. We need them.

Engineering is never the bottleneck… until it is. I have at this very moment months of completed design features that engineering should have already implemented if they were not in a constant churn of refactoring, reorganizing and spiking to fix self-inflicted defects.

However, I believe Stardew Valley’s appeal wasn’t simply of fulfilling a void in the market. It is great because there is genuine passion for the subject in the execution, and the content in the game is truly compelling for a wide audience. An amazing story.

This seems like a breach of publishing terms / loss of confidence on Colossal Order. They released CSII in late 2013 clearly unfinished and unoptimized, delayed paid DLC expansion and content for nearly 2 years and there seems to be no end in sight for the performance problems. But the key part is that the announced console ports never materialized, leaving a large addressable market on the table. That Colossal Order may have captured lighting in a bottle with the first title when there was a gap in the market after the demise of SimCity, but looks like the second time around they were overambitious and may have put the franchise in a position to be sunsetted.

The only solution for that - all caveats and compromises considered - was paving over Windows with Linux. I tried to be patient. Yet Microsoft is hellbent on justifying their AI investments to shareholders by sacrificing their user base at the altar of the invasive LLM. I’m out.

I wonder if Apple’s doomed car project distracted them from creating a viable CarPlay strategy with OEMs. CarPlay Ultra looked like the salvageable part of that failure and it was too late then.

This would be the next step for flight simulators, which while remarkable still require handmade assets for accurate details.

I am disappointed by this development, as the precedent for this business model is out there for anyone to see. But I have little to add about that

What I do hope to see is more talent and investment contributed to OSS tools. It would really benefit everyone if GIMP, Inkscape, Krita and others received the Blender treatment.

I was seriously irritated with Windows 11 for the past few months. If my PC went to sleep, it would wake up and freeze at the logon screen. The constant updates that would reset some preferences - and worse, reinstall CoPilot and OneDrive - pushed me over. I went and installed Bazzite on the PC I built early this year with a Nvidia RTX 5080, somewhat skeptical that it would work well despite my extremely positive experience with the Steam Deck. The result is outstanding.

One (possible) omission here - the sand trout traps water underground by linking and forming dams around water pockets - that’s the cause of Arrakis’ ultra arid environment, but maybe it’s also the source of nutrition?

Interesting to see it crop up here. I met Ms. Covert when she released the book and have a signed copy around here somewhere. It remains relevant as ever, and has value well beyond UX practices. It’s a short read too, I recommend it.

I suspect this is happening due to the nano-banana image model becoming available to the general public. As a designer/artist, the generative image models’ impact on my field has been disastrous and depressing. For the average person, it’s the greatest thing they’ve ever seen.

I work in a large company that mandated 4-day RTO last year. Even taking a completely objetive point of view on the situation leads to the conclusion that something else is needed. We spend our days at our desks, on Zoom calls. People won’t get up to join in person - mostly because the conference rooms are all blocked by “special projects”, but mostly due to the offshoring of positions and distributed workforce post-pandemic. We are all spending valuable time on commutes to do what was possible from home.

Now I suspect the C-suite has noticed the discrepancy between attendance and occupancy, and I fully expect that their solution in this job market to be a 5-days, monitored attendance RTO soon. We are regressing at an alarming rate.

As a rule, never connect a TV to the internet - use an Apple TV instead. Apple are no saints, but they’re not blatantly doing these things and the user experience is vastly superior.
